Abstract Aurora And Colour Spectrum Wallpapers

If you’re looking for an abstract splash of colour to spruce up your desktop, the collections here should have something that catches your eye.

Over at the design blog Hongkiat, they have assembled two collections of really colorful wallpaper. One is a collection of 30 wallpapers based on the colour spectrum and another 26 wallpapers based the previous topic and aurora-style abstractions. Almost all of them are available in full and wide screen resolutions, but there isn’t much emphasis on multi-monitor resolutions. Many of them could easily be tiled across multiple monitors without looking odd, so it’s worth a peek even for the multi-monitor crowd. If you’d like to keep things fresh with your new wallpapers, check out previously reviewed 100dof Wallpaper Rotator. 30 Impressive colour Spectrum and Rainbow Wallpapers

The website I use a lot of abstract/colorful wallpapers is Caedes.net abstract section.

@xvkarbear: Jeez that was bad english. I apologize! I meant to say "The website that I use alot that has abstract/colorful wallpapers is Caedes.net - in their abstract section."

This is awesome. I was looking for something like this.

I'm gonna download all of them and put them into my 100dof wallpaper rotator's folder

    @xvkarbear: thanks for the link! i understood it. just say creative articulation. =}

  • sychian

I had already found these somehow. I didn't realize it until I started ticking through them. Of course, then I found the one that was already being used on my desktop. That made it yet more obvious. :-P

Both sites have been sufficiently LH'd

  • just_laze

All the decent ones are not available in wide screen resolution, including the one above.

  • tok3ninja

@just_laze: I just fire up Photoshop and make it widescreen as long as the 4:3 version has a resolution close to the 1440X900 my screen supports. You'd think sites would be making more widescreen formatted wallpapers. We'll just have to beat the CRT out of some people.

All of these are a little too gay-pride for my tastes.

  • McWhammer

I like this one (From the second site): [tefferen.deviantart.com]. They all look straight out of the Mac default walls, but that's ok.

  • Dr.Mario

Now with Google's new image filters for extra-large images, I prefer to use that for all my wallpapers. Currently, my topic of interest is "fractal"

  • johnhorneguitar

Some of the second collection look right out of a 70's album cover. Just add the mothership with you band's logo on it.

  • Ahmed Mohieldin

I still use Lightning at Sunset. I don't know why, it just really appeals to me as a desktop. Enigma isn't too bad either. It really useful too, especially when I don't feel like using GReader (which I rarely go onto anymore, even though I should).

As long as the aspect ratio (er, am I using that term right? Proportions?) is all right, you should have no problem resizing a lot of these for older computers. I still run at 1024x768, and I tend to download a lot of 1600x1200 wallpapers, then size them down in Photoshop.

I've mentioned in comments before that I prefer designy wallpapers from sites like MiniTokyo and AnimePaper (you may have to wade through an awful lot of not-very-designy stuff, but, for example, there are gems in the Yusuke Nakamura section of each site). That said, if I were going to use abstract swirly stuff, the backgrounds presented in this post would be my first choice. Thanks! :)

@xvkarbear: Nice site. Kinda wished they offered up a consistent set of resolutions though.

@beala: Well, that was a pointless comment, wasn't it? Don't like 'em? Don't download 'em.

    Very nice collection!

    Gay? Blah!

  • QabilKepla

Thank you for showing my fractal 'Rainbow Ocean' on your front page, I hope people use it and enjoy it. Even though I didn't know it was here until someone mentioned it to me, it is nice to see it in such a wonderful collection. To see more of my colourful work, you are invited to visit my gallery at.. www.thelma1.deviantart.com Hugs, Thelma.

@tok3ninja: I do a lot of tweaking with wallpapers I like. To work with my mismatched monitor bank, I use wallpaper at 3200x864. Usually I end up either making my own or taking an even higher resolution photo and cropping it.

Lately I've been using low-key photography and a lot of black space.

  • Jason Fitzpatrick

@QabilKepla: It's a great pic! Thanks for stopping in, I'll update the post with a link to your gallery. =)

  • playdoh

don't be such a 'phobe and they don't own the rainbow ya know

  • McWhammer

@The Gnomeâ„¢ Inc.: Says the guy with a rainbow in his avatar?!?

Hello, hello, is there anybody IN there?

  • Iron59

Is shedding money to decor computer wallpaper, really life hacking? Thelma1's work featured in LH is not free (or may be Thelma1 started charging after featuring here?) I'll look forward to tag this post as 'commercial"

  • SherwinHermione

@Jason Fitzpatrick: Thank you very much Jason, I'm pleased you like it, and many thanks for the link too. I will be updating my journal on DeviantArt in a moment, and I will add a link to here. Best regards, Thelma.

  • Victor Zarza

Rather useless post, not a single picture is bigger than 1024x768.
I'm on 1920, and most people are on 1680, didn't you think about that when posting this images? That's all they are, images, not wallpapers.

    Victor Zarza

  • BoreioSelas

@Iron59: There's seems to be a misunderstanding. Thelma's work is free to download for personal viewing. Just click 'full view' at the left of the image and save it.

You were probably misled by the 'buy this print' button. This refers to a service that Deviantart provides, where people can buy ~photo prints~ of particular images (or postcards/mouse pads etc with the image on them).

@[kampongboy92.deviantart.com] is 2560*1600. There are others.

I got a virus attack when I tried to download an image from this web site. Does lifehacker actually check the links it puts out anymore?

@witeowl: Wow. Apparently we're still in the 3rd grade where we're only allowed to speak if we have something nice to say.

    1) Yes my comment was a critique, but it was meant to be a lighthearted one. Take it easy.
    2) I was under the impression that a forum was to discuss one's opinion on a certain topic, even if that opinion is a negative one. If you can't take the heat, stay out of the kitchen.

    beala

  • witeowl

@beala: Just because we're not in third grade does't mean that we shouldn't aim for constructive contributions. Food for thought (while we're in the kitchen and all).

    witeowl

  • beala

@witeowl: Huh? What wasn't constructive about my comment? It's pretty clear your response was just a knee-jerk reaction to my criticism. My point was, I like the concept, but I would prefer a different color scheme. Nonconstructive criticism would be: "This is stupid and you suck. Give up graphic design." The distinction is, in my constructive criticism I specified why I didn't like it, whereas nonconstructive criticism wouldn't.

Anyway, maybe I should have phrased it better, but mainly I was going to laughs. I guess you didn't find it funny.

  • mikekearn

Some of these are okay, but overall I'm kind of disappointed. As some pointed out, a lot of the really cool ones aren't in widescreen or large sizes. Also, some of the really cool fractal ones are just too bright for my tastes. Sure, I could fire up an editing program and tweak it, but it's just not worth it sometimes.

  • YakovWallaby

kaspersky detected a trojan horse when I attempted a download of the wallpaper...

@QabilKepla: Thanks, I will be looking at your gallery for a long time. Lovely stuff.

  • CarrieC

For those complaining about not high enough resoultion, no multi-monitor, wrong colors, etc. These are free, take them or leave them but your complaints are a bit of "looking the gift horse in the mouth."
You don't have to like every post on LH.

  • witeowl

@beala: Ah, if that's the case, then I encourage you to revisit the links and dig deeper. I found quite a few that were a bit more subdued, and some nice ones are even sticking with the deeper hues.

If I'm going to be completely honest, my response may have been a bit knee-jerk-ish at the "gay pride" thing. Maybe I misinterpreted; if so, I apologize.

@CarrieC: Thank you very much, I am so pleased that you like my work. Hugs, Thelma.
