The Well-Appointed Home Office

Many of our featured offices are heavy on workstation design, but light on attention paid to the rest of the office. Today we’ll be visiting a well appointed home office with design flair to spare.

Lifehacker reader LaWatusi recently remodelled her home office and did quite a job of it. She repainted the walls and reupholstered to bring new colours into her workspace. The walls received additional treatment with new artwork and shelving and her actual workspace got a solid cleaning and reorganisation. There is a space for everything thanks to a paper organiser and carefully placed shelving and even enough room left over for some air-cleansing plants. We definitely award her extra style points for finding a balance between the the warmth of having personal items and the desire to have a neat and clutter-free workspace. I don't know which I hate more, the draperies or the light fixtures. Looks like a fear and loathing in a bad Vegas acid trip if you ask me.

This is a breath of fresh air compared to the rest of the workspaces.

In my opinion, the 'clutter' mentioned by other commenters can be alleviated if the photos are shot in wide angle. I believe it's not cluttered in person.

  • Anna McGlamry

It's way too cluttered and busy. I'd get a headache just sitting in there with that many prints. I do like the wall color, though.

    Anna McGlamry

  • BrettKS

Seems a little too cluttered for my likings.

  • fjpoblam

Well, I DO have to admit, there's something to be said, for the comfortable feeling of the picture, compared to the stark few scenes we've had in the past couple or so.

  • SamuelFox

Am I the only one who wants to see what these workspaces look like in 6 months?

    SamuelFox

  • Ajh

That's just lovely. While I'm not a fan of the patterns used, the entire place looks just so livable.

    Ajh

  • Er3s

I'm sorry, but that room is way too busy. I like simplicity in my workspace. I was looking for the cat too... lol.

@DogHead: Oh good Lord, not a woman wanting her home office to be feminine! What *is* this world coming to, where people decorate their offices to reflect the lifestyles they enjoy or (as you seem to suspect) would like to, all willy-nilly?

    Don't be a dick.

    mgpcoe

  • DogHead

Way too feminine; it screams "I sure am a posh modern busywoman, aren't I?"

It's really not that cluttered, it just looks that way because of the godawful busy, mishmash of vibrating patterns.

  • Jwhite1979

I like the colors, but the prints have got to be toned down.

    Jwhite1979

  • Zuzax

This home office actually looks like someone works here, and just straightened up for a few pictures and then went back to work.

Enough with the DJ command centers and found-garbage mash-up desks from previous episodes.

  • VayaConQueso

Lime and zebra prints are magazine-worthy?

    VayaConQueso

  • Hollasa

LaWatusi, admit it, you want to change your username to PoshModernBusywoman now, don't you? ;)

I love it - I wouldn't want it exactly like that for myself, but I love that room. Wonderful work!

  • LaWatusi

@DogHead: "posh modern busywoman" is certainly not a word my friends would use to describe me! I enjoy drinking beer, scratching my butt, live & loud punk rock, and I'm covered in a fair share of tattoos. I do however, clean up pretty well when I have to meet with clients. ;)

Personally, I love bold patterns, which I understand are far too busy for some. I kept the palette primarily black and white because I work with color all day and (for me) this space creates a neutral backdrop while I work.

Thanks to everyone for the positive AND negative comments. I appreciate the feedback!

@limbikity: I have a USB TV tuner stick connected to my computer, and a Media Center remote w/IR blaster on the cable box. I use my computer as a DVR and sometimes watch movies on my 24" HD widescreen 1080p monitor.

  • phoenix

@SamuelFox: Given some of the effort put into these, I imagine it wouldn't look much different.

  • teqz

Sofa in workplace would have me napping all day. Hmmm, sounds like a good idea. @robogobo:

  • limbikity

anyone else see a cable box in the first photo, but no tv?

    limbikity

  • ClintonOddfellow

    @robogobo:

Presumably the office also functions as a guest bedroom when the occupant has guests over, so the futon is appropriate. I tend to see quite a few home offices (mine included) with futons in them to accomidate overnight guests.

  • J_Frank_Parnell

I guess it's stylish, but staring at grey walls all day would make me want to hang myself with those horrid drapes after about a week. It's just...depressing.

  • robogobo

comfy sofa in workspace= bad idea

I'd be making video calls with bedhead all day long.

    robogobo

  • Zuzax

@DogHead: Based off of the initial description, I'd venture that there's a pretty good chance that the owner really is a "posh modern busywoman."

  • boomerz00

I love the colors. This looks like a place real work actually gets done. The others do have less "clutter" but are too sparse and uncomfortable this one looks like you can actually lounge and feel comfy while working.

    @MuglyTheWorm: It's a date!

    LaWatusi

  • MuglyTheWorm

@LaWatusi: if you're ever in ohio lets meet up for some beer drinkin and butt scratchin. my treat, lol

  • MuglyTheWorm

the perfect non working work space. looks like a place i would want to be in. nice...

the real question all lifehackers want to know: where'd you hide the pegboard and tree trunk beer cooler? :P

  • LaWatusi

@Hollasa: I DO!!! I think I just might do that! lol thx

    LaWatusi

  • John Tan

Seems like too much print, but like the green!

    John Tan

  • ouzelkat

I love this office! I really like the patterns and I love how you used all black and white with a few punches of color. I wanted to know, did you cover your magazine holders or did you find them like that? And where did you get the pencil caddy? Yes, it isn't for everyone but that's why we're doing this, isn't it? I think you have a great eye for design. Office decor should be more than colored fan lights inside a computer and a collection of DVDs on the wall!

  • crazyhomer

Well on behalf of everyone I know welcome to Lifehackers greatest moments.

  • Tan Hwee Kheng

I loved the way the office is organised. Though personally I would go for earth toned colours rather than prints for the fabrics, maybe even blinds instead of curtains.

    Tan Hwee Kheng

  • Dan Vo

This is straight out of some interior design show on HGTV. Fabrics, patterns, pillows, decor. I understand that not everyone wants to work in a sterile, minimalist, stark environment, though. Sometimes your office is also a place you want to be in when you're not working.

  • Jake712

@SamuelFox: My wife's home office doesn't change state significantly over time and it's got "design flair" too. In other words it's always neat while being very frou frou.

Me on the other hand...my office is what I like to call "layered"; the most recent items are in the top-most layer.

  • Julia Braunegg

    LaWatusi,

I'm interested, what's that bag thing on the desk, it loos so neat, where could I get something like it (preferably on the net, since I'm in Europe...)

    Thanks!

If anyone is looking for the wallpaper she's using, I found it:

  • ShipraCoral

I really like your green desktop organizer. Is it portable? I'm looking for that type of organizer to carry around between my desk, couch and bed. where did you find it?

    ShipraCoral

  • LaWatusi

@ouzelkat: The 3-pack magazine files came from Target for $1! I wish I would have bought more because they no longer carry them. Ikea has some inexpensive and pretty ones. The desk tote was purchased at Michaels in the scapbook department. Thanks for the nice comments! :)

    LaWatusi

  • LaWatusi

@ShipraCoral: I bought it at Michael's, and it's actually a mini scrapbooking tote. It's so convenient and has little handles, so I often take it room-to-room to work on projects, pay bills, etc.

    LaWatusi

  • LaWatusi

@Julia Braunegg: I love my little desktop organizer - everything's right at my fingertips. It's made by Scrap, Paper, Scissors and I bought it at a local craft supply store who doesn't sell online. You might try searching for "scrapbooking tote".

  • GarretSnail

@ José Leitão The appropriate link for her desktop is actually here, http://www.rob-sheridan.com/sketchblog/2008/05/step-by-step-cereal-mascots.html. Rob Sheridan is an amazing artist!

Kudos on the tasteful combination of modern and deco elements. Its bold, but it works very well. The only thing I would change is the color of the desk and bookcase so that they mesh with the black coffee table.

  • ShyamariAgdistis

Holy Crap, my office had a couch but all the clients sat there and watched me, too creepy. I wish my office could stay that clean for an hour! Big props!
