Music Artist Cloud Shows You New Music

If you’re looking for some new tunes, Music Artist Cloud creates recommendation clouds of new artists based on the music you already enjoy.

Plug an artist or group into Music Artist Cloud and it spits back a cloud of names weighted by relation to your search. Clicking on any of the tags in the clouds generate a new cloud based off that new selection. There’s a side bar of artists and groups most similar to the one you search for, and beneath the cloud there are YouTube videos of the artist you’re currently viewing. it’s a good spot to do some exploring, but for other interesting recommendations, check out We Are Hunted and Wired’s guide to find new music on Twitter.

    You forgot to link to the site!

    It actually works, and it passed my test -- it knew about Prometheus Burning, Ryoji Ikeda, Tempest, and even The Wretch.

    I don't like the autoplay thing going on with its YouTube videos, but I'm impressed that it actually has obscure stuff listed.

    LOL @ the irony of the pairing of the sample cloud to the article's title! :o)

    Reminds me of MusicPlasma.

    @AnthonySpork:
    input: Pink Floyd
    output: Britney Spears, Blink 182, Jay Z...

    I don't know, it just doesn't seem like a productive way of finding music.

  • mhagen2531

    @mhagen2531: Ohhh, I know what happened. It recommended the artist Thunderball, but pulled a video with a title of Thunderball. Maybe the site needs to do a better job of finding accurate videos.

    I'd like to know what kind of algorithm they use, or where they get their data. It didn't do a very good job for me; the highest recommendation for Thievery Corporation (lounge) was Thunderball (heavy metal). Maybe it's trying to get me to cross over to a new genre?

    @sublime46: meh. I put in "The Human Abstract" and it came up with "Madonna" Other than being wrong sometimes, it's a pretty neat site.

    The only problem is that you might end up listening to all the same kind of music. It would be cool to have a program that recommends music that's totally different from what you listen to. Variety is key.

    I tried Music Artist Cloud, and also tried musicplasma. I got better results with Music Artist Cloud.

    The layout could be improved, but I'm happy with finding a couple of artists I haven't heard of before. With any luck Spotify will have tracks.

  • Jason Fitzpatrick

    @gafhptva: You make it a point to waste all that time complaining but you don't even suggest some of the alleged "worth of mention that have never been discussed here" music discovery tools?

    Way to fail at being a useful complainer.

  • ZahirDioscuri

    The Zune's Mixview feature does this in a much slicker way.

  • gafhptva

    Not remotely one of the more impressive music discovery tools. Many more are worthy of mention that have never been discussed here before than this one. I thought about bookmarking it for certain unimaginable future situations but realized I was fooling myself & wasting my time and effort. This one will be missed by not many, if any.

  • HagarDarnsies

    I can tell from your screenshot there that our music tastes have a whole lot in common.

    Not sure if the technology is proprietary or not, but the visual artist map on What.CD (invite only) is pretty great, and it even has graphic "nodes" to depict groupings of artists.

  • fiman16

    @Jason Fitzpatrick:

    here is THE music discovery tool. it's called last.fm and it is unmatched in ease of operation and overall usefulness.

    Hi all, The better and simplest way for me to find new artist is using MediaRok in Media Monkey. I think it use Last.fm database and its really handy. (Sorry for my bad english)
