Windows Fonts Explorer Displays And Manages Your Windows Fonts
Windows only: Windows Fonts Explorer is a lightweight application for rapidly comparing blocks of text in various fonts and loading new fonts into your system.
While it’s not a replacement for the now-defunct Adobe Type Manager, Windows Fonts Explorer is a great way to rapidly cruise through your fonts. You can enter a block of text, apply formatting like underlining or italicising and then use the arrow keys to quickly compare how your sample text looks in different fonts. Windows Font Explorer is freeware, Windows only.

Whilst this application looks pretty good, I'm always wary of installing new fonts as older versions of Windows used to slow down to a crawl (especially when booting up) if there were lots of fonts.
As such, I've ended up avoiding installing new fonts unless absolutely necessary and tended to stick to the stock ones.
Has this now changed?

There is NexusFont and then there is everything else...

Nexus Font is really great!
Haven't tried this one yet, but I did try a lot others. The best one in my opinion is Font Fitting Room ([www.apolisoft.com]) by Apolisoft. Fast proggie, nice GUI, Font Sets ..

@mrsilver: I know this was true of XP, havn't had tested it in Vista/7 yet.

Don't forget about NexusFont! It has lots of tools built in, a pretty GUI, and is also a lightweight program, sizically speaking.
Really, check it out!

I accidentally uninstalled a font that I was using for certain word documents. Of course I reinstalled it just fine - but now all my previously saved documents are still switched to a different font. Is there any cure for this mess other than restoring from backup or changing each document manually?

Can we get a Hive Five on best font managers at some point?

@jsmorley: I'm pretty happy with NexusFont as well, and I've tried MANY in the past. It's missing a few features, but nothing I can't live without for the fantastic price of FREE.

@OraAsellio: Yup, I would like to see a Hive Five of best font managers as well.

Another +1 for NexusFont.
If you can't compare your text in several fonts on a single screen (which judging from the screenshot you can't ... correct me if I'm wrong), then it's a big fail for a font-explorer-type program.

Does anyone have issues with an extraordinary number of Asian fonts clogging their font folder? I know I did not ask to have them installed, nor did I voluntarily allow them to be installed. A font manager would be great!

Personally, I'm still hoping for a full version of FontManager X. There was a beta, but it's been taken down - and that beta still kicks the ass of every free or non-free font manager I've yet to come across.

This looks good, but I'm a big fan of AMP FontViewer http://www.ampsoft.net/utilities/FontViewer.php Its the only font utility I use ever since it was featured on lifehacker a couple of months back: http://lifehacker.com/5155128/amp-font-viewer-previews-categorizes-and...

@~dt~: nexus is damn ugly, but it's the best there is.
