Vista Shutdown Timer Turns Off Your PC For You
Windows only: Tiny utility Vista Shutdown Timer turns your computer off at the time you specify—and even fades the volume out so you can stay asleep.
Using the no-install-required utility is easy enough—just choose the number of minutes to wait before shutting down or going into standby mode, and click the Run Timer button. You can also use the option to fade out the sound volume, which could really come in handy if you use your computer to play music at bedtime—so the volume will fade instead of a jarring cut-off when the system shuts down.
Vista Shutdown Timer is a free download, we tested it in Vista but it may work in XP—share your experience in the comments if it works for you. For a similar utility to schedule automated shutdowns, check out previously mentioned WinOff—or if you want to stop automatic updates from shutting down your computer, ShutdownGuard might be what you are looking for. Thanks, Marc!

I've always used Shutter for stuff like this-- it's simple but has a ton of options.

I created a batch file for shutdown to turn off my kids' pc's but it doesn't seem to run sometimes from the scheduled tasks. Will try this one out and see if it does better.

I always just use the command line for this task. Works for Vista and XP. Just open up CMD and type:
at 18:00 shutdown -s
And press Enter. Bingo, your PC will shutdown at 6pm.
I'm about to go home on lunch break so I will test and post back here.
If it doesn't work with XP, just create a batch file with 'shutdown' as the command. Then schedule it with task scheduler. Works with XP, Vista and Win7

I've been using Shutdown Monster for a while but recently it's been giving me some problems... I think I'll try one of those suggested in comments...
I've actually been looking for this for a while.

I use this program when I want to watch a show or movie before I go to sleep...works great, and the no-install part is great. Might have to try that CMD line trick though...

I've been using Switch-Off for years. It works with Vista as well.

@jtj: Hm... I've always just used the shutdown -s -t x (x = 3600 or however many seconds until shutdown). I didn't know I could actually input a time to shutdown at... I will have to start using this.
Also if anyone else tries this, and you decide you don't want to shutdown after all just enter shutdown -a in the command prompt and press enter. This aborts the shutdown.

Timed Shutdown accepts command line arguments and works flawlessly under XP x64. I've been using it for years without any problems.

I've been using NightTunes (iTunes "sleep timer" plugin) for quite a while now. Since it starts and shuts down with iTunes automatically, there's no need to start a separate application to shut down your PC at the end of a playlist (and NightTunes will only then shutdown your PC....not right in the middle of a song or a movie :-). Simple interface on top...that's all I need :-)
