Gladinet Web Storage Manager Reaches Release Candidate

Windows: Gladinet, the desktop utility that mounts Google, Windows Live, and other web/cloud storage applications as locally backed-up folders, boasts about new stress-tested stability and compatability in its just-out release candidate download.

There’s not a lot of whole-cloth new features or support in this release candidate, but when it comes to backing up Google Docs, Picasa Web Albums, Windows Live SkyDrive files, Amazon S3, or other cloud storage services, knowing that you could leave Gladinet backing up overnight without crashing is, in itself, kind of an important feature. And with better support for SkyDrive’s free 25GB of storage space that landed between the first Gladinet beta we toured through and now, this Windows utility could be a whole lot more helpful.

Gladinet is a free download for Windows systems only.

    I've been using it as a mounted drive and doing a backup sysnc to my skydrive space. Works great. Looking forward to the RC!

    So does it take the files you have on your computer and back them up online, or does it take the files that are online and back them up onto your computer?

  • VayaConQueso

    I guess I don't understand

    1) Why I would give them my passwords, and

    2) How I could expect them to reliably store files on other corporations' services. Wouldn't your files be in jeopardy the moment the service decided to "break" gladinet?

    3) How they think they are going to provide a pay version of this service -- (unless they have negotiated deals with all of these storage providers?)

    @JCMasterpiece: Both, in a way. It simply "mounts" your web storage folders as if they were local--so you can trade files and and out.

    @nefnet13: Second that Live Mesh/Skydrive integration request. I was just wondering whether this app could make this possible. Maybe a SyncToy connection between the folder to be backed up and the mounted drive?

    Tried this one out the first time I saw it mentioned on this site; I wanted to use it specifically for mounting a disk for my Skydrive account.

    Took a lot of work to get to function at all (and even now I'm not sure how I finally got it going) but the frequent hangs and lockups on my XP machine made me uninstall with a longing look at what could have been.

    I honestly found it easier to use the drag & drop functionality in IE on Skydrive and that is saying something. As of now I don't really utilize the Skydrive space like I could and it's all because of the inability to get large groups of files uploaded easily. If only Live Mesh would hurry up and integrate with Skydrive...

    DropBox when you go with right mouse button on a file, you can copy the web link.
    I wanted to know if it was possible with this? ;)

    @Alessandro Romano: Ciao Alessandro, I don't know the answer but I think you haven't received a response as it wasn't very clear in English what you were writing. If you ask the question again, using 'from' rather than 'dall' maybe someone will respond.

  • Alessandro Romano

    you are so kind to be able to respond?

    I have been following Gladinet since it first mentioned in LifeHacker. The beta works but could be better. I found some more features in the release candidate such as the task manager to monitor the backup, the backup manager to do incremental backup are useful. Bandwidth control is also a nice addition. Now I can browse the web while uploading files or pause the upload.

    Not sure if LH has covered it or not, but Windows Live Mesh (mesh.com) does a similar thing. It's limited in storage (I think) but it's pretty great. You guys should do a post on it. The advantage to Mesh is that you can sync across the cloud and multiple computers (and platforms).

    @VayaConQueso:
    1) you don't give them your passwords. check the disclamer of sorts right on their front page, "The login credentials for cloud storages and services are stored in users local PC. Gladinet does not collect them..."

    2) your files would not be in jeopardy unless the actual storage service has an outage, goes under, explodes, etc... what is it that you think this program does?

    3) as far as their business model goes, it looks like they plan on offering three versions with progressively increasing functionality and maybe native storage.

    @nefnet13:

    I wish I could help you, as my install just 'worked'. I have it mapped to a Y: drive at work that mounts when I log on. My password program, eWallet, syncs itself up to Y:\ whenever I exit it. When I log in at home, eWallet syncs itself back up to skydrive via gladinet and I get whatever changes I made get brought back down. The only glitch is when gladinet loads at work, sometimes it leaves a ghost tab in my task bar. Right clicking on the icon in systray, selecting help, then exiting would make the ghost tab go away. But functionally it worked great for me.

    @nefnet13: Geez, I'm such a dope. I use Firefox so religiously that I had never tried Skydrive in IE. Thanks for the head's up. It works great that way. Of course, I still hate Microsoft for designing the site around their filthy browser, but I'm not above using the vastly superior drag-and-drop uploading.

    For the love of god man, turn on Cleartype before you take a screenshot.

  • Daniel_IT

    @ArmandoVespa: WLMesh seems a fine service.
    But I seem gladinet is different beacuse you my enter in your storage and services, is not a service. And you may use more than a service.
