I’ve just used the 1.0 RC and it grabbed my 20gb library in under two minutes. Synced the whole lot to my iPod in under an hour (wasn’t paying attention). Obviously there are some problems with compatibility and stability (mine hung while trying to play tracks locally and sync), but I think you’re being a little harsh without fully testing it.
As far as RCs go, I wouldn’t exactly call it a 1.0 either, but I like that they’re following a ‘release early, release often’ method.

I tried importing my collection using version 0.7 and it recognized none of my meta-data! I like songbird, but all the versions so far (I've been trying since 2.5) have have been too slow and buggy for serious use.
But I'll give this release candidate a go.
