InstaClick Opens New Tabs With Right-Click (For Laptops)

incidentally, does anybody (LH staff included) know a way (firefox extension perhaps?) to use a three-fingered click as a middle click on a mac? it just makes sense that if a two fingered click is "right click", that three fingers should give a middle click.

many people here are suggesting that ctrl+click/command+click is a fine replacement for middle clicking. yes, it works, but it requires use of two hands for most, and awkward hand movements for others. middle click is a one button solution

Pointless... as someone said before me, just CTRL and left click does the job, or CTRL+Shift and left click gives that new tab focus.

@Z1NX: I do this a lot. I try to keep one browser for each task, or thought process if you will, with all tabs associated with that task in that browser.
Say you're doing 3 or 4 different searches, each resulting in 3-5 tabs opening. I don't want 20 tabs in one window, makes it kind of hard to keep things organized.
Opening in a new window is worth the resources imo.

most laptops, including my dell just lets you press down both sides to count as a middle click.

@LesPaulLvr5: works on eeepcs, although I do prefer the two finger tap on the multitouch trackpad.

@flowerygirl51: There is an extension called "Menu Editor" that let's you remove all the redundant crap that you don't need.

What's the point of having a "close tab" option in the tab context menu when you can close any tab with just a single click of the middle mouse button?

Menu editor lets you remove all that stuff, leaving you with much shorter and easily navigated menus.

I was just trying to do this last night. The work computer is a Dell D810 and I have a wireless keyboard at the office so I don't use the regular keyboard enough to have learned some of these things. I'll have to remember Ctrl+right click.

or you can use Autohotkey to change any button to a dedicated middle click i configured the menu pull-down button(between the right alt and ctrl) to be a middle click

I use fire gestures for this. I right click and drag down to open a link in a new tab. I love using mouse gestures.

Awesome! I was just wishing for a script that took away the "Open link in new window" option because I always just want it in another tab. This saves me some frustration. :)

I don't know if its an extension that I have or that it pure firefox but if I press the right mouse button and then scroll down I get a tiny history list for this tab (and then can scroll up and down in this list). If I press the right mouse button and then scroll UP I get a tiny list of my open tabs and then I can scroll up and down in this list.Its a GREAT feature.

I've used that simultaneous left and right clic on Sony and Toshiba Notebooks, it doesn't work in HPs, at least Pavilions.

I can't wait until Tab Mix Plus is updated to work with 3.5 and makes all these one-trick ponies and workarounds obsolete. Just saying.

For the record, Lenovo Thinkpads (at least the T30 series) have a middle button.

@LesPaulLvr5: first thing i thought of besides ctrl right click. all of my lappies have that feature, even the crappy sony.

but i browse with two hands, left hand across the side with thumb on left button, and right hand does all the work. makes it really easy to ctrl-click, plus it adds reaction for online chess and scrabble

It DOES work on Dell's.. Actually I found what LesPaulLvr5 said in a blog where the autor said he had discovered the trick working on his Dell. I have a Dell and the trick really works

I installed this recently and I love it. I know the normal keyboard shortcuts to open in new tabs, and my laptop does have a double press middle mouse button, but this extension makes it soo much easier.

90% of my link clicks are to open in current or new tab. The other 10% is needing the menu. So I feel using shift-right click 10% of the time is a lot better then using ctrl-right click 90% of the time.

on a mac, just hold down the command (apple) key and click to open in a new tab, no extension required.

Can't you just configure a middle button using the Synaptic Touch Pad utility? I remember on my old laptop you could configure zones and assign different button or key combinations to them. I used the upper left hand corner as the middle button and it worked like a charm.

seriously? just click both mouse buttons at once over a link and it'll open in a new window (it acts as a middle click)

click left and right simultaneously as a "chord" to get the middle-click...at least on HPs that works

I just use Ctrl+RightClick and voilá, new tab from a link...

RightLinks does the same thing and I think it's better than InstaClick.

The only thing is, I often right-click and select "open in new window." I usually want it in a new tab, but sometimes it needs to be completely separate.

What's wrong with CTRL+ Left click to open in a new tab? :)
