Behind The Khaki Curtain
Hidden workspaces are quite pragmatic when it comes to quickly tidying up. A mess that can’t be seen is no mess at all, right?
Taking a note from the same playbook as previously featured workspace Mac in a Box, Lifehacker reader The End of The World tucked his workspace away in a closet. More spacious than the Mac in a Box closet there is room for a lengthy desk and two large shelves for additional storage.
Ergonomics are a high priority, the keyboard is set up for the DVORAK system and the wrist rest itself is an ergonomic mouse. Behind the external monitor is a laptop with a hackingtosh build on it, a manoeuvre dear to our hearts. The rest of the space is wide open for impromptu projects, with his phone and MP3 player kept out of the way on custom cradles. For more pictures and note about the workspace, check out the link below.

Dvorak is a proper name, not an acronym.
Kevin Johnson
That is a workspace to be hidden...
Gabriel Kauffmann Schüler
*waits for someone to make a big deal about there being no proof Dvorak is any more ergonomic than qwerty*
protospork
@Kevin Johnson: But then again, I don't usually see QWERTY written as Qwerty.
@evangelistc01: QWERTY isn't a formal name, really. You could consider it an acronym (From a grammatical standpoint), as it's just a string of letters.
protospork
I never understood why anyone would want to use Dvorak....I type just fine in QWERTY.
Zkdog
@evangelistc01: of course you don't see QWERTY written as Qwerty. It's really just a string of letters, not unlike an acronym. Dvorak is actually a person's name and has nothing to do with either an acronym or key configuration.

I'm really tired of these featured workplaces...not to be the picky type, but it seems like there's more interesting things to write about.
JacquelineAsina
I noticed that your external monitor is just an lcd screen without the case. What is the story with that?
FalinHÂbÂ
That's a neat way there. Some day I will have to establish some proper space instead of throwing everything around.
masiakowski
@protospork: I won't make a big deal because, frankly, I don't particularly care, but as I understand it, the only extensive study showing that Dvorak is more efficient than QWERTY was conducted by Dvorak himself, so take that as you will.

@JacquelineAsina:
There's a brand new Lifehacker without Featured Workspace posts
@Nabeel:
Scratch that, just follow this link => [lifehacker.com]
It'll filter out all Featured Workspace posts.
@Zkdog: It's really more of a kind of nerd merit badge achievement than a useful skill.
protospork
@kylenalepa: The only problem I have with qwerty is that uio are all next to each other, so I tend to hit the wrong vowel constantly. Dvorak actually makes it worse by putting ALL the vowels in a row.
protospork
@Zkdog: Likely for similar reasons that I used Linux even though Windows was "just fine." Genuine curiosity sometimes provokes people into all manner of things, and if re-mapping your muscle memory in a quest for a more efficient keyboard layout is among them, what the hell. Go for it.

I've always wanted to shove my 'office' into a closet. I'm one of those people that don't what tech overpowering the room (but I love my tech). So the conflict is..should I drink beer tonight, or work on this project?
Thanks for the inspiration! Oh, and get a pair of Grados! :)
nolabar10der
My typos are clearly planted in order to mask my genius...bwahahahaha
nolabar10der
Now u just need a projection screen that pulls in front of that and a projector to watch movies on so u can go from work to play(or relaxing)...
spetz
wait, how is that dual monitor deal set up? can you move the mouse to the top of the external screen and have it show up on the bottom of the laptop's? if so that's insanely badass and you've gotta clue me in on how to do it.
Chris Johnson
That's a nice idea, hide the desk & computer from guests. That would be the best place to stash all of those things that you don't want seen. :)
this is where the wizard of oz be working his controls
The roller thingy it awesome. I know that trackball, and it doesn't have a scroll wheel. That makes up for it nicely. I prefer my (inherited, literally) TrackMan Wheel.
My workstation will never have the opportunity to be covered, since I use it a good 12 hours a day, sometimes more.
Natnie
@protospork:
For me, QWERTY is better because I know where the damn keys are.
May I ask where you got your city-scape wallpaper?
@Alexander Saites: guess LH doesn't do img tags:

@protospork: Gee, and I thought Dvorak was that cranky old cuss who writes a column for PCMag
@Chris Johnson: UltraMon my friend.
Graham Simmons
@Chris Johnson: It's built right in to Windows. Don't you just drag the monitors around in the preferences window?
Although, that's a mac keyboard, so I assume you're talking mac? I personally don't use dual screens with my mac, so I have no idea...
Atamagaii
horrible
rockhopper
@nolabar10der: Seems to me you'd be better off tuning your muscle memory to be really good at NBA Live or Halo or something... I've never heard of anyone winning a dvorak typing competition (although, come to think of it, such a thing must exist, right?)
My space is similar to this, at first glance it's spotless but the start opening drawers or closets and the truth comes out :)

@rockhopper:
So glad to see such fine comments. Thank you.
awesome idea, but where in the world did this person place his/her clothing???? in the living room, where a the office desk SHOULD be???
Wow this is so awesome that I got featured on Lifehacker!

@The Limority Report:
This is in my bedroom actually and I have an oldstyle pull out drawer under my bed, much like some beds have pull out mattresses.
Dillon Chi
@Chris Johnson:
Actually because the computer is running a hackintosh build I have the Leopard operating system. All I had to do was go to display preferences and then arrange. Drag the Square representation of my laptop over the Connected LCD screen.
Dillon Chi
@Kirk Douglas:
I cant actually remember :O but I don't claim any rights or anything on it.
Dillon Chi
@FalinHÂbÂ:
Well I wanted to go for minimal.
I salvaged the LCD screen from a electronics recycling program. The outside screen was badly damaged and the hinge on it was broken. I took it out of the case for aesthetic and for space reasons. (The case added an extra 2 inches on each side and 3 on the bottom.) It is also the screen I bring to LAN parties so I got rid of the excess weight.
Dillon Chi
@nolabar10der:
I love my tech too thats why I devoted my closet to it. Work on the project and get a movie when your finished with your workspace, kickback and drink the beer.
