Photoshop SpeedUp Optimises Photoshop Startup Time
Windows only: Even on a snappy system, Photoshop has a bit of a hang time during startup as hundreds of plugins load. Photoshop SpeedUp helps you optimise your Photoshop install and startup.
Photoshop SpeedUp allows you to selectively disable plugins to speed up start time and increase performance. If there are plugins you never use there is no harm in disabling them, on the off chance you do need them while working in Photoshop they’ll be loaded then. You can also set Photoshop to not load Adobe fonts CMap and Base. In addition to disabling items you can optimise the amount of system memory Photoshop will use. If at any time things feel weird or quirky you can run Photoshop SpeedUp again and hit the Restore button to turn it back to its pre-optimized state. The documentation for Photoshop SpeedUp indicates that it’s for Photoshop versions 3 through 8 only, but in our testing it also worked on higher versions of Photoshop. This may indicate that the structure of Photoshop hasn’t changed enough to break the tool or that we simply got lucky, your mileage may vary. Photoshop SpeedUp is freeware, Windows only.

@Josh Lewis:
I think this is mostly aimed for users who either cannot upgrade their RAM or have enough RAM but are bottlenecked by a sluggish CPU.

No problem on my machine as Photoshop CS3 opens pretty snappy... bout as fast as Firefox. Photoshop CS4 is another story, about three or four times as slow and program performance is abysmal. Anytime I move an image, even something incredibly small and simple the whole thing tiles, applying a filter doesn't even work, even after a reinstall it's safe to say Photoshop CS4 has severe issues. I think their GPU acceleration is broken.

With CS2 (identified as version 9.0) it threw an error stating "Invalid filename", but the startup time went from 24 seconds to 11 seconds so it appears that it worked anyway.
I'll post another comment if I find any issues that cause me to hit the restore button.

Photoshop has always had a lag time load up I started with version 5 and each version is the same.....
Even Gimp has a sluggish load up. Get used t it if you want to use Photoshop..... You can cut down on unused plugins, Mine are in a separate directory from Photoshop
in the folder pluginsxxx are the ones that I use all the time and pluginsxxx/extras is the one I don't use all the time but don't want to remove from the system. But the lag time has never changed .....

@Dai Tryon: New information is now coming in...Jeez Louise, I can't even open an image file now. Drastic measures are required. Stay tuned...

@QMurphy: I had that same problem with CS3 and Windows Vista... now that I upgraded the same system to Win7, the problem has disappeared.
@drzeller: Maybe the hybrid has tools I can use.
Dai Tryon
Or, spend 40 or 50 bucks, upgrade your ram, and get on with life.
Josh Lewis
My Photoshop loads in a couple seconds, however it takes like 30 seconds to open up a new document, even if it's 100x100.
@Dai Tryon: Your mileage wasn't as good. You need a hybrid.

I just tried it on 11 to disable the plug-ins, then ran it again to restore function to the plug-ins, and now none of my tools work. To be continued...
Dai Tryon
I like the idea of things loading only when you actually need them...
falter
I'm always a little leery of downloading from hideous websites.
At any rate, it doesn't do anything for Photoshop Elements. I may try it on CS3 when I get home.
i doubt this would work, my slow start up of CS4 comes from creating the 60GB temp file from the 15GB image :D

"Your mileage may vary" - this one is getting old real fast

now if only there was a way to install plugins on the fly, or at least enable them as needed. there are tons of free plugins out there that are one trick ponies and you mess around with them to get some samples to what they do, then forget about them until you think of them again.
also installing fonts on the fly shouldn't be too hard either. why doesn't that work, it works for the system.
i run CS4 on 4gb of ram, i have maybe 30 or 40 plugins loading at startup, i've never really considered the load up time to be that significant... CS4 incorporates more features that have to do with your video card and drivers, if you don't have the proper drivers, it could load ps much slower i've found!

@mahumphrey: lol well said!!! +2 for malhumphrey

@Alessandro Romano: You mean your comment? Thanks.

@falter: me too. i hate superfetch as much as i hate efficiency.

@cwebb1977: so nothing constructive to add then? if you don't like that particular cliché, use greasemonkey to replace the text wherever it is found.

@Dai Tryon: This is my final dispatch. Ran the SpeedUp tool again just for the hell of it. This time it didn't even find a Photoshop install. After doing that, I uninstalled version 11 (with the help of Revo--great program), reinstalled said version, and now all is fine--the tools again work on the images I can now open. This is Dai Tryon, Software Correspondent, signing off.

Meh, Photoshop starts in 5 seconds for me.

@mahumphrey:
Nice, what a "Web 2.0" comeback-answer.

@Josh Lewis: Or are limited by their os. Photoshop eats ram like crazy, and even with 4 gb (well, 3.25) it still takes a while to open
@QMurphy: I used to have this problem as well. I read somewhere it's due to having a missing printer set up in control panel. Yeah just did a Google search, most people say it's because the default printer is on a network or because it's missing. Try checking that, hopefully will fix your problem.

This app sounds great. just downloaded it.. and the interface is just terrible.. it really looks awful :(
When you boot it up it asks for witch version i have wich is cs3 and it suggests 11.0 hmm i dont know if cs3 is 11.0 very confusing.
And when i close the app an ugly ad pops up asking me if i want to purchase a PDF converter.. wtf?
I did not test this app.. it just looks to unprofessional.

Wheres the "heart" icon Lifehacker? I want to clip this to my favorites?
I used this freebie and it seems to be quite simple and effective - plugin commander http://www.thepluginsite.com/products/picopro/index.htm

Mine loads in 12 seconds. Not much of a problem, so I don't really have a need for this. If I was using my older computer, however, this probably would have worked great.
Natnie
It really works, saves more than 50% start-up time.I had been looking for this time saving application. No malware or any type of virus, its totally safe. thank you for reading
CarynJibber
Nah, I'll pass. I still find the slow start-up to be convenient because it loads everything you need.
