Google Reader for me. I hear of lots of people using stuff like twitter or FriendFeed, but it is still RSS feeds for me.

The first three I observe through Gwibber, though AlertThingy used to serve this purpose for me. Gwibber also hooks into the rare RSS feeds, Google Reader, and Facebook.

The first thing we need to do is define "news." I'm pretty hardcore about that: News is the thing produced by reporters when they are reporting. Note that it isn't the product of people riffing on some piece of news, which includes talking heads, reporters on talking had shows, talk radio, social media 9 "Hey! Did ya hear? New Yok blew up.")

I begin my morning with a handful of news sites in my browser, beginning with the BBC. Next, I take a stab at my newsreader. Then, I scan and read the local newspaper. I never watch cable news of any description unless I'm in someone's waiting room. I may listen to talk radio while I'm in the shower, but nothing on talk radio merits being called news. I'll return to the newsreader during the rest of the day. I often watch a few minutes of the local 24/7 TV news channel, and seem to catch a few top-of-the-hour 5-minute newscasts on local radio and NPR.

I have email subscriptions at various websites, and I have GMail forward me the letters via sms to my cell phone.

Twitter, Tumblr, and podcasts are my main sources of tech news. I supplement with a healthy dose of Hacker News (see link) and whichever news website I'm least angry at - Drudge Report and CNN are my current faves, though I've frequented Reddit in the past. The local newspaper here in Fargo, North Dakota is decent and I try to read it at least once a week. TV is rubbish and RSS is just plain annoying.

My news comes from the web then tv

I use Google and begin from the UK the BBC website a lot. I have RSS feeds set up for my sports news from both the BBC and Sky Sports. My mainstream news comes from google and the news I normally wouldn't read about comes from Digg.

I tend to then use the TV every night at 10 O'clock to fill in the gaps with important news on BBC 24 or the Sky News TV channel.

The only thing I use newspapers for is the sudoku and the crossword occasionally.

Mostly good old fashioned newspaper. Especially for local stuff. One thing my local paper did that drives me nuts on their internet site. It used to be you had the option of picking a section and reading that section like you would have a hard copy of the paper. Now you have to know exactly what you want to read. (Say I want to read sports, I have to choose a team or other specialized menu, problem is I don't read that way most of the time.) Yahoo is more reader friendly.

Mixed with a little bit of local TV news and various internet sources. Most of my stuff from radio is of the sports talk variety.

I've got NetNewsWire setup to retrieve RSS feeds from sites such as Lifehacker and Engadget. For UK news I go to the BBC website and when I want more in-depth information I normally go to Google News and follow a link from there.

Plus I'm lucky enough to work in a small home office by myself, so I've normally got the radio on in the background and get hourly news updates that way.

1) daily scan of local newspaper and WSJ
2) daily feed of tech news and opinion columns via Google Reader
3) weekly scan of The Economist, Newsweek
4) monthly scan of The Atlantic and IEEE Spectrum
5) weekly podcasts via MediaMonkey

News junkies, here. Our alarm radio gently awakens us to two hours of NPR: we gently snooze, in and out of awakedness, then listen to the "recycled" airing of the 5-7 broadcast, fully awake, from 7-9. While listening and drinking morning coffee.

During the day, I read techmeme, LH, HuffingtonPost, and various other feeds gathered through newsgator (checking back several times). I look for links and rumors in twitter.

In the evenings, we watch TV local and national news. BBC World News, NOW, and various other stuff such as 60 Minutes...

Fed up, you might say.

100% web.

"All internet news, all the time?" you know it. The only thing a newspaper does for me is show me ads, radio only gives me music, social stuff just gives me trends, TV can kiss my @$$ for news, and that's about it.

First, I don't think that chart is valid. It implies that over a period of time, we will get our information uniformly from a very limited set of sources. I think the opposite will be true; that news will be delivered by all sorts of sources, and each older archetype will simply slowly give way to the next one.

I get the news through either my parents or people at my school. I don't really keep up with current events, though I have a latest news ticker on my iGoogle that I glance at every once in a while

Mainly sites such as reddit, twitter and bbc. Newspaper about once a week and tele every now and then.

General news: newspapers, magazines, ***pbs*** (News Hour, BBC), local tv (not loyal to a station, since they all have the exact same thing), my dad <--best resource, hands down =)

Mostly Internet sources (MSNBC or WSJ.com). I did like the Wall Street Journal subscription on my Kindle quite a bit, but I found it was hard to keep up with all that content (and since I was subscribing to the entire newspaper, I felt like I simply HAD to read as much as possible each day to make that subscription worthwhile).

I can't remember the last time I watched the news on TV. I'm almost 100% web. Blogs and websites. I don't use social networks etc for news because you don't know what is true, rumor or plain invented.

I have several sources for local, national and world news then average out the noise. For example, CNN, BBC, ABC and MSNBC for national and world. Even then you get some stories where each source has a different version of some basic fact like number of dead or injured in a crash.

My main news sources are websites of newspapers - nytimes.com and my local newspapers' websites. I also check out Google News and Yahoo News. On the weekends I tune in to CNN to see if there's anything interesting there. During the rare days that i drive, I tune in to the local news stations and commentary. For gossip/fashion I just check your sister site Jezebel.

I just finished reading the article and it's not well written. The proof lies partly in the proofing. Somebody's not doing it. This is what's still wrong with a lot of online news and editorials.... they're written by amateurs, and in this case, by someone who merely summarizes the past, and doesn't even do it very well. Too sketchy I mean. Also, the author's predictions for the future are too glowing and presumptuous, based as they are on the person's infatuation with the new ways of getting and reporting news. This is where I wish more professionalism would kick in. I want to see good writers doing blogs, the ones who are said to be losing their jobs at major papers. They don't have to be Pulitzer prize winners, just be willing to research and proofread their work. Also, they need to know their tech and their history and their spelling and grammar. These are not options, imo.... they're musts.

In short, the article reads like a highschool essay.

Well, I use my RSS reader (NetNewsWire), and I get feeds from the NY Times (and from Lifehacker, TUAW, macworld, daring firebal and others). I also read 2 newspapers: The New York Times, and I also read The Wall Street Journal. I also get NY Times "breaking news" emailed to me. I also use twitter for that (to some extent), and The Daily Show and The Colbert Report are also news suppliers.

We're the 'web version' of the tv news.

For at least 6 hours a day part of my job is to stare at the tv and watch news.

Viigo on my BlackBerry.

Reuters and BBC on my iGoogle page.

Daily Echo online for local news (Southampton, Hampshire, UK).

BBC Radio 1 wakes me up and is usually on in my car on the way to and from work, so I get some news from that.

Sometimes catch news on the TV, and if a friend or college mentions that they have heard or seen something in the news that was particularly interesting I will sometimes look it up on the net.

But maybe that's asking too much of an article that's shallow and meant for quick consumption and disposal. I only regret that I spent time consuming it.

One other comment regarding the chart. It is plain wrong and this is actually the kind of chart which plays with reality to deliver a message.

Why? Well because the time axis is not linear and gives the impression that over the last 200 years "Local Marketplace" (to take an example) was predominant just at the beginning. When you look at the axis it is actually true roughly until 1900, so it should take about half of the graph.

I know that it's not that attractive 'cause the small unreadable strip at the right would not make it -- but then either you want to show something real or you just want to play with a graph.

It's interesting to see that not many people listen to the radio. It's kinda interesting as one can hardly read a newspaper, watch TV or browse the web when driving (though, you know, I live in Paris...) so radio is juste great for that.

Then there are activities like cooking, washing the dishes and others where you can hardly concentrate on TV and certainly not on the web.

90% of my news does not fall into the 'normal' new category. I use 5 different (specific)blog sites for Sci-fi / Auto / Finance / & tech news. I also use Twitter for local news but may not check it as often as the blogs.
For weather (I live in OK, its important) I have 3 different apps on my phone.

I can't remember the last time I saw a piece of "news" for the first time on an actual television news program. Normally the game comes of figuring out which of the 500 stories I see every day via Twitter, RSS, etc... will actually make it to the next day's news where my less geeky friends (and my wife :)) will learn about it.

In my house the morning routine goes something like this: We Tivo the news starting at 5am, but we don't get up until 6:15. We hang out and watch 15-20 minutes of news, skipping commercial breaks, to get the highlights. I should say my wife does this, because there's little on that I haven't seen the previous night on my feeds, so typically for a story she's interested in I'll hit up my iPhone and get her the *real* latest news.

Other than that, local news is good for little more than sports (clips) and weather, and the occasional local interest story. All of which I could probably find online if I really cared, but for each of those it's more a case of "It's valuable only so far as it's playing out in front of me, I wouldn't go hunt it down."

I just wanted to point out that while pretty, this graph is highly subjective and misleading. It omits the telephone because Mr. Baekdal does not feel that it's an important form of communication. (Really?! For all it's faults, the telephone communication is one of the purest forms of communication that exists!) Also, the time scale is very inconsistent, ranging anywhere from 50 years between marks to 1 year between marks, depending on Mr. Baekdal's whims.

I think it's interesting if you look at that graphic and you see that social news starts up right where local marketplace tapers off. Interesting because they're really the same thing, at the core. You know, netmunity is new community, right?

i'm never at ease reading the news holding a mouse or typing on a keyboard so i always get my news from the TV sitting on my lazyboy with the tv remote on my right side table and a plate of chips/sandwich/ice cream/etc on the left side table plus a mug of brewed coffee.
