The Computer Hardware Chart Identifies Your PC’s Parts

Whether you’re a first-time computer builder or a seasoned pro, deviantART user Sonic480’s computer hardware poster, which helps you identify countless different types of hard drives, RAM, ports, CPU sockets, power connectors and more, is a great reference.

Chances are you don’t know the ins and outs of every single connector or piece of computer hardware you’ll come across (even if you do have experience), and while we’re sure the poster could cover even more territory (if we’re being picky), it’s a pretty great visual reference.

    SCSI connectors are still difficult. Seems there's more than 15 types of them. http://www.datapro.net/images/scsiconn.gif

    @brianary: yeah most of us would opt for the 1TB HDD instead.

    And I've bookmarked, it. this will be great for over the phone(or net) PC help for family members, telling them what connector goes where. Because "the white oblong one with lots of pins in it" doesn't cut the mustard

    wow.... this seems like a great reference!

    I like pictures...
    And wow, this is really cool. They should make this into a board game of some kind. Maybe like a geek version of memory

    @ibenx: They have a higher res .png for printing.

  • ugadawg

    @batk: The interface for version 1.0 and 2.0 are pretty much the same. Version 3.0 has yet to be released into the wild. I'm not sure if the official draft has been approved by the IEEE.

    @Joelp: The A+ test wasn't that comprehensive when I passed it. :)

    Nice comptia a+ study material.

    That'd be practical and cool in my computer room! I go ahead and--holy carp $50 to $70 for a poster? Uh, maybe next time.

    This is a great reference, but some of the plugs left out bugs me. Why are there 3 firewires on here and only 1 USB? There are 2 out now and 1 more coming out very soon.

    If you're up for giving it all out to look good to everyone else - You might be a graphics card.
    If you have your own driver - You might be a graphics card.
    If your idea of a good time is to be picked up at your prime and then thrown away two years later - You might be a graphics card.

    If you tend to go up in flames occasionally - Well, then you might be a Sony battery instead.

  • DBeta

    Pretty cool. It would be nice to have a poster(everything being 1:1 scale). I often run into hardware that I'm not sure of "Is this a DDR or DDR2 stick of RAM" "Is that a 939 or 754 socket CPU." These things look too much alike.

  • ibenx

    I love this poster, but the price for this is outrageous. Though they have seemed to lower the price since yesterday.

    @Karakawe: I don't know about most, but I think I'd prefer the pictures in this case. However, I do know that I prefer the well-done illustrations in one of my cookbooks, though.

    I could have sworn I caught this yesterday on here. I know I downloaded it yesterday evening.

    Here is the big 24mb file: http://www.deviantart.com/download/111402099/Computer_hardware_poster_1_7_by_Sonic840.jpg

    Saw this on hackaday earlier. A great reference, although I can't decide whether actual photographs serve the purpose as well as detailed illustrations might.

    @fleebailey33:
    Sounds like something ThinkGeek would sell. Someone better tip them off to this opportunity.

    Wow, this is probably the most useful, while still being the most simple tool I've seen to building, or identifying a computer.

    The 'Optical Audio Toslink' and 'Firewire 4 pin iLink', I'd always wondered what they were.

    I'm surprised someone hasn't mentioned it already, but... Desktop background, anyone? =P

    Amazing. Now I have something our sysadmins want :-)

  • nolabar10der

    Sweet. I'm about to build a modest rig for my mom. No matter how moderately experienced I think I am, I always get stumped multiple times and go running to GIS. This is definitely bookmarked. Thanks to the original author and LH for linking it!
