GuruLib Catalogues Your Media And More

If you’re looking for a simple way to catalogue your piles of movies, music, books, games, and software GuruLib is a handy tool for cataloguing them all in the same place.

GuruLib is bursting with features in comparison to many cataloguing websites. Not only can you set up a personal library for everything from your movies to your software and just about every media type in between but doing so is extremely easy. You can search by title, plug in the UPC/ISBN number, or even use your webcam or mobile phone camera as a barcode scanner. There are wish lists and loan tracking tools to keep tabs on who has your stuff. GuruLib has widgets galore, you can set your library up as a cover-flow style screensaver, share your library with a Facebook plugin, create RSS feeds and integrate your Amazon habits into your library with a bookmarklet. Just as welcome as all the cool tools is the ease with which you can import and export data into GuruLib. If you have your own favoured tool for tracking your stuff, let’s hear about it in the comments.

But can it do comic books? Comic books have barcodes printed on them, but I can not find anything that can make any sense of them. Perhaps a shared solution where everybody can scan a couple of their comics and upload the barcode values into a shared database would solve this...

@OCEntertainment: Delicious Library plugin? I like it.

I've been using GuruLib for while now as a replacement for Mediaman (which I enjoyed, but didn't want to pay). It's a great tool, and I use the ISBN functionality all the time, however I could never get the Barcode scanner to function, but it could be that my 1.2mpx is not quite hi-res enough to accurately read the barcodes. No complaints - the ISBN sometimes pulls back some interesting results from amazon, but overall good deal. hoping to get a desktop client soon. :-)

I found Med's Movie Manager to be a much more effective program!

My favourite feature is being able to search a directory full of AVI files.

Whoa, this is the first time I've actually experienced the lifehacker effect. I'll check back tomorrow to see if things have cooled down. Seems kinda awesome though.

@Nickcompoop: "Not only can you set up a personal library for everything...but doing so is extremely easy. You can search by title..."

No barcode or ISBN necessary, just type in the name of the media file and you're off to the races.

@fiji.siv: While I can't say for sure, I'd guess that Jason's child may play a part in this collection. ;)

  • Nickcompoop

I see all these great features for easily getting the info on the box to give you all the info (bar code, ISBN), but what if our collections are... lets say, non-physical (pirated or ripped)? Then all those nice features goes to waste. Thats why I use an IMDB account and "Add to My Movies" and refer to that list.

  • OCEntertainment

This looks like it has the potential to be really amazing, if only it has a desktop client or at least interface. Also, the speed of the barcode scanning might make this a bit more cumbersome than I might like. If it takes to long, I could just as easily type in a title to search box with an Amazon search. But it definitely sounds intriguing.

I'd take a look at it right now, but, as has been said, it seems like the site's having a little problem with the Lifehacker crowd. ;-)

    Maybe later.

  • McWhammer

@fiji.siv: Please, you don't have to be young to enjoy good animation (ie every Disney or Pixar movie).

Don't know if that's his personal screenshot or not, but it's a respectable one.

Also, yeah, the site needs some rest time before visiting. And their copyright is from 2007 - that's a pet peeve of mine. At least update your fake copyrights, website owners!

  • pesil

I guess it suffered the Lifehacker effect!

    Damn, perfect for my needs!

  • fiji.siv

Jason, judging by your taste in movies you're obviously a lot younger than I imagined.

@Cyborgmatt: I was thinking the same thing. Useful, but needs some serious polishing on the UI.

  • Cyborgmatt

Interface could use a makeover, looks useful though.

  • JuryDuty

I love it! Last time when we did a High 5 for these, I didn't find any one solution that was free that worked for me. But this is WONDERFUL. I'll be an active user, I'm sure. Thanks, LH!

  • Slart

it needs to improve its library... so far it only recognized about a dozen of the codes I scanned. might be because of my non-americanity, though.

  • wickedcupofjoe

I was able to sign up but it's moving slowly. I'll wait until later to full around. Looks interesting! I do love the borrowed items section - with a family of thieves, er, movie lovers, that's one to come in handy. :)

  • wickedcupofjoe

@Adam Pash: I think that's what he wants YOU to think. ;)

But hey - either way, I'm a huge fan of animation. I still remember crying in the movie theatre while watching The Lion King - I was 16. :)

  • dchall8

I'm always suspicious when someone allows me to list my belongings on their website...for free.

I use Griffith to catalog my movies. Works fine. Costs nothing. Collects data from IMDB and other Internet movie databases.

  • TheFu

Digital media is cataloged via `ls -Rl` shoved into numbered text files. The number maps 1-for-1 to the DVD the files are held on.

I used a java-based catalog for a few years, but didn't like that searches couldn't be across **all fields** in the record. OTOH, `egrep WHATEVER *txt` does wonders.

The best part is that my web search engine e-swish++ finds these txt files and adds them to my internal web site search catalog. This lets folks that don't like the command line also search my media.

    @fiji.siv: Don't tell Adam. I'm nine.

  • HeddaTullus

You want Comicbase (www.comicbase.com) for that.

  • ZeroOsgood

How long until Amazon adds something like this? Is there something like this already?

    ZeroOsgood

  • TimHare

For CDs, looking for something like CDAid from www.marvitec.com; it has to get CD info from freedb or similar, but _not_ rip the CD . This is to provide an inventory for use at a college radio station. Obviously, there are legal issues surrounding CD ripping in such a situation - but having an inventory of tracks is very desirable.

@wickedcupofjoe: I can't say I cried during the lion king... but 20 years after the fact the death of Optimus Prime still gets me:

  • Peter200lx

@OCEntertainment: I just tested the webcam barcode feature, and was decidedly impressed. I only had to wave the DVD box in front of the camera, and hold it still for a fraction of a second, and it would beep saying that it had decoded the numbers from it. It was the fastest implementation I've seen so far.

  • askj113

@Peter200lx: That's impressive, I've had really lousy results from my laptop's built-in cam, maybe this'll work for me

  • ShaheenaBollocks

this is great for books as well as movies and doesn't have a 200 book limit like LibraryThing's free account.

    ShaheenaBollocks

  • SukeshiGesh

sounds like a neat app, just need a client for a mobile device and instantly all your 'have I read this before' questions in the store are resolved.. but..I'm not convinced how much backing/support they've got...on their blog Jan 23 - garage sale to raise funds.. Aug 2 - 4 day outage due to ISP Jun 22- Major HW failure I would make sure I've re-exported my library once I've built it with them...

    SukeshiGesh

  • tali3sin

You know, I'm still not entirely convinced as to why I need or want to use a service like this.

All my DVDs are on a bookshelf, all my bookshelves are near each other, all my CDs are now files, and all of my files (music or video) are on the same hard drive, near each other, in a semi-to-well-organised fashion.

So, if I can already see most of my belongings in a glance - why should I add another step?

    tali3sin

  • TheSoccerBum3

I use libra too. Pretty slick. Initially I didn't think I was able to use my webcam to scan in my movies, but eventually and some playing around with angles and lighting it worked great. Was able to catalog 250+ DVDs pretty quickly. The interface looks sharp too. You can also track who let borrow your movies etc... I've exported my library as an excel file. I wonder if this tool can import?

    TheSoccerBum3

  • jabber

@tali3sin: Well, it helps you keep track of your stuff should you lent out your dvd, cd, or book to a friend. Beside it looks somewhat nice to have a program like this.

    jabber

  • jabber

As much as this is really nice I still prefer "Libra" that was featured here last year which is pretty much now abandonware. You could still find in if you Google it. The nice thing about it is that you can integrate VLC or whatever program you fancy into the catalog function and play the desire movie, music or ebook.

@RenitaHippolyta: I bought a really cheap modded CueCat on eBay (like $10 or $15. Used that to scan all my books into a text file and them imported the file to GuruLib. Worked like a charm once I realized that the barcode I needed to scan was the one on the inside cover, not the back of the book. :)

Any suggestion for a MP3 catalog software only. I loved 4-MP3. Small, with a amazing fast search engine e easy to use. But it's old now. http://www.free-press-release.com/news/200502/1109304675.html http://screenshots.en.softonic.com/en/scrn/9000/9499/3_4mp3_01.jpg

Interesting... but Egghub seems better to me. Just can't seem to find the time to catalogue my collections - and I'm a librarian ffs! :-)

  • dafunkk12

@dafunkk12: Oh, GuruLib is a web app, too. That's what I get for just going by a screenshot and not visiting the site.

  • dafunkk12

For those that like to live in the cloud, I recommend iTrackMine.com. It works fantastic with my USB CueCat scanner (which really just spits out text anyway).
