Whereis Adds Landmarks To Turn-By-Turn Directions

whereislocationsIf you’re giving directions, chances are you’ll end up saying something like “turn right at the shopping centre” at some point. Whereis has now added that feature to its online direction-finding service.

That might seem like a really obvious thing to do, but it’s an option conspicuously lacking in most mapping systems (including the gorilla of the space, Google Maps). Currently, there are about 170,000 landmarks in the Whereis system, a number that’s likely to expand over time. Whereis also plans to refine the landmark selection algorithm to ensure the most useful landmarks are highlighted.

For now, the feature is only available on the Whereis site; according to a spokesperson, the feature might show up on GPS devices that use Whereis maps in the future, but there’s no set timetable for that.
