Official Flickr App Brings Smooth Uploads, Browsing To iPhone

iPhone/iPod touch: There have been third-party apps like Flickit to upload iPhone photos directly to Flickr, but Flickr’s own app has hit the App Store, combining tools for uploading, tagging, search and set organising in a crisp-looking package.

The main page, shown at top, is where you get the most functionality, with an ever-present upload button in the upper right, beautifully cascading random images in the main frame, and quick access to your photo stream and those of your friends. Tapping a photo shows a pretty big view of the pic, and clicking for an even larger view gives you a full-screen, scroll-around vista.

Image uploading is also an easy and slick affair, with clearly understood privacy controls and big areas to tap to add tags, descriptions, and set inclusion. More interestingly, it’s probably not a coincidence that this app is landing in the App Store one day before Apple likely introduces iPod touch models with 3.2MP cameras..

Flickr is a free download for iPhone and iPod touch models running at least the 3.0 firmware. Uploads and profile features require a free Flickr account.

Authorizing the app with my Flickr account was a bit annoying, but other than that the app is pretty cool and well polished. This might get me to start uploading more pictures from my phone since I don't really use my Flickr account to host my photography anymore.

@D0rk: i think authorization might be pretty simple... when it works.
from the flickr app, it launched safari for me to sign in and authorize, but then it was unable to relaunch the flickr app. the app acts as if it is still unauthorized.

@jayteemo: Mine was a similar experience. The app launched Safari, I logged in, and then found myself staring at the generic Flickr mobile home page. No authorization page. Couldn't access it through various links from the mobile site either. So I relaunched the app, had it relaunch Safari and logged in again. Then it let me authorize and flawlessly reopened the app with it ready to go.

@D0rk: my problem was that i had the flickr app in a "folder" using Categories... that is why it couldn't re-launch the flickr app. i guess it can't handle the "flickr://" protocol if the app is corralled by Categories.
once i removed it from the "folder" it worked just fine.

Activation went smoothly for me. Although I had been using the mobile version and my iPhone probably already had my user information in memory. Very nice app. Although their mobile version was top notch too, the ability to upload is much easier in the dedicated app.

Looks cool, but after navigating deep into my photos I didn't see a quick way to get all the way out.

Interesting! I'll check it out now. Currently I use Mobile Fotos which is a fully functional paid app, but well worth the money IMO. I can do everything that the site lets me do pretty much.

EDIT: After a quick look through, Mobile Fotos does offer much more functionality. Searching within sets, searching for nearby photos, and a lot more. Also, this app could not load all my sets (I have over 100) and instead only loaded about 20.

Hmm. This worked great about two hours ago when I first downloaded it. Signed in, saw all my photos, played with it a bit. I just started it up again, and it recognizes me (Hello, username!) but claims my photostream is empty. After panicking for a second I checked online, and my photos are still there, but no matter what I do, the app refuses to load them again.

Doesn't seem to allow uploading to a Group Pool, but the Darkslide App definitely does. Otherwise very nice UI.

Why oh why do companies restrict apps like this?

@Ted Avery: i will also stick with mobile fotos, the flickr app is slick but browsing pics full screen takes an extra step and u cant hide the onscreen nav and just slide to the next pic like u can in MF, looks like an oversight.
