Radical Image Optimization Tool Provides Side By Side Image Comparison

Windows only: Radical Image Optimization Tool makes it easy to see how compression affects the image quality of the pictures you’re optimising with a handy side-by-side interface.

Sample photo by XirannisX back On.

Radical Image Optimization Tool isn’t the best choice if you’re looking to bulk re-sample images, but when it comes to squeezing quality out of every byte, it does let you exercise a high degree of control over the compression of an individual image.

Your images are laid out in a side-by-side format with immediate updates for any alterations you make to the level of compression or other settings. The file size of both the source image and the optimised image are also displayed above the images, so you can see immediately if the quality-to-size ratio is acceptable for your purposes. If your need isn’t so much tight control but bulk converting, check out how to batch resize with Infranview and JPEGCrops, a speedy batch cropper that lets you specify crops on a per picture basis. Radical Image Optimization Tool is freeware, Windows only.

    Old news. Saw it on C|Net a while ago (being yesterday or Thursday).

  • Jamezspot

    @Penguins-R-Us: Your valuable information is greatly appreciated. Thanks bro!

    /sarcasm

  • SJRNWT

    @Penguins-R-Us: So if it's on one site, other sites shouldn't spread the good news about this tool?

    Come on now, do I really have to explain the concept of website diversity?

    Also, if it was already posted on CNET yesterday or on Thursday, is it really that big of a deal? 2 days? Honestly?

    SJRNWT

  • Alicemagic

    @Penguins-R-Us: Oh yeah? Then allow me to introduce fresher news to you. Websters just updated their dictionary. They added "Penguins-R-Us" under the word "Douche Bag" as an example.

  • MuglyTheWorm

    @Penguins-R-Us: now i feel sorry i missed your article on it. i wasted all this time reading this one. whats the name of your website again?

  • MichaelTV

    Paint Shop Pro has this same thing built in -- very handy! I use the compression optimization most every time so the quality-size ratio is best. (Yes, PSP is a pay app... just saying if you don't have that, get this!)

  • Mark 2000

    Photoshop's "Save for Web" should do the same thing. Is this superior in some way?

  • askj113

    @Mark 2000: For those not owning photoshop?

  • goodywitch

    This is also a plugin for IrfanView. If you downloaded the plugin pack, it's automatically included. It's under File > Save for Web.

  • SJRNWT

    @undefined: One more thing I should add...

    Some people don't regularly view CNET. Personally, I only go to CNET when I want to see a review for something I'm considering buying. Aside from that, I stick with Lifehacker and Gizmodo for my daily tech news because they're both reliable, and they cover interesting issues.

    SJRNWT

  • goodywitch

    @Penguins-R-Us: That's where Jason saw it also, hence the VIA link. If you wanted to be bad-ass, you would have said you saw it on freeware genius instead.

    Not that it matters, really, because, as SJRNWT said, not everyone reads CNET, ghacks, freeware genius, the download squad, digital inspiration, and whatever else has lots of free downloads/useful ideas. Nothing wrong with propagating good software.

  • mogleum

    I see 'PNG' in that screenshot... does this do lossy PNG?

  • _Jonny

    0.3.1 is coming in the next few days if anyone is trying to avoid the beta tag.

    @Mark 2000:

    I'd agree with the poster above the difference of $600 vs. $0 is a big advantage.

    Seems pretty obvious.

  • Penguins-R-Us

    @Penguins-R-Us:
    Looking back at this I realize what a (to take from Alicemagic) douche bag I was being. I'm sorry. It won't happen again. (And I probably won't do as many on-the-spot comments without thinking about them first.)

  • earth2marsh

    @goodywitch: + 1 for this. It looks a lot like this app, and for the same great price (free)

  • strungoutonfreeware

    @Mark 2000: Probably not -since cs4 starts up and runs a lot quicker than its predecessors it probably is not as desirable to fill your box with small one job freebies but some times cranking a smaller free app is just quicker.
    I use xnview (shell)and Picasso just because there fast not because there free - for some jobs the almighty ps is just to much trouble.

  • neoliminal

    @_Jonny: What isn't 'beta' about a 'dot oh' release?

  • TheOtherHalf

    @Penguins-R-Us: You just went from typical-cliché-internet-blog-commenter/message-board troll, to a true rarity on the netterweb: the REAL person who learns from mistakes! I appreciate your last post there, PRU. :tup:

    (hehe... pru)

  • TheOtherHalf

    @Mark 2000: If you have one of the Creative Suite editions that come with Fireworks, FW's optimization is much better. I don't mind taking the extra time to export to TIF, then batch my JPGs in FW using the JPG - Better Quality preset.

    I should start using the "smaller file" preset; I like as many artifacts as possible in my JPGs! They're like that jelly stuff that comes off of a turkey after a couple of days in the fridge... YUM!

    TheOtherHalf

  • stickboy

    IMO, side-by-side comparisons are overrated. In-place before/after would let you see changes from artifacts better.

    stickboy

  • McWhammer

    @Penguins-R-Us: Who goes to CNET?! Out of all the places on the internet, you go there? You can't explain your way out of that atrocity.

  • Fain

    @Penguins-R-Us:
    Awesome of you to own up to your mistake like that.
    You're not a douche. You were acting minorly douche like, but the word was throw out premptively I believe. Because frankly it is exceedingly rare for people to own up to mistakes they make on the internet. Let alone own up to them without making an excuse to dismiss their action. Bravo.

    Fain

  • Penguins-R-Us

    @McWhammer:
    How true. I really need to cut down on random nonsense and do something useful like run Ubuntu in Windows.

    @Fain:
    Thanks. I try to be polite, even to people that might be halfway across the world from me, people I most likely will never meet.

    @Comment Thread:
    Once again, sorry.

  • Ashley Wilson

    @goodywitch: +1 from me too. Why bother with this. I've had irfanview with the plugin pack for a long time, but never realized this option was there!

    Ashley Wilson

  • goodywitch

    @goodywitch: Just a clarification: if you have the IrfanView plugin pack, this exact program is included in the download. It took me a minute before I realized that the RIOT plugin = Radical Image Optimization Tool :-P

  • arienh4

    @Penguins-R-Us: Yeah, you're really one of the first people that actually owns up to it. Well done. I think you can consider most of the comments above your second one void.

  • idodialog

    FastStone Image Viewer does this elegantly in the save as dialog - really FastStone does everything talked about with image editing and viewing work. (OK not layers or clonestamp)

  • decays

    It's a shame paint.net doesn't have something like this.

  • FunkyMonkey

    @goodywitch: IfranView gives me the creeps. I don't think the interface has been updated in at least ten years.

  • HughPeriphetes

    Yeah, this isn't really all that great...I guess it's better than nothing - but other programs do the same thing, and better.

    HughPeriphetes

  • blutec

    @undefined: TY goodywitch! I'm enlightened and installed the plug-ins, I really don't know why I didn't bother doing that before... love the RIOT!

    blutec

  • SJRNWT

    @Penguins-R-Us: +1 for taking it in stride! Very rare :D

    This makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside lmao

    SJRNWT

  • pfurrie

    Have been using Paintshop Pro for years, and though have tried all the Windows image software on the list, Paintshop had/has the best features-to-cost ratio, priced at under $100, but doing most of what Photoshop did.

    pfurrie

  • zaxl

    @goodywitch: thanks for the tip, great tool.

    zaxl

  • AnastasiaGerbil

    I've found FSviewer to be very good at resizing without loss of quality, even scaling up (which is harder) and it has side by side comparison (of before and after) feature too.

    AnastasiaGerbil

  • squishyalt

    Picassa should have this too.

    Stable, simple, perfect.

  • Ovi Aiesec Hentea

    @strungoutonfreeware: I'd recommend getting strungoutonGRAMMAR.
    there they're
    to too
    Also, are you referring to Picasa, by any chance? Or did you revive Picasso and are keeping him in your closet to run some photo manipulations every now and then?

    @Penguins-R-Us:
    People who post "Old News" and the like FTW!!!!

  • AngelBlue01

    @goodywitch: I love Irfanview, thank you for pointing this feature out!
