Turn Old Fridge Magnets Into Handy Magnetic Bookmarks

Odds are that you don’t recall the colour of your fridge because it’s covered with magnetic calendars handed out by your dentist, estate agent and local council. DIY craft weblog Craft Chi demonstrates how to turn this “insane magnet situation” into a pile of whimsical, useful magnetic bookmarks.

Unlike ordinary strips of ribbon, old receipts, or business cards, a magnetic bookmark wraps around the page you’re marking and keeps your spot without slipping out using the magical powers of magnetism. It leaves those prone to dog-earing pages unable to whine that they keep losing their bookmarks and spares them from the wrath of aggravated bookworms.

A single magnetic calendar can be made into several bookmarks, and they’re easy to make, so why not give someone a pleasant surprise by leaving one in a book? Check the link for detailed instructions.

I use post-it tape flags for bookmarks. They stick to the page and don't add any bulk. They're cheap and disposable. Either get the narrow tape flags, or cut the 1" wide tape flags in half.

@#$(&*@^@!!! I just threw away 3 such magnets I removed from the fronts of phone books prior to recycling the books. Guess I'll just have to take one of the dozen or so off my fridge....

I just use old, redundant sticks of RAM. Funky yet functional. Geeky yet... er, chic-y. :-)

I'll have to see what magnets I have I can do this with. I am using a business card all the time and do occasionally lose it.....

Cute idea. I've seen commercial versions of this same concept at bookstores before. My wife has a few she uses all the time.

I can always trust this site to provide me with what I need when I need it. My brother recently got World War Z and we're both reading it but his bookmark keeps slipping out when I'm reading it and he gets really pissed off with it. Thank you Rosa for posting this!

I'm constantly running out of bookmarks and being forced to dog-ear pages. It really upsets me!

This is good. I received a package of commercial ones as a gift and they're handy. I also have to share my love of Book Darts: [www.leevalley.com]

But then again, if you leave the tacky magnets stuck on your fridge, you won't have drive errors when you put your novel and your Macbook Pro in your bag at the same time...

@AmphetamineCrown: Unless you use floppy drives any magnet strong enough to mess with a HDD would be strong enough to rip the blood straight out of your body...

@VenomIreland: You're quite welcome. I'm always up for finding a good book related hack.

Double the hack-factor! Use the name/address labels that various companies send you in the mail to make the hinge, instead of tape. The added bonus is the chance that someone will actually return your book to you if you lose it. Hey, it could happen.
