Skype Call Recorder Creates MP3s Of Your Skype Conversations

Windows only: Free application Skype Call Recorder creates MP3s of any Skype conversation with a couple of simple clicks.

Given Skype’s popularity, it’s not surprising that there are plenty of alternatives in this space, but Skype Call Recorder is probably the most simple option we’ve seen. Install the app, run it, and hit record whenever you want to capture a conversation.

The app offers a few simple recording settings (mono or stereo and custom bitrates), but there’s very little else to fiddle with—which is a strength. Skype Call Recorder is a free download, requires .NET 2.0.

Very handy, and free, can't beat that.

  • Oranges w/ Cheese

Gizmo has this built into the program.

Be careful recording "phone" conversations. The law says you have to notify the other party that the call is recorded. I guess between friends and family member it is ok.

I use a D-Link DPH-50U phone adapter with Skype which also has the ability to record calls. The device isn't free of course, about $25, but it's also a nice way to integrate Skype with your regular phone as opposed to having a separate headset.

@moboking: The law varies wildly from state to state, with many states only requiring that one party who is participating in the conversation know the conversation is being recorded and even that is only to prevent unauthorized eavesdropping/wiretapping.

Check out [www.rcfp.org] for all the laws broken down by state.

Why couldn't you use something simple like Freecorder ([applian.com]) that is a browser toolbar which can record you soundcard output and line in mic at the same time?

There's also Audio Hijack (free version as well as pro version) to do this on OSX.

    @moboking:

Also keep in mind when calling customer service, and they play the recorded "This call may be recorded for (blah blah blah" message...

That is also granting you permission: You MAY record this call if you want. Without telling them.

nice, but is it legal to record a telephone conversation? don't you have to alert the other party/parties that the conversation is being recorded (or else you'll be wearing a tutu somewhere where they've turned you into Bubba's girlfriend!)???

  • Samu Wade

I've got a load of audio apps which will do this, but Wiretap Studio, included in the current MacHeist bundle, has perhaps the nicest interface, and is great for organising and processing recordings afterwards.

I also use it for capturing audio from YouTube videos and so on, it being much easier to do this than to save the video and then extract the soundtrack from it. If you're doing this, you might want to ensure that system alert sounds etc. are switched off.

On the legality of recording phone calls, it depends on the state. Here's a handy guide from the Reporters Committe on Freedom of the Press: http://www.rcfp.org/taping/index.html

Isn't it illegal to tape a telephone call without notifying the other party?

This could be a great way to archive voicemail messages. Can't wait to try it out. I've been saving a few for more than a year, re-upping them every 21 days as they're about to expire.

This program starts recording automatically on call connection, as well as "hit record whenever you want to capture a conversation."

Why would you want this for personal use?

  • askj113

@gpzbc: I can think of many situations where you are calling someone, often bureaucracy, and you need proof of what has been said.

  • askj113

@QabilBear: I don't think skype is a telephone call for that purpose, technically.

  • misandry

    @gpzbc:

and also for your protection. i was receiving threats from my previous landlord and this would have been very helpful at the time to document abusive phone conversations

Not sure if it's the same people... but there's a Skype Call Recorder program for Linux that works REALLY well.

@Jerry J. Davis: Yup, that's where this program really shines.

easy. i'm a med student. so when i'm talking to a professor or a doctor, i can record my questions and answers and the professor doesn't get mad stopping for me to write notes. i can just keep asking and the skype records it. then i can use windows or dragon speaking and it translate my voice to text.

I've been using Call Graph, as mentioned by LH in 2008

I wonder how this stacks up against it.

  • ShyamasriFlying fox

The law on recording is different from state to state. Some states allow recording if only one party is aware of the recording, while other states require both parties know.

I've been using Call Graph as mentioned by LH last year. Excellent, quick and easy. http://lifehacker.com/374720/record-skype-calls-as-mp3s-with-call-graph

  • orev

@QabilBear: IANAL, but laws vary from state to state. Many places only require that 1 party is aware of the recording. Anyway, software is a tool, it's up to you to use it legally.

I use Call Graph [www.callgraph.biz] For me it's the better!

@askj113: Ok. I can see that. I was thinking more along the lines of personal use.
