Edgeless Enables Mouse Cursor Wrap Around

Windows only: If you’re sporting a wide screen monitor or dual monitors, Edgeless wraps your mouse cursor around one far edge to the other saving you the long haul through the middle.

Edgeless is a simple and portable application. You do have to install it to extract the executable but after that you can just copy it out of the installation directory. As far as input is concerned you simply tell it whether you want it to wrap horizontally, vertically, or both. From then on when you push the mouse cursor against the edges of the monitor Edgeless will jump the cursor to the opposite edge effectively wrapping it around the monitor. Unfortunately Edgeless only works on single and dual monitor setups; for testing we had to disable the third monitor to get it to work. For another multi-monitor friendly application that will cut down on the time you spend mousing about check out Multi-Monitor Mouse. Edgeless is freeware, Windows only.

@ShrivalliGadha: Excellent suggestion! I just did that since I've used Synergy in the past (also because the link to Edgeless is blocked for me). Thanks!

For any Mac users out there: [www.digicowsoftware.com] - WrapAround. Same thing. Wraparound also allows you to designate dead zones for your hot corners so they will still work while it is running.

I wonder if there is a linux alternative to this. It would interfere with having multiple workspaces though. Multiple workspaces make me so much more productive that I could never only have one again.

@Phoshi: Razer mice are great for this since they have buttons on the mouse itself for raising/lowering sensitivity.

This kind of breaks the usefulness of magic corners. At the same time, not being compatible with 3+ monitors makes it totally useless for me.

  • envador

@Jason Fitzpatrick: Edgeless can be configured to not wrap vertically. This way you can still save the widescreen horizontal returning while just dealing with the up and down direction your normal way.

@Jason C: UPDATE: Shuffle the monitors right-to-left once, then it works fine.

@Wayne Elgin: I am curious as to how you accomplished this. I use Synergy to share a keyboard between a MBP and a Dell Laptop, each with an additional monitor hooked up. 4 screens is a lot to traverse and I am always looking for a faster way.

I have found that if you are running dual monitors, horizontal works only if the secondary monitor is on the right. :(

This tool will cause way more problems than it fixes. It breaks fitt's law for computer interaction. For example, think of the start button - you just move your mouse all the way to the bottom left corner without ever really thinking about it. You can't go past the start button because the GUI has given you boundaries. Now imagine no barriers - you'll never reach the Start button as fast ever again. Remember how much harder it was to reach the start button in Windows 95 because there was a 1 pixel margin around it? That's why on Macs, the menu for any app is always flushed with the top of the monitor - target acquisition for any menu tab is much easier.

So....you suck and should have been burned in a fire?

  • Wayne Elgin

@sunken: Yes, you can. At work, I have a 30 inch + a laptop, which I run through Synergy to share the mouse and keyboard.

When I added a second monitor in addition to my 30 inch for a project, I ran into some problems because Windows prefers for the primary monitor to be the left-most monitor, IIRC. And Synergy cannot treat the additional monitor as another machine, therefore the physical layout didn't match the Synergy layout until I set Synergy to loop back to the other edge. Not only did it save me time traversing all three of the monitors, but it was a nice workaround to the limitations of Windows and Synergy.

  • Jacob Kuehndorf

Am I the only one missing the Wrap option. Because i wanted vertical not horizontal and both are on by default.

I think you can simulate this with synergy by defining the screen to be left or right of itself.

  • Donkey_Pasta

@TheOtherHalf: I am also in the thumb trackball club -- with a 4 monitor setup -- works like a charm.

I use a thumb trackball.. one flick, and I'm there. I'm like Jumper with the mouse

The problem with this is the "infinite edges" being lost. Like, if your mouse to go to the start menu on the bottom-left, you can just move your pointer infinitely bottom-left and you'll hit it. With this the "wall" disappears, and now you have to be more exact in your positioning, even if it's a shorter trip. Usually ends up taking longer to exact-position than to infinite-edge.

  • thecodingeye

If you use UltraMon you can set the middle button on the mouse to move the mouse to different monitors. With a dual monitor setup I have found this handy. However, with a single monitor setup it would not do much good.

  • singularity0821

To install it in Windows 7 use Vista compatibility mode. But Edgeless and Aero Snap don't seem to get along...

  • ShrivalliGadha

You can accomplish the same thing with Synergy by setting up your computer as its own neighbor, either vertically or horizontally, as well as its normal awesome functions.

@Charles McPhate: One thing that is definitely confusing is that the program removes boundaries you're used to. For example if you whip the mouse towards your task bar with the expectation that the cursor will stop on the desk bar... it just cruises right on through and back to the top of the screen.

  • Charles McPhate

I've used something like this before (don't remember the name of the program, it's been years), but quickly scrapped it -- it just confused me too much. Guess I'm used to the back-and-forth. Besides, I use a trackball now, which makes it easy to zip across the screen.

Now, if someone could develop a way for the cursor to follow my eyes...

  • Phoshi

@Phoshi: Addendum: While the software works :perfectly: vertically, the horizontal component (IE: The good bit) failed to work. Vista HP32, dual monitors configured 2:1 running at the same resolution.

    Sad face.

  • Phoshi

My 'solution' for this was to simply ramp my mouse sensitivity up to max. Highly reccomended for those with large resolutions, but don't do it all in one go. I went up a point a day and didn't notice any loss of accuracy.

Regardless, I'll give this a shot, it could be useful.

  • frak

Well, this seems useful. Though, I've never had much trouble just pitching my mouse left/right. Only thing I've ever disturbed was a stack of CD/DVDs from a hard pitch.

The problem of such tool is that it actually makes you slower, if you still rely on scrollbar or dock anything on the left and right edge of the screen. You will lose two very precious screen real estate, governed by Fitt's Law. Basically, you cant push your mouse all the way to the left or right and think you are on top of your sidebars, because you will push it over.

  • bmh

@Phoshi: I agree with the higher-resolution, though I always use the "trial by fire" method of starting at the highest and forcing myself to learn.
Same thing with console video game settings -- now I can almost never get one that's sensitive enough.

  • taodude

@Brock Sutton: Yeah, it does have that tiny little problem. Open your Control Panel, select and "Mouse". Under the Pointers tab, click "Use Default", if you can, otherwise click "Browse" and pick any pointer, then go back and click "Use Default", then "Apply". Or just pick a theme.

@planetarian: So do higher-end logitechs. When I had my G7, I used to use all three settings, lowest for fine Photoshop work, middle for most stuff, and highest for twitch-speed games.

  • Brock Sutton

EnorMouse is a great prank. It even pranks you when you choose to exit from it. It turns your cursor into a single pixel instead of the enormous one. In fact, I'm not sure how to fix it.

    Brock Sutton

  • taodude

Neat, but it would be nice to have a selectable delay at the edge of the screen. The way it is now, you've got to move carefully if you've set your taskbar/quicklaunch to autohide. For now, anyway, Synergy works better for me.

For anyone who hates/distrusts installers as much as I do, here's how to get the Edgeless2 files without installation:
Double-click the installer. When the copyright screen comes up (with the "Next" and "Back" buttons), just leave it alone. Open your file manager of choice and navigate to your temp directory (location may vary from one PC to the next). Look for the "SETUP_nnnnn" directory (where "nnnnn" is a 5-digit number) that the installer just created. Go into it and copy "00001#Edgeless.exe" and, optionally, "00000#Edgeless Help.chm" to a safe place. Those two files - which you can rename to suit taste - are all you need; the other files are used by the installer. Go back to the installer and cancel the installation.

This tactic works on many installer-based apps - handy for those times Universal Unextractor doesn't work.

(BTW: EnorMouse, also available at the linked site, is going into the pranks folder on my USB key!)

It was called Plugin. Pretty neat program, it let you combine program groups and make a right-click menu. In Windows 3.11. The Win95 version wasn't as useful. I've always missed having the cursor wrapping "behind the monitor" to the other edge. I downloaded the original Edgeless. Works just fine. So far... it's been 15 minutes. paul

Didn't work for my pc. Vista 64bit. Would only wrap vertically on my main screen not my second. :(

It's like upgrading your monitor from Snake 1 to Snake 2!
