File2.ws Shares Files With Ease

File sharing web application File2.ws accepts almost any type of file—and creates a web-friendly page to share with your friends.

File2.ws handles most popular file types: pictures, documents, music, zip files, and even fonts or videos—and converts them into a web-friendly page with a link to download the original file that can be shared easily over IM. Uploading an mp3 will show an embedded music player with a link to download the original file, making it an interesting choice for quickly sharing a music file.

The service has a 15MB file upload limit, but no limit on viewing or downloading the files. Readers should keep in mind that free file sharing services like this shouldn’t be used for transferring sensitive files or used as file storage.

File2.ws is a completely free to use, ad-supported site. For more ways to share files with friends, check out the five best file sharing services submitted by readers like you.

Nice. Maybe in the future the service will do the same for opening PDFs and other docs for quick review like it does for mp3s. I'm used to utilizing SendSpace, but this looks like something worth checking out.

Just took a look at it, and I'm pretty impressed. It does a pretty good job of showing Office documents and Pictures. No support for ODT though. This is definitely a good site for sharing files with other people.

What I'd love to see is a hostable version for your own website.

  • mnerd

@YourTechSupport: That would be great. I would love to install something like this on a subdomain on my own url, for sharing files on my server. Maybe someone has already done something like this.

@YourTechSupport: I'll third that idea. A few months ago, I looked for something that would let me set up filesharing + user uploading on my own server, and I didn't find a turnkey option. I think I was finally pointed toward a Drupal install with some specific modules, but I had to back-burner it.

    Additional note...

If I encrypt an archive (zip or rar) with a password, it won't display the contents of the file. It'll just present a download option.

    A few notes...

@DaiWalka, I was able to upload and view PDFs.

I don't see any way to delete my files later, and this term of service bugs me:

"You grant File2.ws a free royalty free licence to publicly distribute, host, share and modify the content."

  • Aanidaani

Good idea, but I have word docs that are bigger than 15 megs. 5 years too late.

  • insekt

i would use this if it didn't have a 15mb upload limit.

Even Cloud Disk is great! - [clouddisk.co.cc]

First attempt to upload a mp3, lost connection after about 12 minutes and resulted in an error. The second time was successful ([file2.ws]) however the speed was again about 10 mins. It's not really a fast solution. I much prefer 4shared.com *shrug*

I have an innate distrust for .ws domain names.
I've got nothing against Samoans, just their TLD...

    "...five best file sharing services..."

Whoa! Time for an update to that old link...

DropBox, just in beta back then, must surely be in the top 5 now. And Skydrive offers 25GB of space now! That's pretty wow!

  • takeiteasy

drop.io is pretty good. 100MB limit and can share multiple files with one url and allows files to be added by others.

Hi everyone, Thanks very much for the blog post, it has made a huge spike in traffic, I am currently overwhelmed by the amount of connections, if file2.ws is unreachable try again in 5 hours - it's currently a problem I am working on. Thanks once again everyone! :)

It wouldn't load the other day, but today I uploaded a joke our local news claimed was a medical report. It was a 7MB mp4 & File2.ws put it in a flash player & offers a download of the original. It worked pretty well for free no sing up site. [file2.ws]

eh, 15mb is just too little.
