Google Spreadsheets Adds Mobile Editing

8:00AM Adam Pash | A year ago, Google enabled read-only access to your Google Spreadsheets from your mobile browser. Now the Google Docs team has added editing capabilities to Google Spreadsheets from popular phones, including the iPhone and Android phone. The excitement you feel at this announcement probably depends on how big of a spreadsheet junkie you are. For example I love the idea of tracking expenses from my phone using one of the many personal finance templates available at the Google Docs template gallery—but I was born at least a quarter spreadsheet junkie. If you’ve got your own killer use for a little spreadsheet editing on your mobile device, let’s hear it in the comments. Sync Your To-Do List To Your iPhone Calendar With Google Sync

7:01AM Adam Pash | To-do syncing has always been one of the gaping holes on the productivity side of the iPhone and iPod touch. Several third-party apps have filled this hole, but with Google Sync, to-do syncing gets even better. The Knowliz weblog details how to set up popular to-do list manager Toodledo (and it’s calendar feed feature) to work in conjunction with Google Calendar—and by extension, Google Sync—so that your to-do list syncs seamlessly between your calendar, to-do list, and iPhone. Remember the Milk also offers a calendar feed, so the same basic flow should apply for RTM if it’s your to-do app of choice. DoubleDesktop Is A Tiny Virtual Desktop Manager

6:00AM Lifehacker US Edition | Windows only: Virtual desktop utility DoubleDesktop does exactly what its name implies—it creates two virtual desktops in a tiny package that uses less than 1 MB of RAM. Using the lightweight utility is very simple—just click the system tray icon to switch back and forth between the two virtual desktops, or optionally set a hotkey in the preferences to flip between the two virtual desktops. Moving windows between desktops is the only annoying part—you have to drag them halfway and catch them on the other side. Readers looking for a full-featured virtual desktop solution would be better served with a solution like previously mentioned VirtuaWin — but this tiny utility might be just the ticket for low-memory systems. DoubleDesktop is a free download, Windows only. DoubleDesktop [via Help Desk Geek] More »

VideoCacheView Finds Flash Videos In Your Browser Cache

4:00AM Lifehacker US Edition | Browser cache locating utility VideoCacheView searches through your browser cache for already-watched videos—so you can copy them to your videos folder. Using the utility is simple—just launch the application and wait while it searches through the cache for each of your browsers (even Chrome!), and then either play the file or save it for later. Using the play function requires a media player that can play Flash files, or you can convert the file to a more compatible format using any number of tools. VideoCacheView is a free download from NirSoft, works on Windows only. While there are any number of ways to download a YouTube video (like Lifehacker’s own Better YouTube extension), this utility could come in handy for saving videos from other sites. First Screenshot Of Chrome On OS X

1:00AM Adam Pash | Google has promised a Mac (and Linux) version of Chrome since it was first released for Windows, but Mac users dying to get a little Chrome should be happy to see that real progress has been made. This screenshot comes courtesy of the Chromium Dev Google Group, where you can also find a more detailed report of Chrome’s status on OS X. The upshot: It’s still not a working build, but the developers have made serious progress. Now we can call it Chrome! [Chromium Dev Google Group via Google Operating System] More »

Mozilla Bespin Is A Killer Web-Based Text Editor

12:30AM Adam Pash | The folks behind Firefox have unveiled a new project today called Bespin, an extensible, web-based text editor that lives in the cloud. At first blush, Bespin may not seem all that special—after all, web-based word processors are a dime a dozen these days. But Bespin isn’t just another word processor. Primarily, Bespin is a text editor—the kind you’d use for editing code or managing text-based todos. Using Bespin, developers could collaborate on projects through a unified interface (that still supports plugins!) no matter where they are—so long as they’ve got a browser. That’s not to say that Bespin won’t also make for a killer word processor someday, too. Like I said, it’s built to be extensible much like Firefox is, so a user could conceivably install a plugin that would turn Bespin into a straight-up word processing app, too. The point, though, is that Bespin is full of potential. There are tons of really cool things happening with Bespin, so be sure to watch the video for a detailed look or sign up at the Bespin homepage and try out the demo. Developers and plain text lovers, let’s hear if you think Bespin could someday replace your favourite text editors in the comments. Bespin: Code in the Cloud [via Mozilla Labs] More »
