The Camouflaged Office

What can you do when white walls are too boring? Wallpaper them with camouflage and blend your workspace right into the urban jungle.

Lifehacker reader MacintoshDZNR managed to pull off having a pretty spartan workspace that isn’t devoid of personality thanks to the rather intense—though quite interesting—camouflage wall paper his home office is wrapped in. The workspace itself is almost entirely clutter free with only a few peripherals and his dual monitor setup. With a desk that large and so little on it, the only thing that stands between him and having a huge workspace for his analogue projects is moving the mouse and keyboard out of the way.

Why is he still running OS X Tiger? The upgrade to Leopard isn't that expensive, and worth it.

  • DeeJayQueue

what office? I can't see anything.

    DeeJayQueue

  • Kaessa

Very creative! I've love a workspace that large. Camouflage is not for me, but I have a son who would love it. I'd better not show him this picture.

  • .- -. --- -. -.-- -- --- ..- ...

I was going with a black wallpainting on one of my walls, but this is really cool too! Hmmm, wich to pick?

  • lozer4all

    @SuperTuna: and macs?

    lozer4all

  • ak

Nice, this is not tacky at all.

  • FunkyMonkey

This is my favorite workspace yet. Kudos!

  • Dr Durdon

@jupiterthunder: I'm curious as to what that thing is too. The guy who had the Mac-tastic Lair a couple weeks ago had one of these.

  • cayton

@mahimahi42: That's part of the camouflage. That's a PC running Vista.

  • brainshred

the desk is cool. The walls are NOT. It's too dark, and having such dark colors on the walls closes the space too much. It actually feels smaller than it actually is.

I don't know, it is most definetely NOT something i would enjoy working on.

    brainshred

  • Zefir

    I want that desk.

  • Zuzax

Is the Featured Workspace segment turning into some sort of running practical joke by the LH staff?

  • mgpcoe

@DeeJayQueue: Clearly he needs to blend into the thick, jungle brush of 14th Street.

Kidding, kidding. Just had to get that out. Not a bad setup; I like how he's got his workspace under control.. or just new computers.

The first thing I'd do different, though (not that anyone's asked), is to raise the second monitor to the same height as the iMac itself. I've had to do the screens-not-quite-lining-up-on-top-or-bo... thing and it gets really irritating. But then, YMMV.

All good ideas for lining the walls of my cubelet...

  • SuperTuna

@lozer4all: The whole wall paper reminds me of the (what the pc term for rednecks) gentlefolk who enjoy large trucks and their colorful display of shotguns.

    SuperTuna

  • bardophile

@lozer4all: way cool idea... escher wallpaper. any number of them would work

  • lozer4all

the wallpaper reminds me of the work by m.c. escher.

a metamorphosis print that would cover the whole wall would be tight.

    lozer4all

  • kitschl

@SuperTuna: it's not like LH to post blank pics...

  • OCEntertainment

While this is really cool, way better than any workspace I have, I would've given the guy a bajillion more cool points if the desktop wallpaper were the same patter as the real wallpaper.

  • jupiterthunder

Overall, this looks good. Don't like the camo for me, or the clock on the wall. Is that an analog calendar?

    jupiterthunder

  • SuperTuna

@DeeJayQueue: I can't find it either, maybe the link is broken? :D

    SuperTuna

  • onlysublime

I'd hide the fact that I own an iMac too...

    onlysublime

  • SMART599

    Pretty cool if your 12...

  • ryemcc

This photo is worthless! I can't even see the camo on the walls.

    ryemcc

  • Shashank Agarwal

@Zuzax: I don't see any problem with that. Some of them are pretty creative, and actually, I got my office desk organized today after getting some inspiration here. And I certainly feel it'll boost my productivity. :).

I guess there should be options for people to turn certain tags off. Maybe a more personalized lifehacker then?

    Shashank Agarwal

  • Varthley

I dislike the walls too, but it's more due to the fact that I'd chafe at the wallpaper clashing with every ornament I have - and this picture brings that fact out all too well.

  • mdznr

    @jupiterthunder:

It is actually an LED Tix Clock. Tells the time.

    mdznr

  • tannerjs

    @Dr Durdon:

The colorful, metallic looking thing is a TIX clock. I have one on my desk as well.

Thank you Jason for posting this. Pretty awesome having it posted here. Thanks!

its leopard, just a tiger mod wallpaper ;)

    VanniCabbie

  • mdznr

    @mahimahi42:

Sorry for the confusion. If you look really closely you may be able to see I am running Leopard. I just really love the Aqua Graphite wall.

    mdznr

  • mdznr

    @brainshred:

Sorry to hear that, I love my workstation and the wallpaper was there when I moved in, so I didn't really do anything but put my workstation there and build that desk.

  • UpshawAloeus

What is that cool, colorful gadget on the far side of the desk?

    UpshawAloeus

  • Natnie

Camo isn't my cup of tea... and neither is a spartan desk. It's difficult to believe any work actually goes on there!

    Natnie

  • urbanturban666

@OCEntertainment: or something that isnt from the stock collection... we know its a imac...

    urbanturban666

  • urbanturban666

    no camo desktop wallpaper?

    urbanturban666

  • Atamagaii

@onlysublime: Ohh... If that comment had come after the new banning rules came in... Cretin...

  • Atamagaii

@UpshawAloeus: Good question. I think I saw that in the Mac-Tacular Lair featured workspace.

    [lifehacker.com]

    Yep. Under the cinema display.

I have to have one. Looks oh-so-...70s TV show space ship.

  • Posco Grubb

@urbanturban666: Yeah, that's the first thing I thought of when I read "wallpaper". It would make the monitors disappear.

  • Atamagaii

@iamellis: Great! I can confirm that it's the TIX LED Clock from Think Geek.

    I want one.

  • iamellis

@UpshawAloeus: yep- it's an led clock i think

    iamellis

  • Bryan

    3 lamps?

  • Junno

One thing that usually annoys me, and believe me I don't know why, is when i see people with two un-matching monitors!!!!! =P I need therapy. LOL.

    Junno

  • virgilstar

What's with the caution tape? All it's missing is a stolen road sign and it would perfect the "dorm-room-chic" look. Seriously, this feature is turning into a joke; I can hardly believe that any work goes on in these crazy spaces.

  • msweston

I wonder if people decide to clean their workspace before they submit pictures... seems like there are a lot of clutter free desks around here - including mine, weird.

    msweston

  • MelvinaLance

Digi Camo would probably look better... and the clock...

    MelvinaLance

Seriously? that is way ugly. I couldn't possibly have such a wallpaper in my field of vision all day. My eyes would go nuts.
