Toodledo Gmail Adds Robust Task Management To Gmail

Toodledo, a web-based task manager that’s friendly to Getting Things Done adherents or anyone looking for a serious but customisable reminder setup, adds a Gmail gadget to its arsenal of tools that let you track your to-dos anywhere you’re looking.

Toodledo was already available on iGoogle start pages and Google Calendar, so a Gmail gadget closes the loop for Google app fans.

The gadget can’t, unfortunately, directly create new tasks out of the emails you’re running through—that remains a unique feature of Google’s own Gmail Labs task manager. But if you’re used to Toodledo’s creation system, or Google’s tasks tool is a bit too simplistic for your needs, this new gadget should fit right into your work flow. Free to use, requires a free Toodledo account to use in the sidebar. Hit the link below for installation instructions.

I used to use RTM and tried Toodledo. I liked a lot of things better about Toodledo, but the lack of gmail message -> task creation is a showstopper for me. Recently I've just been using Google's tasks and that's doing the job for me.

I create tasks from emails all the time with toodledo. Just setup your unique email address on toodledo's settings and forward anything that will be a task. May have to change up the subject line a bit so it makes sense from the task list.

I'm a recent convert from RTM to Toodledo and am completely satisfied with the ongoing enhancements, the company's willingness to communicate and value its customers, and the functionality of the product. It's a great way to manage tasks.

It's good, but my left side panel is getting long now, with Labels and Google calendar. Have to scroll down for Toodledo.
I hope Google allow any widgets on the right side (not only labels). Calendar and Toodledo will do nicely on the right side.

@Forge42: I'm just starting to put together and use an organizational system for the first time ever. Gmail, GCal, GDocs, and my WM6 phone are central to the whole thing. To save from having to pay for a data plan for the phone, I'm using a GTD system implemented in RTM and integrated into Gmail. From my phone, I interface with RTM and GCal through Twitter using SMS text messages. www.twitter.com/gcal and www.twitter.com/rtm are the two twitter entities to follow.

@Forge42: Remember the milk has milksync for winmo, but it's not free. MS MyPhone will backup tasks (and most other stuff) and let you access them via the web. MyPhone is a free beta right now and it's not linked to any of the MS live features yet.

I am a Pro Plus subscriber to Toodledo and I have been using it since 2008. It's a great task management service and can track projects as well.

Toodledo is also honest with their customers and they try to implement all the suggestions and improvements we ask for.

This Gmail Plug-in is just another great way to use Toodledo for your task management needs. Toodledo is also great for GTD followers like myself.

(Looks like it's not exclusive to Gmail's Tasks...)

Another option for creating tasks out of emails is the Todoist bookmarklet, which takes the currently open email and creates a task containing a link to that email. Pretty handy.

Or, if using the Todoist Sidebar in Firefox, there is a link within the sidebar that does the same thing.

"The gadget can't, unfortunately, directly create new tasks out of the emails you're running through-that remains a unique feature of Google's own Gmail Labs task manager."

    *cough*

And the Remember the Milk plugin, which lets you create a new task by starring a message, giving it a certain label, or from the "More Options" menu.

I need something that links to emails like that. I tried Tasks and I really wanted to like it, but it just sucked so hard. :(

@wirehead2501: Actually, it works fine now. I just had to reload Gmail. Sometimes I forget to do that. (Sigh.)

  • wirehead2501

@FabianArmstrong: It still worked with RTM up until a few days ago. Gmail pushed an update that broke it, but according to the status page it's fixed now, so it should work again within a day or two (whenever the new version of the plugin gets released).

Is anyone aware of a cloud syncing option for tasks on Windows Mobile phones? Google Sync only does calendar and tasks. Toodledo can sync with Pocket Informant on the iPhone but not windows mobile, it seems (I certainly don't understand that!).

I've been searching high and low now for about a month to find a good cloud based service to sync my tasks with and I've come up empty handed.

    Any suggestions?

Quick followup: I installed it, and it looks great. My only complaint with this and many other Gmail Gadgets is that the fonts can't be adjusted. While the font is fairly small, things still wrap. I'd like to be able to adjust it down just a bit.

That's my problem with Gmail's Gadget implementation: The narrow width REALLY limits functionality. I do understand that it's often a fine balance between a lean UI and good functionality.

I recently switched over to Google Tasks from Remember-the-Milk, but I remember that RTM had a direct from email-to-task creation system in play for Gmail. Has this been broken with the latest updates to Gmail? I've been enjoying Google Tasks for its simplicity, tight integration with Gmail, and the fact that when Gmail updates, features aren't broken permanently and/or temporarily (as with RTM). However, I still miss RTM's recurring events, tags, and time-stamped notes.

I'll have to check this one out. It looks like it may have some good potential. I spend most of my day with a Gmail window open somewhere, so having ToodleDo access integrated into Gmail sounds sweet.

I really like ToodleDo. It has proven to be very useful and stable for me. I have an iPod Touch, and I've used the ToodleDo, ToDo (by Appigo), Pocket Informant, and many other "ToDo" apps. Most of these have ToodleDo excellent connectivity and synchronization capabilities. Currently, I've settled on Pocket Informant because it integrates both ToodleDo and Google Calendars.

Any guinea pigs out there want to try this with the Omnifocus-Toodledo script for a bit. I have enough trouble trying to keep one library in order....
