Mozilla Weave To Integrate Auto-Logins To Firefox

We’ve shown you how Mozilla Weave syncs your browsing experience—including bookmarks and passwords—in the past, but the folks at Mozilla are hoping to improve this experience with integration for automatic web site logins.

The Mozilla Labs weblog explains how the developers behind Weave are working to create an Identity component that would add single-click or completely automatic logins to Firefox, streamlining the work normally required to manage your online identity.

Password managers and autocomplete aren’t new (KeePass does it, LastPass does it, 1Password does it, and I’m sure other apps or services do, too), but Weave’s Identity feature promises to throw an interesting new hat into the ring. Not only will it support traditional username/password logins, but it also does OpenID, and it’ll work on Mozilla’s budding mobile browser, Fennec.

Right now the new features aren’t available with the stable version of Weave, but if you’re impatient you can get the functionality from Weave’s latest development snapshot. In the meantime, be sure to check out the Weave Identity in the browser screencast to see it in action.

If weave would finally deliver the one piece of GBS that they have been promising for the past 18 months, I would actually use it. Tab state sync.

@IBoris: God, I'd kill for extension sync.

I used weave for a while but I decided to wait until it matures more... right now I'm using a combination of Xmarks(foxmarks) and Lastpass and couldn't be happier with the functionality. Lastpass's form fill option is also a top-notch time saver.

@pdfetc: Ditto - Last Pass is awesome. Plus, if you used bookmarklets, it's portable to both Safari, Chrome and even the iPodTouch/iPhone

@xxdesmus: 100% agree. Extension sync. would kill IMO.

I want extension/theme sync (within the same platforms: Windows to Windows, Mac to Mac, etc) ...that would be AWESOME.

I have read about Weave working with Thunderbird. I have been looking for something to sync all mail between 2 computers that use Thunderbird. Anyone have any experience with Weave for this?

So would weave work with sxipper or are they basically in the same space? Perhaps sxipper could be a front end for a weave back end?

Now it just needs to support generating secure passwords and I can stop using LastPass.

I don't understand, how is this different from, say, Sxipper? I'm currently using a combination of Sxipper and Password Safe. While there is some degree of overlap between them I use Sxipper mainly for the convenience of associated web sites with credentials for that site and Password Safe as a "master list" for all my sensitive information.

If Sxipper could access my Password Safe directly (or if there were a Firefox plug-in that could use my Password Safe database as the "backend" for storing credentials) then it would be perfect.

"latest development snapshot" won't work with the latest firefox version...

When trying to install "latest development snapshot" with FireFox version 3.0.10 it says it's incompatible ? Ideas ?

Here's some previous work on this type of thing.... http://bit.ly/RG2CH http://blog.vidoop.com/2008/08/developer-preview-identity-in-the-browse.../

@Michael Tiller: I use sxipper too, but I thought that sxipper was a per machine kind of thing whereas weave is a multi machine solution.

If I use two machines (which I do) then I need to move my sxipper data back and forth to keep them in sync or handle it manually.

If I use weave, then the data is on a server and wherever I am I can interact with it.

I like the sxipper UI, so if I col get sync + sxipper that'd rock.

@pallendo: We do sync tabs, actually. It's really useful with Fennec, in fact.

If it's not working for you, please file a bug in bugzilla.mozilla.com!
