As Gizmodo points out, the ribbon-style WordPad in Windows 2007 opens Word 2007 files, the .docx kind, pretty handily, albeit with some formatting loss. Nice to know a full-fledged Office purchase isn’t a necessity.
That might be fine for those who have converted all their old Office .doc files to Office 2007 .docx – BUT Window 7′s Wordpad will NOT open .doc files (but it will open .rtf & .odt).
Another one of Microsoft’s odd ways of thinking.
Remember “Work” which could open any spreadsheet – but not from it’s big brother Office Excel :-)
