Absolutely Amazing Video Game Remake Wallpapers, Take Two
Lifehacker reader Orioto stunned us a few months ago with his gorgeous paintings of classic video games for your desktop—and he’s at it again with another must-see collection for your eye-candy needs.
His work is based on his idea of what high-definition versions of classic video games would look like if they could be rendered on modern gaming systems—and we can only hope a video game designer is paying attention. Click each image to download the full version, or hit the link at the bottom for the full gallery.
All of the images are freely downloadable with high-resolution versions from the DeviantArt gallery—including the last set of amazing wallpapers we featured a few months ago. For even more geeky fun, check out another killer retro wallpaper collection. Thanks, Orioto!

I've had his RSS feed bookmarked since the last time he was mentioned. Love these!
Platypus Man
I would love to play these versions.
Just realized the 2nd to last is FFVI. Man that would be goooorgeous to have that game in that style.
Considering how Street Fighter 4 came out with the whole 2.5d concept, I really want to see Donkey Kong like it. How long has it been since there was DK title?
tok3n ninja; fell out of the ceiling
@ljbisbee: Me too.

This is full of win and awesome. Thanks!
@sandmanfvrreturns: I was just thinking the same thing, I've been playing the game for the first time (i know right!!! >_<) but man I would just love an awesome chrono trigger wallpaper.
bharatpatel89
very nice stuff, man with Nintendo would hire the guys to do a new 2D version of one of the games....2D mario looking like that...wowza
grimdeath9740
@Sentouki: Thank you!
Kasuli
@ridgecity: Hit "dwonload" on the left
@Phoshi: My favorite FF
@arienh4: where?? I don't see big images...
ridgecity
You know what's sad? Nintendo would never to a remake like that. My god I hate they are so lazy.
ridgecity
These are awesome, I still am using the Gunstar Heroes one he made for my ps3's theme background. Awesome stuff, keep it up Orioto!

@sandmanfvrreturns: after playing chrono cross i could never go back to trigger... The fate boss fight rocked my world
@armchairnixon:
Yes I think it is. Take a look at the description on DeviantArt.
Isaacquartz
Just great. Used my favorite ones to slideshow as wallpapers in my brand new Win7 install. Thanks again.

@The How-To Geek: I remember about 2, maybe 3. I remember that crono died and there was a tree, then there was another I THINK and I can't remember it, but then I found the one with the devs.
sandmanfvrreturns
@sandmanfvrreturns: I would absolutely love a Chrono Trigger wallpaper, especially if it is of either one of the epic battles, or Epoch traveling through time.
@The How-To Geek: All of them :-D
LOL! They remind me of box art from back in the day.
So far away from what the actual game play looks like.
ssoltero
@Kasuli: They're 4800*2700. Not hard to downscale...
I think its hilarious that Echo the Dolphin got a nod.
F'n amazing!
bufftbone
Kid Icarus. Spent a lot of hours on that one.
eternaluxe
@The How-To Geek: Just the one, for me. I'm awful at replaying RPGs, but I'll play it again one day, when I've forgotten the specifics again.
@slim934: I love that game.
@z_bad_magic: With FF, technical is a synonym for screwing up the number system so bad your mind explodes.
Also on a video game tip, see many 8-bit and 16-bit refs here: [vimeo.com]
And the Turrican nod made me think of Lemmings, another great Amiga classic.
Nice collection, thanks a lot!
I would LOVE to see a Turrican one! :)
That would make my year :D
On the Sonic wallpaper, is that supposed to be Stardust Speedway from Sonic CD? It's got a similar look to it and it's got the race against Metal Sonic that happened in the last zone of Stardust Speedway.
If so, that's awesome.

Spaaaaaace Motherfucking Megaforce!!(presented by ToHo)

Dude has some sick skills.
Angry Numismatist
I've been using the Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past wallpaper for a while now. It's amazing work.
My problem is that I never see more than two inches of desktop, since I always have apps open. Always.
Martin Clifford
Any Way we can get these all zipped up in a nice package?
Meetloaf13
I've been following this guy since they did a thing on him in Nintendo Power. I'm using most of those in my Win7 rotation
@Shawnladd: Final Fantasy 3 opening scene. FFVI if you want to get technical.
z_bad_magic
@Shawnladd: Final Fantasy 6
kinganad
Why can't they be in 1920x1200? WHY?!
Kasuli
These are gorgeous. It took me a couple seconds to recognize the Lemmings one, but it is now my favorite.
@Shawnladd: whoops nevermind
@Shawnladd: Kid Icarus
Been using the Sonic one at work for a couple weeks now. UltraMon scales it up pretty nice across all three displays, though Mecha Sonic gets cut off. It still looks damn sweet.
nice ecco dolphin
jslizzle
@sandmanfvrreturns: Definitely one of the best games of all time. How many endings did you beat?
These are getting better each time, but I want a Chrono Trigger one. Then, I will have a geekgasm. heh
sandmanfvrreturns
The game is Final Fantasy 6.
The introduction part when they are in the mobile armor.
slim934
What game is underneath Sonic?
Shawnladd
These will go perfect as a changing wallpaper set on win 7
MJDeviant
Lemmings wallpaper is win!
that DKC one looks like it could be a actual screenshot from a remake
@Kasuli: yeah, I missed that at first too. thanks Sentouki. I saw the 1280*720 size and thought that was it.
FrancesTheMute
So amazing!!
I love the Sonic one!
jimmie48
Mario and FF6 are to be expected. I am absolutely floored to see Kid Icarus. I just thought I was the only one that waisted their youth on it. I got to say I am inspired to build a new desktop around that one when I get another day off.
Also I just know my gf is going to love the Echo dolphin one.
socialpanic
Those are some really awesome wallpapers.
motang
@armchairnixon: No, it definitely is the Stardust Speedway from Sonic CD. Probably the best Sonic game their ever was!
Odiase
gorgeous!
nka
@CoffeyWasHere:
aka Super Aleste! A kind of anti-manic shooter, but packed with great ideas, great music and impressive technical feats.
RicoTheSaboteur
Man, seeing that Donkey Kong wallpaper makes me wish that something like actually existed.
ZafirSanta
"These will go perfect as a changing wallpaper set on win 7"
My thoughts exactly=)

Guy has talent. And he's working on a Metroid scene next!

I'll take a shot in the dark and say that's Final Fantasy III.
MargueriteGautam
Nice!!
I like the blue sea and dolphins.
Who vote for the same choice? :)
Doom!

Oh... WOW. These are BEAUTIFUL. I can't help but imagine how outstanding the sales on these games would be if they were re-releaesed with these kinds of graphics. Kudos to you man, really.
Omrikon
@tok3n ninja; fell out of the ceiling: Donkey Kong Jungle Beat came out a couple months ago.
ridgecity
These aren't pictures, they are screen shots from the new nintendo system being anounced at E3! lol jk... ...but what if.... lol
Wow! He must really be good.
programmer780
@SurinaCorvus: Agreed. Sonic CD was fantastic. I've still got the soundtrack in my music collection. =)
that's... distracting. need to take a look at what I can do with these before I get hooked on them.
cathos
1280x720 is a "wallpaper" now? Some people have more than a bottom-of-the-barrel 15-inch laptop..
Schmeg Peg
@Schamael: Turrican, Lotus 2, Walker & Superfrog and I'm in heaven.
mr_cookies
It's one of the Final Fantasy games. IV or VI... I think IV.
ValterBattus
@Isaacquartz: Oh my god, it is Stardust Speedway. That's fuggin' amazing.
armchairnixon
Space Megaforce?! (The one under Donkey Kong) I love that game but thought it was way too obscure to merit attention. Kudos!
LiaCabbash
Really Nice
Cjordan
Wow - really REALLY well done.
Unbelieveable !
@tok3n ninja; fell out of the ceiling: And it's a remake from the 2005 version. Can't count that as new.
tok3n ninja; fell out of the ceiling
@ridgecity: The drum concept is stupid.
tok3n ninja; fell out of the ceiling
It strikes me that these are all primarily from Nintendo and Sega based consoles. Certain PC classics have been omited thus far.
