Move Half-Finished uTorrent Downloads To Another Drive

If you’ve ever run your drive out of space while a long-running download is still going, the Online Tech Tips weblog writes up a simple solution to change your download location to another drive.

The solution is easy enough—just stop the torrent, change the download location to another external drive, and then move the half-finished files to the new downloads folder. Once you choose to restart the download again, uTorrent will detect the half-finished files and pick up where it left off. It’s a simple solution, but might come in handy. Hit the link for the full walk-through.

    Just did this last night after installing a new RAID5 volume.

    The.Colbert.Report??? Lifehacker wouldn't be advocating stealing copyrighted material would they?

    Now if you will excuse me, I have to get back to torrenting my 44.4GB of completely legal unsaid things.

  • bobbyrognlien

    Transmission has this built in! I have found Transmission to be a much better client than uTorrent, as it has all the features (and more!) in a more compact and attractive interface.But it is only for OSX. Transmission FTW!

  • cayton

    I had this happen to me once. Good to know.

    @bobbyrognlien: Unfortunately, it also carries more bloat. uTorrent doesn't bring much in the way of features but its about as light as it can possibly get and that's about all I need from a torrent client.

  • zero456

    @bobbyrognlien: It's also available for Linux, actually.

    Better solution ... resist the urge to be cheap and spend <$100 on storage space to support your media hoarding habit.

    Problem solved.

    or just dedicate an external drive to your torrents. course i archive and it takes longer to burn a disc from an external drive. i always wondered why

    Transmission for Linux does NOT have this feature last time I checked (which was a couple weeks ago).

    Maybe a new daily build has added it, but Transmission for Linux does not have feature parity with Tranmission for Mac OS X. It's still my preferred BT client on Linux, but it has a way to go to catch up with the Mac version.

    Deluge also supports right click --> move torrent
    Plus it's an incredible client. (on Linux at least, it's a bit weaker on Windows)

    @savedsoul: oooor get a dedicated server for media storage. Then it's available everywhere!!!

  • bobbyrognlien

    @zero456: True dat. I forgot! But still, no Windo$ support. Thats where my mind automatically went. Sorry Linux folks!!!!!

  • Micho

    @bobbyrognlien:
    Transmission would be perfect only if it had built in RSS capabilities. Alternatively I tried Vuze but I can tell the difference in my Macs performance due to its footprint.

  • PHermas

    @Micho: Check out automatic for RSS with transmission. I was using Miro for all my tvrss feeds until I found automatic, works great.

  • snze

    @Bo Shonka: It does have the RSS downloader, which is about the only extra function I need!

  • LethAL

    @adjohnson916: Nothing on the site suggests that the material is not copyrighted, therefore it is technically illegal. Although they probably don't care.

    I wish that uTorrent had a built in file manager that allowed you to move your files around and keep them linked with their torrent... and while I'm wishing, I also wish that the search box at the top offered the functionality that iTunes search box has - real-time search of the files in the pane below.

    So you're saying that if my drive is full then I should download files to a different drive that isn't full?

    WOW, THANKS FOR THE GREAT TIP LIFEHACKER!

  • ericesque

    @Brad N.:
    and Brad, I'm not targeting you. It's just been on my mind and I chose your post to let it fly.

    Please don't take offense.

    @Brad N.:
    I've been hearing people name drop RAID5 an awful lot lately. Storage is getting dirt cheap, so why not?

    I just hope people realize that RAID-- no matter how it's configured-- is never backup.

  • tjmarkham3

    @adjohnson916: Yea I was joking, I'm sure nobody actually cares. It's just that when you see these screenshots of torrents, normally the name is blurred out.

    You get those vids ad-free? Which extension is that?

  • FirstWorldMan: excited over new

    Doesn't downloading directly affect the speed of the download. I mean in the sense that it takes longer for the file to completely finish because it isn't being constantly moved to an external drive? I'm currently using USB2.0, so that's my culprit. I suppose if I were using FireWire 400 or 800 I wouldn't be complaining.

  • $_philly;

    @ericesque: Not backup, but damned useful if you're doing an awful lot of file management and don't want deteriorating drives.

    Being fair, though, backing up to SSD > using RAID on HDDs.

  • Rolcol

    Only the Mac client of Transmission has the ability to move a running torrent. It still has to be moved to libtransmission so every interface can use it. Qt, GTK, Web... none of those have it.

  • novajeeper

    @phrend:

    I'm currently trying this out cause I have the same problem.

    [filesharingtalk.com]

    I'll let you know how it goes, but so far they seem to be having good results.

    @phrend:

    Checking this out as we speak.

    I'll let you know if it works or not. Everyone else seems to be having luck with it.

  • Pho3nix1991

    @ericesque: Depends on your definition of backup. If you do mirrored drives it technically is a backup if the other drives were to fail.

    Pho3nix1991

  • Evan Plaice

    @snze: The 'u' in uTorrent is actually supposed to be 'µ' which means micro. It doesn't have every feature under the sun, and that's exactly why I can have it running full out in the background while playing games or doing work.

    "More features" make marketing sound better, but really great software does everything it should great and nothing more.

    Just MHO...

    i use deluge in linux and utorrent in windows and they share the same download location. this allows me to continue the download while the wife is using the netbook for non bandwidth intensive tasks in Windows. both client can continue downloading if a recheck is done to see which segments are already completed otherwise utorrent will continue from its last known state.

    unless the client stores the downloaded data in a metadata repository, moving the target files to another location shouldn't be an issue.

    ciao!
