I'm seeing crazy CPU and memory usage since the update. On the verge of going back to an older version.

@ErMac21: Huh, and Lifehacker did a post about it....Yesterday: http://lifehacker.com/5316086/firefox-351-security-update-coming-later-this-week... , which you admit to have seeing in your next comment. Hows about YOU get it together?

@send9: I was as die-hard as they came for OS/2; I didn't switch to running Windows full time until 1997 or early 1998 and even then it was under protest. The only thing that keeps me from going back is lack of drivers for newer hardware.

But if you're willing to live with P2-grade hardware, OS/2 does run lightning fast on it.

@Denver80203: If I remember correctly, the patches Microsoft released last Tuesday fixed vulnerabilities that have been known for weeks or even months. And I think there's still one IE vulnerability out there that the patches don't cover.

While FF isn't perfect, fundamentally any other browser is safer than IE because they don't have the hooks into the OS like IE does. I have FF and Chrome installed at home; after this vulnerability appeared, I just ran Chrome for a week.

@kettlewhistle: Mozilla recommended temporarily turning off TraceMonkey while they worked on fixing the security bug.

I also turned off compatibility checking when I got the message about Google Gears - seemed to be working fine until maybe the third or fourth time I started my browser - now no joy for Google Gears.

    @Brian Perconti:

    Google Gears! Nooooooooo!

My security "guru" warned the Firefox users in the IT dept about this yesterday.. she's a non-believer. I think I'll start warning her about the IE security issues and see how long it takes to fix them.

Even with the latest update one big issue remains:

Why doesn't the 'show my windows and tabs' function work properly anymore? If you google around you'll see several people have been having this problem.

What happens even if you have this option selected, Firefox will NOT load your saved tabs from the last session, and instead it will load your home page. The workaround is to make you don't have the browsing history set to be cleared when you quit Firefox. If this is one of those 'it's a feature not a bug' things then that makes the clear cache when quitting function kinda useless IMO.

I myself have experienced it over 3 different systems (1 Mac, and 2 PC's). Also has anyone noticed that since version 3, Firefox will not remember your tabs if you just quit it (by hitting the x)?

You have to select 'File/Exit' for it to work properly.

    Strange...

BTW, I know I rambled a bit, but hopefully I made myself clear.

And it looks like there's a new icon for OS/2! Finally! (Seriously, who uses OS/2 still? Other than ATMs, I'm guessing die-hard fans who dual-boot with BeOS.)

  • ErMac21

No. i have the final version. that all you have. i saw the article yesterday on lifehacker and i just checked for the update and there it was available for download. and now when i check it says that their are no new updates.

  • kettlewhistle

@OptionalJoystick: Isn't it enabled by default in 3.5? Mine was and is.

  • onetrueu

@ski2dude: How do you do that? Is it deep in the chrome settings?

The link: Firefox 3.5.1... only shows this post
The link: security issue and startup bugs.... gives the error: We can't find any posts with those tags. Or check your spelling and try again.

lol...i was just going to say "Great! ...now how long until Google Gears gets updated?"

  • zetafan

Some funny business with .net aswell. Didn't pay attention to the Firefox upgrade warning. Curses.

  • ski2dude

@Brian Perconti: I got this too... I turned off the compatibility checking before though and Gears is still working.

Over the last few updates all but I think 1 of my add-ons stayed compatible. Oh well, time to find replacements.

  • OptionalJoystick

@ErMac21: Were you on the 3.1 betas? Updates are released early for testers.

@Brian Perconti: I was about to say...

I thought Google Gears stayed compatible with minor updates like this?

  • mikekearn

I'm still waiting for a few of my more essential add-ons to update just to 3.5. It's been out for a while, guys, when's my freely provided stuff going to be updated?

  • Brian Perconti

Warning - Google Gears is showing incompatible with 3.5.1 patch!!

  • ErMac21

This update was available yesterday. thats when i got it. come on lifehacker get it together.

I think I'm sold on 3.5.1, the Portable version. Nice to be able to tote the whole damn thing on a backup, profile and all. I'll keep the installed version of 3.0.11 around for a bit, but I don't think it will stay long.
Also, anyone noticing more responsiveness from the new Gawker comment box? It still lags, but not as much.
