50 Swanky Icon Sets For Macs
While these eye-catching icon sets are distinctly Mac-centric, many of them are filled with stunning pieces that could be easily co-opted for another operating system.
Over at AppStorm, a blog focused on Mac applications, they’ve compiled 50 great Mac icon sets. The eye candy factor is off the chart, and non-Mac readers will be tempted to snag some of the pickings. LiteIcons is a great freeware solution for installing and managing your Mac’s icons, but if you want to use them in Windows or Linux, you’ll need to do a little tweaking. Check out web based iConvert to covert a wide variety of icon formats and IcoFX if you’re working in Windows.

I love beautiful icon sets for all platforms, but for some reason I always end up returning to the default. Wonder why...

@nighttimestereo:
Maybe your just used to them? :D
Candybar is good, as well.
@nighttimestereo:
because it all unified and all of the defualt icons fit well togeather and all use one style
so far my fav icons are the oxygen icon set for kde 4

@nighttimestereo: For me it's a problem with unity. When icons are visible, they all have to be of the same theme or it looks ugly, even if each indiviual icon looks good.
Install one program with a crappy icon and bam, your unity is gone. After a while it just becomes more of a hassle to maintain... the default look caters to all because well.. its default and we're used to it.
Just my 2 cents.
Some of these are gorgeous, and I get how to convert them for windows if necessary, but what's everyone's favorite way to apply them to the whole operating system (for windows, I mean)?
I love the icon set features that lh is doing now, though.
For you Windows users, check out the collections here: [mintywhite.com]

Many of these are indeed awesome, but not unusually - for they're staple fare, not bizarre, eclectic designs. Most come from IconFactory and InterfaceLIFT. More external icons are always welcome.
Re: working with these in sets on Mac, check out CandyBar: [www.panic.com]
I'm having trouble getting LiteIcon to work on my mac...getting an error about mailto icon78 or something like that. Is anyone else having this issue? What are my other options for using these icons?

@nighttimestereo: For the same reason that I do, I'm willing to bet. I open every single bloody link that comes up and proclaims "PRETTY ICONS CLICKCLICKCLICK" but I never do anything with them. It may just be the curmudgeon in me but the icons on the machine have become almost irrelevant to me. I say almost because one of the first things I did after getting my Mac was to put pretty custom icons on *every* appendage (USB, firewire) drive that I could. I think that is a habit that I will continue forever, but for everything else I'm perfectly content with the default.
Hey guys, Askj113 said the following: "...and I get how to convert them for windows..." Well, I was wondering how you do that :P IcoFX works with icns files but the packs from the Swanky sets aren't in icns format soo I'm kinda lost here .. Any help would be appreciated :D

@KendallHessel: Well, I don't know how to do that, but I can suggest googling "Mac to Windows icon convertor", there's bound to be something to get you started, even if it's not the best solution.
Also, why not just reply directly to Askj113's post?

@nighttimestereo: Chances are, it's because many people making extra programs (for any platform) tend to work with the default icon set in mind, if only because many have never switched. So, in many cases, an app's icon, or even it's whole look, just won't sit well with custom icon sets.
Of course, that might well be wrong, but I'm just adding my thoughts to the melting pot.

anyone know where to download liteicon? The link leads to a dead page.

My dumb obvious question: how do I install new icon sets on my Mac? These look beautiful, but I haven't seen a "ho to" on this. Thanks for any suggestions.

@Carrespondent: Try getting Liteicon freeware. It works pretty well for me.
