QuotePad Is A Tiny, Portable Note Manager

Windows only: Portable note-taking application QuotePad creates searchable notes from any text on your screen, and even saves the original link if it’s from a web page.

QuotePad works like most other note-taking applications—you simply select some text and use the Shift+Ctrl+Q shortcut key combination to create a new note, which automatically adds a link referencing the source page. You can pin the application to the side of the screen, or easily filter through the notes with the included search feature—there’s even a feature to export the notes as a plain text file, making this an interesting alternative if you want to quickly save bits of information but aren’t in the market for a full-featured solution like Evernote.

QuotePad is a free download for Windows only. For more alternatives, see our five best note-taking solutions.

    I'm personally already seriously in love with Google Notebook...so much so that it has mostly replaced my Google Calendar, which is sort of odd.

    Anyone heard of Opera?

    By portable, do you mean PortableApps style? If so, I'll try it...

    I'd really love to have a decent note-taking app for Android that syncs with a web-based editor.

    I've been using Upvise Personal, but its UI is not very smooth at all. :/

    @cricket25: No, what is it?

    @cricket25: Oh yes, Carmen is my favourite but The barber of Seville is a close second.

  • Springo

    @Drakkim: It isn't really portable apps style, because it doesn't follow their definition of portable, because as i discovered, it has an option for uninstalling it in the "Add and Remove Programs" in Windows, and to do that it needs to change a setting in the registry.

  • Springo

    @Ben Dixon: If they didn't use an installer, it would be portable i think, because it doesn't seem to affect anything other than the list of installed programs.

  • Ben Dixon

    I'm not sure if this actually is portable..... if you look in the help it talks about running setup.exe. Not sure how that can be portable (Not tried it out yet, but will if it actually is portable).

    Tell me if i'm guessing wrong, but we are talking about a free clone of NotesHolder here ([notes.aklabs.com])...

    @re.member: Forgot to say... there is also ShirusuPad. Different set of features, but handy as well.

    @goodywitch: you beat me to it. very very similar to CintaNotes. Besides, couldn't find the no-installer version of QuotePad... you know... being portable.

    OneNote ftw.

    i don't feel ok "installing" these portable apps that need you to make entries into registry and then give you an option to install in portable mode, where in you install in only one location...so is that the installed location or the portable location...the whole confusion is unnecessary. another software like this is zoundry raven and also softoffice....or softmaker office 2006. (you'd find the portable setup app in the install location after you installed on your harddisk. why the extra work?

  • Kevin Chang

    It is exactly the same with NoteHolder. But NoteHolder has less memory usage. (NoteHolder~10M, QuotePad~22M)

    Windows only, and you call this portable? Is this a joke? What's portable in this ... by portable I understand that I can take it wherever I am, and I will be able to open it from everywhere - windows, mac, linux, windows mobile. That's NOT portable

    Krasimir Kazakov

  • garbanzo-bean

    well i like it. all these whiners - yikes!

    it's like a mini OneNote. i could see it being useful.

    it's pretty easy to get the portable version out of the setup file. just unpack it with Universal Extractor. i checked it out with NirSoft's RegFromApp and didn't see any registry activity once the app was extracted. it appears to write all settings to an INI file. more testing is needed to confirm true portability, but i'm at work and have no time right now...

    @Krasimir Kazakov: 'portable' and 'cross-platform' are very different things...

    garbanzo-bean

  • Springo

    @Krasimir Kazakov: Portable when used here is supposed to mean a piece of software that doesn't change any files or settings on the machine that it is running on, except files in its own folder, hence, allowing you to use it safely on any computer with the OS supported.

    Cross-Platform would be when you can use the same software on multiple operating systems, but not all of these are portable.

    So in this case, QuotePad is supposed to be portable, because it isn't meant to change anything on the host pc, but it only runs on a windows PC, because it is not Cross Platform.

    Started using it to pull snippets from some blogs. Main problem is no rich text. Never mind pictures. For note-taking you really want one tool that's up to the job i.e. one place to look.

  • littlecousinjimmy

    You don't need to bother with UniExtract to get a portable instance. Just run the setup, and it will let you pick the location and whether you want it to be portable.

    littlecousinjimmy

  • LLane

    @littlecousinjimmy:

    I agree about the rich text issue. I'd love to have a computer-based alternative to Google Notebook that doesn't have to have the many features of the Evernote desktop. I don't even need pictures; just formatted text would be enough for me. But I haven't found any such program.

    I love to try google note is there a third party app? so you can sync with?

    I was trying evernote as well which is good, i think it is too much for though.

    Let's try this one.

  • seysen

    @Kevin Chang:

    That's very true! But this freeware contains more features than the lite version of Notesholder...In fact, it's almost like the Pro version minus the categories.

  • mogleum

    @cricket25: Yeah, this seems just like the notes feature in Opera, which I make use of daily.

    mogleum

  • Drakkim

    I bit the bullet and installed this with a RegShot running :-)

    It DOES appear to be portable except for the uninstall registry stuff.

    Keynote is still one that I use. Hasn't had an update in a few years but I doubt it needs one. Holds text (rich or plain), pics, does tree and tab style nodes. Nothing quite like it.

    paintbox

  • paintbox

    @Krasimir Kazakov: Frankly if it's just for Win, it's portable enough. I don't give a rat's butt about anything else.
