Zamzar Now Converts Text To Speech
You need a quick text to speech conversion but you’re lacking the software to do so. No worries, Zamzar—the handy online file conversion tool—has added text to speech conversion.
We’ve covered Zamzar before for its handy file conversions, including the recent addition of a power point to image conversion. The newest trick in the Zamzar conversion bag is the ability to turn TXT, PDF, Word, Works, WordPerfect and OpenOffice document files into speech. You won’t get back a silky smooth reading of the text presented by a professional actor, but it will sound better than a robot. If you don’t need text to speech, Zamzar has a host of other conversion options like turning your Word document into a PDF among dozens of other combinations. The service at Zamzar is free, with a 100MB file size limit—which shouldn’t pose much of a problem with text files.

This is rather interesting, though this capability is already built into OS X, so it's useless for me.

Apparently it's very buggy. I tried converting a text file with the following text.
Braid - March 31st
The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena - April 7th
The Godfather II - April 7th
And I got the following e-mail around 20 minutes later.

@dragonskin: your list of pirated blu-ray discs to download?

Good! Now what I need is the other way around: speech to text. Perhaps something that can monitor one of my mailboxes where I have my voicemails forwarded so that it can transcribe them for me and I can read them on my cell. It should also be possibly free (I don't mind a few ads). This will bypass the obscene pricing that cell phone carriers charge for the same transcription service.

I was just excited to convert a publisher file to pdf and I received the same error. Its too bad to, had the service worked properly the first time, I would have remembered them forever, but now I will forget about them within the next day.

Wow thanks for this. Don't need the text to speech, but I have been looking for a way to convert publisher files to pdf. This just saved me a lot of trouble!
