The Stylish Ubuntu Desktop

I'm sorry, but that is completely incorrect. While Ubuntu ships with Gnome by default, its repositories include the KDE and XFCE DEs pre-packaged, as well as a multitude of WMs, such as IceWM, OpenBox, Fluxbox, Awesome, DWM, see where I'm going here? I would stop sprouting off information without researching it, as you could be dangerously mis-informing a mass amount of people.

@The How-To Geek: Well, since you can install any of the window managers and desktop environments after an install, you could technically have an Ubuntu install that runs KDE, XFCE, Fluxbox, Enlightenment, etc. or some subset of any of the desktop environments, while still technically an Ubuntu install. (just nit-picking on the use of the word 'always')

Not a bad linux shot. My only gripe would be the gigantic-ness/slightly awkward placement of the Conky script. But boy, does that font look amazing. It seems really familiar, but remind me, what one is it?

@SaritaDust Mite: It's gnome, with one panel at the top, with the global-menu applet, and AWN dock at the bottom.

Love the Conky. Looks great on this desktop - kudos!

That's pretty nice. Never liked docks, but that's more personal preference than any specific complaints.

What kind of desktop enviroment is it? Gnome? KDE? XFCE? Kinda looks like Gnome, but I'm not sure because it is all in German.

that's pretty fancy. but I like mine without desktop icons and just the panel on top, and no Conky, gnome do, or any dock.

The main point limiting any customization in Linux is that u only have got conky - a text based configurator ... Sure its the best one out ... but you cannot render an image in it directly...

For any other customization tools you always need something like superkaramba - means kde, or screenlets and the likes with loads of dependancies ...

So, the basic lesson linux teaches is :

There is no use having something graphically pleasing in something which you are going to cover up anyway by something else ;)

I... don't like it. Sure, it's a nice font, but have you seen the window borders? How do invisible minimize/maximize/close buttons increase usability?

If you guys are using ubuntu (or something debian based) I would take a look at http://francois.vogelweith.com/?page_id=16&lang=en
They have a theme repository so you can just install themes via apt-get. The themes are very nice, and they go together so you don't have to mix and match. Each theme comes with it's own log in screen, background, gtk theme, icons packs, etc.

Even from the thumbnail I can tell that the EPI shortcut is too far away from the TRM shortcut. Yuck! Nice otherwise though.

the clock font is "Kontrapunkt", it gained the danish design award in 2004, and is given away for free by its creators

no window buttons: i use easystroke, a program allowing the desktop-control via mouse gestures, so i have some gestures for max/min/close, what means more usability for me

text icons in dock: i think it is the only way for a consistent look without spending too much time with making icons
