iWatchSyncer Automatically Adds New Music To iTunes
Windows only: Free application iWatchSyncer monitors any folder on your computer and automatically adds new MP3s to your iTunes library, bridging a very annoying gap in the default iTunes behaviour.
Unlike most modern media player applications that sport the elementary ability to set up a folder (or folders) to watch for new content, you’ve got to manually add any new MP3s to iTunes unless you purchase said MP3 from the iTunes Store. (Hmm, I wonder why that might be.) iWatchSyncer monitors any folder on your computer and automatically adds any new track it sees there—meaning that whether you downloaded some new tracks of the internet or bought a new album via some source other than iTunes, you don’t have to hassle with the manual import every time.
Previously mentioned iTunes Folder Watch offers the same functionality (and then some), but it’s always good to have options. iWatchSyncer is a free download, Windows only, requires .NET 3.5.

@shadoblak:
i never used it in it's beta stages but with last.fm it's amazing to me. i added exorcist and all the last.fm add on's and i couldn't be happier. since its opensource and FF built being able to tab into a web browser is nice too.

@zmnatz:
but wouldn't it be easier if you just dragged the music into your one folder and it automatically went into itunes?

So iTunes needs a 3rd party app to catch up with one of the features that made me leave it for Zune?
interesting

Honestly, I don't know if it's just me but I actually prefer all my music in one place so folder monitoring and all that are pointless for me. I just like to be able to drag the files over to iTunes and done, music in music folder don't have to worry about file management. If its in my itunes library its in my music folder. I can delete it anywhere else i see the files. Anyone else prefer this simple approach?
@mcdavey:
Your right that its a very basic feature which makes me believe Apple left it out on purpose.
There would a a sh*tstorm if apple only allowed itunes purchases to be added/synced. Since they can't do that, why not just make it difficult for outside sources to be added?

@mcdavey: I haven't tried Songbird since waaay back. How has it progressed? It always seemed like it had real potential.
shadoblak
I think most other software has this built in already. i've been using songbird since it can sync with a lot of devices on the fly. i am going to try mediamonkey though now too since it sounds interesting. apple always come to the party a little late for what many would think to be basic features.

I own an iPod and because of that i've learned to use itunes by default. I like using the itunes store to find poscasts but I don't buy my music from there. My biggest complaint of itunes has always been lack of folder monitoring. This is very welcomed, thanks for the post!
Enter MediaMonkey FTW

Thats one of the things I liked about the Zune software over iTunes, it has this built in...Now if only it were as cross platform and widely supported..

@Yuliya Gorlina:
Amazon's installer automatically adds the mp3's to your itunes library.
This is for people who download mp3's from other websites / p2p networks since they have to manually for to file>add to library etc. everytime you download new music.

Sweet....

There is a App called Hazel for Mac. It's mainly an automated file organizer but it can be used to monitor individual folders and add mp3s automatically to iTunes.

@Paul Werner: Media Monkey is fantastic, and about one tenth the size of itunes (a six meg DL versus 60 megs I believe). iTunes also sucks is have a huge collection. Runs slow as hell. Takes forever to load.
Media Monkey even syncs with my iPhone faster than iTunes does.
Anything that does the same thing for Mac?
Would speed up my blog downloading hugely.

When I buy music on Amazon, it shows up in the library. Am I misunderstanding something?

This and the Chrome dual view bookmarklet have made my day! Nice one LH :)

I always hated that an otherwise great program like iTunes wont auto add new songs. I've been using iTunes Library Updater (ITLU) but this looks much better!
mister_bojangles
I left iTunes a long time ago for MediaMonkey (loving the On-the-fly Audio Conversion and Leveling for Syncs and Burns)

Can it be a mapped (network) folder?? I store my media on my media server and then use iTunes on my desktop to retrieve it. I also use a symlink on the media server, so I'd be really interested to see if this little program could follow the link.
jkrell
How does this stack up against "itunes library updater"?
@mister_bojangles: I dunno, on both my old Dell and on my Macbook, I just drag and drop from my torrent folder, then delete the originals after it's done copying. No file menus or anything.
Bad name for the program though, the first thing I thought of was this:

Thank you, LH!
@zmnatz: Yeah, it works great if you manage your collection with itunes from the start. if youre used to managing your mp3s by hand its very frustrating to have an application mess up your folder structure. Because its either that or relying on 3rd party tools to update your itunes library. Both ways suck for windows users who just got that shiny iphone/ipod touch ;)
Generally with anything mac related you have to change some of your old habits to fully enjoy and appreciate it - and it might not be worth the bother for people who just want to sync their music to their itoys :)
Also, itunes is a lot better on the mac - its faster and integrates better to the desktop. on windows it feels out of place and is (as others mentioned) slow as hell so i perfectly understand people not wanting to use it - i wouldnt.
Hmmm, found me a new weekend project! :)
jquack
Yes exactly. I cannot believe itunes still does not have this built in. How elementary.
AprilJaguar
I installed it and nothing happened. I went on and installed the itunes folder watch, it was better.

Thanks guys for all the nice comments on my application :)
If there are any requests to the tool, just add them in the discussion area on codeplex!

its pretty crazy that this isn't built in to itunes, is there any mac solution for this?

A second thumbs up for Mediamonkey. I never understood why iTunes was so painful to use no matter what powerful machine I had it installed on. And once you get above a couple thousand songs, forget iTunes. It'll take 2 minutes to load (30 seconds of which is just the program itself). MM handles my 16,000 files with aplomb, is infinitely customizable if you're into looks, supports all sorts of plug-ins, runs like hot knife through butter, and, of course, scans my watch folder for any changes (and does so in less than one minute at startup). Don't forget the intensely powerful tagging and organizing options via Amazon database. Also - no extraneous software installs or background services. It's been over a year for me, now, and I'm never going back! bwahahahah
nolabar10der
how compatible is this with multi-profiles on itunes?
@shadoblak:
I just switced back to Itunes from Songbird. Don't get me wrong, I'm all about FOSS, but Itunes is the standard for a reason. Altoughh it's very functional, Songbird is just waaaayyy to slow and a little buggy still.
Doron Ben Chaim
I can't believe people still put up with this crap, having to use a 3rd party tool to do something pretty rudimentary. Humble little musikCube has had this from the start.
RomanaPostumus
@jkrell: Was wondering the same thing. Interested to know if this works. Thanks.

i dont see the need for this at all... i transferred all of my itunes library from my desktop to my new laptop using my external harddrive all i had to do was click and drag the folder from the hdd to my itunes library. if you change your itunes preferences to automatically organize music folders and add say consolidate library, your good to go. maybe im missing something but this app seems pointless.
OgdenMelachony
@Lajcik: I agree entirely. I was shocked the first time I ran itunes on my mac. It runs better on that than my windows pc which is 2 years younger (bought a used powerbook g4). It's so much faster on the mac. I agree that you have to use itunes from the start which I have done. Video organization and everything else I've done manually forever and get pissed off when they get messed with by apps but music has always been an itunes affair for me. Now if only iTunes would add a built-in feature to sync music between computers on a network.
