Fix

Add A Separator To Safari’s Bookmark Bar

Reader James missed the ability to add a bookmark toolbar separator, a la Firefox’s “New Separator,” to the Safari browser. So he made his own using a wee bit of JavaScript trickery.

It’s a 10-second bookmark hack: Create a new bookmark, or add any site to the bookmark bar, then right-click on it and hit “Edit Address.” In the highlighted address field, change the address to javascript:void(0);, taking note to add the semicolon at the end. Now click to the left and edit the name to the | character, or whatever you’d like to separate your bookmarks. It’s a bookmark that doesn’t do anything when clicked on, but provides a nice visual cue for those who like to keep their folders separate from individual sites, or other organizational tweaks. Simple, easy, and functional. Know another bookmark bar JavaScript trick you’d rather not live without? Tell us in the comments. Thanks James!

I've done this in chrome but made it much more complicated. I pointed the bookmark at a HTML page local on my machine, set the favicon to a nice separator image that matches chrome's theme, and then removed text outside the favicon. It works well, but I'd rather have the option to add real separators.

Very cool. Thanks James. I have actually used the "|" sign as a separator in Safari for a long time, but kept clicking on it and it would bring me to the blank page (what I had it set as). This will help a ton, thanks.

Is it possible to automatically add a seperator between new bookmarks in Firefox toolbar?

@ericesque: Yeah, but FF on the Mac blows. Don't know why. I *love* it on my PCs and have been an avid supporter vs. IE, I file bugs in bugzilla, write my own search plugins, GM scripts, etc.

But it blow on the Mac. Maybe it works better on Intel-based Macs? For me, Safari is the only way to go on the Mac.

I solved the separator issue with Safari Stand. It has a real separator you can use.

why bother? import your bookmarks from firefox and you have it there. better yet, let xmarks/foxmarks for safari do that for you and you don't need any tutorials!

@hypert: I just started using Mac OS last week (on an Intel Mac) and other than not being able to right-click and open a bookmark in a new tab, I haven't noticed a difference between FF on Mac and Windows.

    Much Obliged, James.

@ericesque: It's not a feature of the browser, it's a old, yet still clever, hack.
