Gmail Notifier Plus Adds Email Alerts To The Windows 7 Taskbar
Windows 7 only: Gmail Notifier Plus displays your unread email count right in the Windows 7 taskbar, including popup message previews and Jump Lists integration.
Once you’ve launched the application, you will be prompted for your Gmail account information—after which you will see the unread count as an icon right on the taskbar button and hovering your mouse will show a preview of your unread email. Right-clicking on the button uses Windows 7’s excellent Jump Lists feature—with quick and easy access to frequent tasks like opening your inbox or composing a new email message.
Gmail Notifier Plus is a free download for Windows 7 only—hit the link for more screenshots and the free-registration-required download, or use the mirror to just download it quickly. For more ways to add email notifications, check out Growl for Windows or Gmail Notifier for Ubuntu.

Great. Now give us a gadget already.

Mirror for those of us without a neowin account?

@Derek Erdmann: I can vouch for Digsby. I love it! But with that being said, this would be pretty slick if I had Windows 7. But not enough to make me choose it over Digsby.

@wickedcupofjoe: No I don't. But they have great support. send them a bug notice.

im using a gmail script for growl for windows right now. it just tells you when you have new maill, double click to launch gmail

@dragonsbait: You should be able to use digsby to monitor the various accounts. Digsby supports gmail, ymail, hotmail, aol mail, IMAP, and POP3 mail accounts, and you can add more than one.

first of all; its jump list is as it should be and i liked it very much..
but;
i use small icons for my superbar don't combine 'em. so this app stays as a "blank app" with no text, if you use small icons,
it can not show mail count with small icon (of course),
it doesn't go to tray.
so i uninstalled it.
balcis
Is there any way to put this (or any item, for that matter) near the tray instead of with all of my windows?
It would be great if Windows Live Mail Desktop would work like this in Win 7...

@Derek Erdmann: Since Digsby was brought up - does anyone have any clue why it constantly disconnects me and then immediately reconnects me, giving the message, "You are now sending as ," which is the name I was already signed on as? This is all done within a conversation screen, so I'll be typing along, get the message, and then continue typing.
I've not used it for email notifications, but do love the facebook/twitter abilities. :)
@Derek Erdmann: But for those of us who don't use Digsby, and prefer a lighter weight messenger, this is perfect.
THIS IS SPARCTACULAR!!!1

This stuff is great, if you only have one email account with gmail. On the other hand, I have 12 active accounts, I watch constantly.
I use a toolbar to watch all my accounts.
@balcis:
Although a much larger audience uses yahoo and/or hotmail, I think most of the developers tinkering with these types of apps are the Gmail types.
I also think Google is a bit more open with their mail API... although as I typed that I remembered Yahoo open sourced some of their mail code... so take that with a grain of salt.

Ubuntu you can use mail notification (it can be found in the Add and Remove), with it you can add email accounts via POP3 or IMAP (that is how I use GMail notification).

@MS-18E Shadoblak:
I forgot about winKey+num -- despite LH covering it a couple times... Thanks for the reminder!
ericesque
For ubuntu you can use this one: [ubuntuforums.org]
PPA at: [launchpad.net]
@ericesque:
Just checked out the neowin post for more info-- this this IS very docklet like. Can't wait to see more of this kind of thing make it's way into mainstream.
ericesque
i just don't get it, why not for yahoo mail or hotmail, is it so difficult to create one little stand alone application?
just a little extension does it, webmail notifier; for firefox, but not any stand alone application just simple as this gmail notifier.
i just don't get it.
balcis
@Derek Erdmann: Plus for Digsby.
@Derek Erdmann: Same here. Why use yet another resource-sucking single-purpose app, when I can use a single app for more than one thing (digsby, for IM, gmail, ymail, facebook, twitter, etc., etc.).
(Yes, digsby probably uses more RAM, but it does so for more than one purpose, and I don't have to start yet another startup program.)

@Phoshi:
Do we know if the framework will support items that resemble docklets? I was always on again/off again with that stuff, but it could be interesting.
ericesque
@Derek Erdmann:
Yup. I prefer to dock Digsby on the right hand side of my aux monitor--which sits to the right of my main monitor.
I turn off the icons in the system tray and am in flux about the pop ups. Sometimes I like having them. Usually I don't. So I just display the unread count in the buddy list.
ericesque
This is actually really cool. I'm over 10 programs on my taskbar in W7 now so I can't use the Windows key+number for all of them anymore
Just use Digsby - it sits in your system tray and has pop-up notifications when you get mail. Plus it handles all your Twitter, Facebook, and IM notifications too.
Derek Erdmann
The only problem I can see with this is that the framework looks so easy to use, and the potential applications so wide, I'm going to need a bigger monitor :|
@perryizgr8: actually, when it's just small icons, and no combining; i find it more useful and a better mix of quick launch and tasbar.
balcis
Can this be used with Google Apps accounts or only GMail ?
bigga1986
@dragonsbait: For what purpose do you need 12 accounts separated? I have multiple accounts, but i have them all sync with one account with the option to reply using the account the email was sent to. Really, could you explain this to us?
@se.blackheart: also, this lacks an audio notification, so unless you check the icon, youre probably going to miss emails.
one problem is that it shows up as a small, ugly icon when you use alttab or wintab.
perryizgr8
pros: more functional than gmail notifier.
cons: the badge displaying your email count is too small and the right-click functionality stopped working.
@balcis: if you disable the functionality of win7 this app will not work. DUH!
perryizgr8
@dragonsbait: 12? isn't that a bit of overkill for ANY purpose?
perryizgr8
THIS is why I put Lifehacker in my feed. Even if use only 1 out of 20 of your suggestions, I'm making out like a bandit. Thank you for this pointing out this tool! BTW, the new taskbar is just one of the reasons I run the RC full-time, now.
nolabar10der
also, why does the right click functionality stop working after a certain amount of time?
this looks like it has potential but unfortunately I don't think it's working correctly for me.

"Mirror for those of us without a neowin account?"
This would be especially useful since you get an error when trying to register a new account.

@balcis:
The developer uses gMail and the application was for him.
SavvyFx
I love this app only prob is the number is hella small to read but I love the previews and the jump list great way to take advantage of the new windows 7 features.
Alex Deida
@Derek Erdmann: I've found Digsby to be rather slow. It was slow to start up and slow to start using. I prefer pidgin for IM and probably this now for email.
keenish27
Sure wish it supported hosted gmail accounts.
wedgen
@eyeverve: IF you absolutely need 12 accounts separated, that doesn't mean you can't read them, filter and tag them from a thirteenth one, and check that one with the notifier.
The digsby notifier is SO awesome... I'm a long time user of the gmail notifier and gmail manager extensions from firefox, and i love that I can just say "archive" or "mark as read" when the notification pops up, so I don't have to log in to delete that annoying facebook new mail.
On the other hand, gmail notifier probably did that, didn't it?
rafasan
OMG, you just taught me the coolest thing, okay I'm a compulsive exaggerator, but thanks fr the tip
