Google Image Search Completely Integrates Colour Into Searches

A couple of weeks back we showed you a URL hack for searching Google Image Search by colour. Now the handy little feature has been integrated directly into Google Image Search, no hack necessary.

There’s not all that much to it. Just perform a search, then find the colour drop-down to filter the results by colour. It’d be nice to see the colour palette expand beyond the 12 defaults currently listed, but as-is it’s still a nice little feature.

I wish they add a "reverse image search", so I can know where I got some of my images.

Really great for searching images to find a wallpaper with a certain primary color.
    Like so: [images.google.com]

    Omg, this is SO awesome!!!!

WOW!! This makes searching so much easier. I use colors in my search a lot - especially when searching for wallpaper like darknecross has demonstrated.

Funny, it works in portable Chromium but not in Iron... but still is an awesome image search feature!

  • Tightlines

    That is one fat dog.

    I don't see it.

@Junkan: Are you saying it's browser dependent? I'm using Safari 4.

  • sam-i-am

@resilient: I've used tinyeye before, but I still wish Google did this.

  • DeborahJemagee

@resilient: google might do a better job, but until they release their version, I'm using http://tineye.com/ for my reverse image search needs. It can be quite useful, though there are of course a lot of images that it can't find.

    @resilient: Have you heard of tineye.com ?

@sam-i-am: I couldn't see it in either Opera OR IE...and that's with a google account and without...

  • chimericdream

I'm not seeing it in FF, but I do see it in IE8. Strange...

Wow...just amazing Google. You added a button that adds the color to the search query....pure genius. This way instead of just typing orange, there's a new and drawn-out way to add it to your query.

  • Matt

@Tightlines: I did the same search just to find it again.

  • Ike_Skelton

Holy cow, that is one fat dog! And this is a pretty sweet option too!

    Ike_Skelton

  • Ike_Skelton

@FlashCreations: That's what I thought too. Does this actually search differently than just typing orange dog???

    Ike_Skelton

  • Ike_Skelton

@Ike_Skelton: I guess I should say it would be a sweet option if it worked. It doesn't show up in Firefox or IE6.

  • slingshotmike

@FlashCreations: Whatever, it doesn't just add the color "orange" to your search query because you selected "orange". It finds images that are based on that color. I bet you invent way cooler things.

    Wow, that's a fat bulldog.

  • kikolani

That's an interesting feature... certainly should help web designers when they are looking for images to fit in with their overall theme colors.

  • Phoshi

@FlashCreations: nono, it's massively more advanced than what you think it is.

  • goodywitch

Does google actually process the pictures for color, or do they rely on content from [images.google.com] ? <--btw, oddly addicting

  • GardenaMoirae

I googled a blue duck because I never saw a blue duck before

    GardenaMoirae

  • SienaOwl

FYI the dog is wearing a "fat suit" or the picture has been photoshoped. I searched on Google and followed the links (surprise, surprise from an SEO guy) to find that he got the picture from a SFX firm.

google rocks! makes it much easier to find cool wallpapers the color you want em

  • JeremyGordon

you can do a sort of hacked multi-color search (with pretty successful results) by including a color in the search text, and selecting a different color from the drop down.

...there may be a better way to do this.

  • chiggr

@Jagerkatze: It only shows up after you do your initial search.

  • James Carr-Nelson

if you thought that was cool, check this out. it's the same idea but with more color options and it uses flickr instead.

woaaaahhh!!! google is the real skynet!
dudes, you guys are making it easier for the machines to track down Sarah Connor!!!
now i really need to get myself a pre-packed disaster evacuation bag... in light of impending judgement day!

  • SwainAhala

This greasemonkey script here http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/45544 allows you to filter images using two colors.

  • Vengance

@SienaOwl: So, this might not be most productive thing to focus on, but all I could think of was "what in the world did he type in to get the picture of that dog in the fat suit!" Turned out it was just "fat dog". Who'da thunk?
