Firefox Mobile (Fennec) Alpha Up For Windows Mobile Testing

Windows Mobile 6: Fennec, Firefox’s mobile browser, inches closer to a widespread beta with the release of an alpha tested on an HTC Touch Pro, but available for download on any Windows Mobile 6 device.

We’ve previously seen a “milestone release” of Fennec for the Touch Pro and select Nokia devices, but this alpha includes much more of what someone would actually want out of a mobile Firefox—namely, add-on support, much better memory management, and a CSS-based interface that allows for wider compatability.

Check out the video walk-through below for a look at what’s specific to this WinMo alpha, but head back and peek at the Nokia-only beta for a broader look at what Firefox wants to do on your phone.

Fennec Alpha 1 for Windows Mobile is a free download. Detailed installation instructions are available at the Fennec wiki page.

That's pretty quaint that their logo is a hand and finger and they have to use a stylus.

I agree with the lag issues now (still Alpha) but I have Skyfire on my HTC Touch Pro & I doubt that in the near future any mobile browser will compete with that IMO

@motang: I really hope so. Steel has been filling the gap nicely though.

I played with it a few days ago, and it is interesting. While very slow (known issue, this is still ALPHA people), it has a lot of potential!
I'm glad to see the browser wars are alive and well on Windows Mobile.
Until Fennec gets to a usable state, I'll stick with trusty ole Opera Mobile, but I do look forward to see what Fennec and the Mozilla team has to offer! It's going to be stiff competition with Opera Mobile 9.7 Beta around the corner featuring Opera Turbo.

I'd like a version for jailbroken iPhones...

That looks good, but very very laggy :(

Fennec seems to be shaping up well, is there going to be a version of it for the Android?

I tried this on my xv6800, and it dragged so bad. I was turned off shortly after.

I run it on my Nokia n810 but it doesn't beat out the default browser quite yet. (I think it's an Opera browser?)

    Hope they optimize it more.

@achoke: I have a WM6.5 rom on my XV6800 and it won't run, just crashes. I did get the menu bar and a seriously squashed screen once, oh well.

Does anyone know: will the alpha work on non-touchscreen phones?

  • Clifton Tarpy

    Try it in Ubuntu:

    sudo apt-get install fennec

I think I prefer the existing Opera browser on my TouchPro. It's pretty nifty already.. should be all you need.

@GldRush98: Yah, or just use Skyfire FTW :D
