Yes, powered speakers are required. You could buy a cheap amplifier, or a used amp on eBay. I have a setup similar to the author's except I have an Apple TV in the Living-room. On the back Patio, I use an AR outdoor wireless speaker. To get sound to it, I have a splitter on the audio out of my Mac. One side goes to the speakers hooked to the computer, the other goes to the AR wireless transmitter. I use AirFoil to send the sound to all my devices, and with the iPod Touch and Remote, it's really slick. Now, I'm looking for an app that will stream audio and video to the Touch.

Are you required to have powered speakers for this? I have passive outdoor speakers and I want to use the AirPort Express to connect them without having to run speaker wire through the attic to the receiver in the house.
Is it possible to connect passive speakers directly?
