iPhone And iPod Touch OS 3.1 Available For Download
iPhone/iPod touch only: Apple today announced an update to iPhone OS 3.1 today, introducing a new “Genius” recommendation feature for the App Store. bug fixes and performance boosters, and several other small but worthwhile updates.
It’s also added a Ringtone section to the App Store on your device (for a whopping $2.29 a pop—which is why we recommend making them yourself [Windows guide; Mac guide]). Other than that, Apple’s not promising a lot from this update other than support for the newly released iTunes 9, its new features (e.g. Genius Mixes), and a few other nice tweaks. Below is a quick look at some of the other most notable updates from the release notes:
- Save video from Mail and MMS into Camera Roll
- Option to “Save as new clip” when trimming a video on iPhone 3GS
- Better iPhone 3G Wi-Fi performance when Bluetooth is turned on
- Paste phone numbers into the Keypad
- Anti-phishing features in Safari
- Improved Exchange calendar syncing and invitation handling
Hit up iTunes, plug in your device, and click the Check for Updates button to get started on the 240+MB download. As ever, iPod Touch owners get rorted to the tune of $5.99 for the update.

Luckily these features aren't so amazing that I would risk unjailbreaking my ipod touch. So waiting on the Dev Team.

Every time I plug in my iphone or unplug it, 90% of the time it freezes up Vista.
Which is a iphone problem, not a Microsoft problem, so don't start blaming Microsoft for that, which I know half of you people will.
Will this update fix that?
You forgot the feature about unjailbreaking phones. I know that's my favorite feature.
ok Dev team... go to work!! time to start backin up all your Cydia/Icy apps OS tweaks, and your Winterboard Themes etc all you jailbreakers!
@minivolt: Agreed. My wife has an iPhone and runs Vista and it has freezes her computer exactly 0% of the times she plugs it in.
Sounds like something else is going on.
I don't know if this is a bug or a redesign, but you know how when you preview a song in iTunes, it has the little circle that fills up around the play/stop button as the preview plays? Didn't that also appear in the iPhone iTunes store? Well, I just did the update to 3.1 on my 3G, and now it doesn't happen.

No, it's not my computer, it started happening after I upgraded my 1g iphone to 3.0.
It's also happens to lots of other people too, just go on the apple discussions, or on any mac forum, or apple forum, it's not just me.

Adam, that's kind of a big deal! The rest of it is pretty meh. I'd like to organize my apps in iTunes, but I can do that now with Veency or on a Mac, so I can wait until next week when it's jailbroken.
@NewSc2: I don't think it will... although it will most certainly kill your jailbreak (if you need to be jailbroken, wait until the iphone dev team delivers)
the non-jailbreak tethering could be smashed if the update also updates your carrier bundle (which is unlikely). If it does, however, re-enabling it should be as easy as syncing the custom carrier bundle again
(if iTunes once again locks the ipcc files, enabling them should be, once again, piece of cake using the same instructions that worked for 8.2 available on iClarified)

Weren't we promised bluetooth voice dial with 3.1?
I signed up as an app developer today and looking around saw no mention of it. If those are the notable updates, I'll stay with 3.0.1 for some time to come...
Yeah the main reason why I am looking forward to upgrade to 3.1 is to enjoy all the features of iTunes 9. But I will have to wait for the iPhone dev-team to give a go ahead:)

I paid for the Touch 3.0 upgrade. So why can't I copy and paste from the lyrics of the songs. Many podcasts put URLs in this section and I would like to be able to, you know, click on them.

@Colonel Jack O'Neill: My First generation iPhone (the 2G) is on 3.0 and never does that. I'm also on Vista.
