All-Glass Firefox Enables Slick Transparency Effects
Windows only: All-Glass Firefox v2 extends the super-slick Windows Vista Aero transparency effects to almost every piece of the Firefox interface.
After installing the add-on and restarting your browser, you’ll be greeted with shiny new transparency effects similar to the Aero Geek Firefox customisation, but covering the entire window chrome. The similarity is no accident—All-Glass Firefox is based on the same Glasser extension that we used in the previous customisation, but takes it a step further, even adding fancy text effects if you are running the latest beta of Firefox.
All-Glass Firefox is a free download, requires Firefox on Windows 7 or Vista. For more, check out the Aero Geek Firefox customisation for a productive browser with slick transparency effects.

Does it have options for switching between this blue glass and other colors of glass? I would love a transparent black glass look like I have with all my other Vista windows and bars.
whiteflea
Doesn't work properly on mine.
Windows 7 RC1 x64, Firefox 3.0.1.0, default FF theme
Menu bar, toolbars, and bookmarks bar are all solid black. Gmail Manager text in status bar is invisible.
@mawcs: I agree, if the tabs stayed shaded it would be easier to use. Otherwise it's kinda neat.
I, by far, prefer the Glasser add-on, because it's nice being able to read the tab text.
FamiCube64
why do i still subscribe to lifehacker? this stuff is terrible.

32bit Win 7, FF 3.0.10... looks all messed up with black bars. Uninstalled.
@d★nger the pirate:
To embed pictures, I think you need to start the img tag but not close it.
An improvement upon Glasser, but still too many fixes needed for me to use it. Any items from other extensions in the toolbars/status bar are either too dark to read or are simply not visible. Still, getting closer! Here's to native support in 4.0.
tobz1000
It doesn't work with the Web Developer toolbar, so you'll have to uninstall the toolbar for this to work. ;)

@Phoshi: Hey, some of us hace ditched the default xp look years ago! I for one would welcome the chance for a see through ff.
Archnemesis_Goldenhair
Works fine under Vista SP1. Nice job!
UriahMalkoth
@shadoblak: Actually the menu bar is only transparent when the tab bar is active. Weird
shadoblak
Doesn't work in W7U 64 bit. My LavaFox is way more beautiful than this anyway.
JudyComaetho
@shadoblak: It didn't install right I think because my whole interface, except dropdown menu's are transparent.

@drdiesel: "All-Glass Firefox is a free download, requires Firefox on Windows 7 or Vista."
I'm not entirely sure what you want from them, a huge flashing sign?
@jameskb101: ...I bow to your... "superior ability to ignore words"
Too bad it doesnt work with x64 :(
It says right on the install page it does not work for x64 - so maybe that is the cause of it not working properly for some people (me included)
jonnypage
Uninstalled. A note about "Windows Vista or 7" would be really nice. Even with the Beta 4 install of FF3.5 it won't work properly under XP.
drdiesel
Well, the idea is great. But it killed my favorite theme. It became unreadable, I'm assuming, due to the text effect, which I find to look green-ish or something. It's just off or something. Bummer because I really like the glass look.
@jameskb101: It extends Vista/Win 7's aero. Why would you expect it to run on XP?
ssj4Gogeta
Doesn't work on 64 bit Vista.
Its not supposed to work on Windows XP. Did you read the article or extension requirements?
SonaChicken
@d★nger the pirate: It may not be for you, but with a non-distracting desktop background, this just makes the interface seem an awful lot cleaner and less distracting.
@jameskb101: Well yeah it would; you don't have Aero. ._.;
tatsuyame
@SRWare Iron fork regularly, but until Chromium gets -real- extension support (mainly for NoScript, since Iron already has an adblock.ini and I use an adblocking hosts file to boot), I'm using Firefox as my primary browser.
Yeah so, the top is glass, the bottom is glass but the navigation and tab bars are black, not glass.....But it looks awesome, so kept
shadoblak
I like the way your favicons are sitting up next to the address bar. Can you tell me how to move them there? As I have quite a few favicons, I'd be interested in decreasing the gap between them, even if they stay under the address bar. Any idea on that? Yours look way closer than mine.
NashCalvus
Horrible. Didn't work for me on xp sp3. Looks awful. Uninstalled.
jameskb101
@Matt Hopton: I didn't like Chrome. It just...felt weird. Much like Opera does. I cannot stand using Opera, something about it is just off. And Chrome wouldn't maximize correctly on my computer :/
tatsuyame
Works for me, FF 3.0.10 on Win 7, looks good but tab titles are hard to read.
JarrodJohnson
All-Glass Firefox overdoes the transparency, but Glasser looks just fine for me. It's always bugged me how dumb Vista's weird blue-white gradient looked on firefox.
Karl He
Not working for me. Just makes like the title area glassy. Horrific.
@OneTrickPony: I love the technology, compositing one's windows, allowing for performance-hit-free shadows, and no window tearing, is fantastic, and something windows has needed for a long while. The theme? eugh. Change it straight away!
@d★nger the pirate: Looks like you need to run Google Chrome! Much quicker than FF on most PCs, more secure and looks better too!
I should probably add some citations there - but it's late and I'm tired.
Matt Hopton
Installed it, made the bowser full screen, deleted it.
It's aweful.
Maybe I'm alone in this, but I really don't like Vista Aero.
I think I mastered Piagetian object permanence somewhere back in toddlerhood--I don't need my user interface to remind me that there's STUFF HIDING behind each window.
@d★nger the pirate: Mine is similar, but I've set up keyword bookmarks to get rid of the searchbar, and my bookmarks toolbar is autohide, thanks to stylish.
For some reason I can't get it to work, only the very top and bottom part appear trabsparent. It might have to do with Vista SP2 I just installed.
bradL
@egoods: There are some fantastic themes for OS X which "extend" the chrome. It's only Vista that needs this, seeing as it's windows are transparent and you can see what's below.
adding more distracting crap to firefox. perfect. i prefer it slimmed down and as dark as possible: example.
side note: how do we embed pictures? i can never get it to work.
@izym: That is indeed what I meant. I mean, look at chrome, it looks awful on XP.
For those having issues with the addon, read the thread on the forums for various fixes and issues some users are having.
Sean McCoy
The text effect is horrible otherwise it's nice, is there anyway to disable the text effect but still use the addon? Running 3.5 beta on windows 7 btw
Alexander Hultner
@apollo89: I believe what he meant was that it would look silly to extend XP's default chrome, which is blue.
Man, I tried to do this exact same thing YEARS ago with Opera but never got it to work.
There's no Mac version of this? awww
@Phoshi: It didn't extend the blue, it extended the glass effect of aero. the background happens to be blue.
apollo89
@Runnin-Ute: How would it help on XP? It'd look silly to extend the blue, and a normal theme could do that anyway.
to bad you have to be running Vista or Win 7 to use this. That would be real nice if you could use it with XP.
Runnin-Ute
Does not work correctly for me in Windows 7.
I have a rotating background image. This plugin doesn't "fog" the text correctly and sometimes you can't read the tab names and menus depending on the background color.
Oh snap! The guy who made this got the idea from what I made as a mod for the nasa night launch theme, although I've since switched back to XP, so I don't use it anymore...
Here's where I first released it to the public:
[forums.mozillazine.org]
[userstyles.org]
Ambroos' original version, which contain links to me!:
[userstyles.org]
Pretty sweet, huh?
I think it doesn't look good when tabbar or statusbar are transparent, but standart glasser's a need on 7 or vista.
BTW, what about "bookmarks bar on new tab" thing (like chrome) on firefox? I'm waiting for that style or extension.
balcis
@Samutz: It says that it's not compatible with x64. That's probably why it doesn't work properly in Windows 7 RC1 x64.
@d★nger the pirate: I think you've illustrated very clearly here why so many of us use Firefox. Because you can customize it to your needs, streamline it for you, and make it look how you want.
This really shouldn't have turned into an argument of right and wrong. It's about personal preference. Some users may prefer Aero transparency effects. Others may not. But the choice has been left in every individual's hands, and that's something that Firefox does better than Chrome, Safari, IE, and Opera. So smile, nobody needs to get upset about another option, whether they want to use it or not. We can all be happy with our own respective customizations of this browser.
This is far too much then is needed, imo. I prefer Glasser.
I still prefer glasser in combination with:

@drdiesel: You know actually reading things might help you out in the future. Just an FYI, the red signs you see while you're driving have "Stop" written on them, it may be important.
jeremy_mccurdy
@jeremy_mccurdy: i can see how some would see it as crowded, but i like it. everything is out of the way and i know where it is.
@jameskb101: If only there was a way to give a person a dunce cap on the internet...
HAY! You know what? It doesn't work on Mac or Linux either, go figure!
jeremy_mccurdy
I heart transparency - I'm totally installing this tonight!
I @mawcs: Try the "glasser" Firefox extension instead. Not as glassy but it works much better.
JerryA
Is there something like this for Linux? I'm running Compiz, so it'd be theoretically possible...
HeartBurnKid: Agent of R.O.A.C.H.
@Nabeel: oooh, youre right. at least thats what it used to be. test:
Fail...
@d★nger the pirate: See, your example is far more distracting to me, all those favicons make it look like a confusing mess.
jeremy_mccurdy
@lclock makes my clock a little nicer. its just that in win7 they have such nice default backgrounds, i cant help but use them. it would be nice if you could disable transparency for certain programs. or can you?
@theme im using.
Installed it. Looked bad until I changed my theme to the default. Now the only problem is my Google Bar is the only thing that is NOT translucent---looks a bit weird.
Eric Schauberger
One valid point worth clearing first: this extension doesn't work with Gmail Notifier Extension, the author suggest Gmail Checker instead
LuluMockingbird
@stephenjamesgalbincea: its fine for me on Firefox 3.0.10 with 7 RC...
Rooster212
Like others have said, I prefer the Glasser extension over this one.

(as Judy wrote but the discussion disappeared)
talking about glassy effects the LavaFox theme is much better ! [addons.mozilla.org]

Looks like Vista SP2 kills this in full screen unless there's something else that I have running that borked it between SP's.
Darkest Daze
Gave it a go in Windows 7, it works fine for me, but I generally have my theme set up so the windows are barely transparent. Things would probably be impossible to read if I set the transparency up more. As it stands though, it matches in really well with everything.
jeremy_mccurdy
I have 3.0.1 and Windows 7 installed and it works fine for me. The only tab that is transparent is the active one, and it's cloudy enough that the text is readable even with a rotating background. The only things not transparent are my google and stumbleupon toolbars.
aet
@mawcs: if you are running stylish you could probably find a style that makes the text all black.
Evan Sangetta
@dantheman12: Nasa Night Launch, check my above post, it has a way to make it look sweet with this same thing
what is a nice, dark ff theme?

This is really nice. I've always wanted Firefox to blend in with Vista/7 more seamlessly, and this does it. For not being compatible with 64 bit systems, it works great on my Windows 7 x64 machine.
bunky
@d★nger the pirate: I find it amusing that you are so ready to criticise the FF setup that Lifehacker presents but deflect criticism about your setup.
I dig it, looks nice in windows 7
