The Backflip From The Balcony Desktop

Reader cain novocain’s desktop blends eye candy with a perfectly functional minimalist desktop—a great customisation without a lot of memory-hogging add-ons.

The desktop is a combination of:

  • The built-in Windows address bar is docked to the taskbar as a Launchy replacement.
  • Standalone Stack adds launcher icons without memory usage.
  • Rainmeter with the Moxaweather configuration.
  • Start Killer removes the start button.
  • The quick launch uses the ecqlipse 2 icon set.

The result is a desktop that adds features without a lot of extra memory usage. Great job, cain novocain!

I wish there were some custom desktops for windows 7. I'm interested to see what some more creatively inclined people would make.

Hang on, what's a memory hogging add-on, if Rainmeter isn't? That's borderline, launchy's slim in comparison.

Having said that, it's a really nice minimalist desktop.

@[www.flickr.com] That's my Windows 7 set up. That's a bit of an old screenshot but for the most part it's the same as what I have now.

I know it's windows, but i can't get past that "Time Machine"-esque icon. Is it a reboot button?
    Good job though.

@portezbie: Here it is, just goota flip it vertical... maybe apply some levels on photoshop to adjust it a bit...

I'm pretty sure that's the System Preferences icon upside-down and greatly expanded.

@Phoshi: never mind its stand alone stack....it just wasnt inline with a tray icon so it looked like a desktop icon...

@nitzua: Nice litesteps would be. Unfortunately, this isn't deskmodders.com, and alternate shells often provide more damage than gain for most people. Me? I love emerge.

I always want to get rid of the start button and task bar, but every time I do, I miss it way too much.
It does its job quite well. in fact, not even rocketdock is able to replace it despite how good it looks.

  • takemetoyourtoaster

sorry for the double post, but is there instead of getting rid of it, have a keyboard shortcut for access, or be able to move it/change icon? thanks again

  • takemetoyourtoaster

I have enigma set up, but just realized that I really don't know how to change icons for things, is there just a folder I can put them in, an app, also could I use these icons in windows 7? thanks

  • hxzero

so let me get this straight. windows address bar as a launchy replacement? isnt launchy replacing the windows address bar since it doesn't have many functions in the first place?

someone tell me if im going insane

  • ValentinoMagoostus

not the giant system prefs icon wallpaper?!?! lol

    ValentinoMagoostus

  • hansning

@CharleStephen: pretty sure it is too. i blew up the sys pref icon and found that the mac one has those round reflection thingy on it, so i guess he removed it. or perhaps apple and this has the same source?

  • nightbirdsf

@CharleStephen: Yes. Did you read the web page pointed to by joshrholloway in the comment above yours?

  • Kirk Bond

So the point is to get Windows looking like a stolen icon from the Mac? Its just the System Preferences icon from the Mac upside down...

    Kirk Bond

  • cainnovacaine

@hxzero: Its not entirely a launchy replacement, but it surprised me in what it recognized. I use Launchy to launch websites, folders, and control panel items. So it works great.

  • cainnovacaine

Its just a good clean background, thats all... Settle down.

  • akiwiguy

@Phoshi: You love emerge, i hate it because it wouldnt work. Anyway, love this desktop.

  • cainnovacaine

@gpzbc: Startkiller doesn't replace it, it just hides it. Hit the Windows key

  • gapo

If we patch Vista using the uxtheme installer ... Do I loose updates ??

  • nitzua

    @Phoshi: lol

  • The noob geek

Thats a pretty neat desktop. The 4 icons on the cog are a bit of eyesore though. Would have been perfect if he used icons which represented metal engravings.

  • QuentinDawes

There will be a takedown order from Apple by morning. http://www.macblogz.com/2008/08/07/apple-files-trademark-for-leopard-system.../

  • projectvirus

@Phoshi: I still haven't found a rock solid way to get user created themes on Windows 7. Last time I tried I couldn't even get to the login screen after restarting and had to re-install.

I did a quick google search last night and found mostly the same instructions I used last time to lock up my computer.

  • projectvirus

@Phoshi: He's got one config running Phoshi, give Rainmeter a break :p

  • RuthHapfink

How did you get the custom start taskbar to be flat like that? It looks flat as opposed to glassy and beveled Looks great.

    RuthHapfink

  • HarmonyParthenopeus

anybody know what windows theme that is?

    HarmonyParthenopeus

  • Richard Tran

How do you make the Start menu disable all the options besides the address bar, as well as making it look transparent with that color?

    Richard Tran

  • cainnovacaine

    @gapo: No.

  • cainnovacaine

@HarmonyParthenopeus: Just search deviantart for any clear glass themes. This one is just called "Glass"

  • cainnovacaine

@RuthHapfink: Its just a theme. For XP you need to find a uxtheme.dll patcher and for Vista SP1 try Vistaglazz. www.deviantart.com is a great place to find themes.
