Google Earth Adds The Moon To Celebrate The Lunar Landing

Windows/Mac/Linux: Google’s celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Apollo moon landing today with the addition of the Moon to their popular 3D map tool, Google Earth.

Stargazers have been enjoying the sky in Google Earth for a couple of years now, but the addition of the Moon is a great way to appreciate the accomplishments of the crew of the Apollo missions. The new features let you browse the Moon’s surface with historical charts from mission plans, view artifacts left behind by humans, and check out landing sites from the various Apollo missions. You can even take a guided tour of the Apollo 11 landing narrated by author Andrew Chaikin with some excellent additional audio from Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin (you know, the #2 moonwalker to Armstrong).

Eager to explore the moon but can’t install Google Earth at work? Check out previously mentioned Google Moon—sort of like Google Maps for the moon—from the comfort of your browser.

If you go to Google Maps Streetview today, the little 'man' is an astronaut.

  • Igor Dubinskiy

@penguiniator: Calling the Moon another "world" is taking that term pretty loosely...

But yeah, it is a bit strange. I don't remember, did they have anything in the last few days (like on the aniversarry of the launch)?

@penguiniator: Oh my god I knew it! So wait, am I talking to a automatically generated reply... So if I told everyone to just f**k off on the internet, I'm actually just telling my computer too.... I could even just type my biggest secret here as well. People think I'm a man, but really, I'm a woman. But you're all just a computer, muwhahaha.

@tylerf: Me too. BTW, the Internet is a hoax. It is really a program on your computer that generates fake content and feeds it to you as if from an external source.

Google usually has custom graphics on their front page to showcase special events. I guess man's first steps on another world don't qualify.

I can’t believe the number of morons who question the Apollo landings, online and here where I live. I don’t know what sort of psychosis is at work here. Some kind of stupid peasant denial, yet a willingness to believe in tabloid trash. We have all this tech around, all the evidence of science and recorded history, yet we’re always on the verge of lapsing back into medieval stupidity. And these people don’t help. Where in the **** do they think all our everyday tech comes from—tech fairies??? I really hate these people, or there attitudes... I can’t distinguish the two sometimes.

Who coined this: "stupid stupid people" I’d swear, these are the ones who don’t bathe, even in 2009, even in a Western country where running water and soap are everywhere and cheap.
