Prepare Cheap and Healthy Food With Minimal Resources

9:00AM Lifehacker US Edition | You already know that a healthy home cooked meal is better than prepackaged and fast food, but when it comes to the double crunch of money and time how do you find room for healthy cooking? Frugal blogger Trent assembled some tips from his own days as a college student and bachelor on how to prepare healthy food cheaply with minimal cooking gear. Trent writes: I’m assuming that all you have are just a tiny fridge, a hot plate that can generate enough heat to cook on, a single pan, a plate, a bowl, eating utensils, a source of water, and a knife to cut with. Nothing else – you could have this equipment in the corner of a dorm room. More »

Tweak Firefox to Display Richer Colours

8:01AM Gina Trapani | If the digital photo you just uploaded looks washed out on Flickr compared to in your desktop image editor, that’s because Firefox 3’s advanced colour profile support isn’t turned on. To enable it, type about:config in Firefox 3’s address bar, then click the “I’ll be careful, I promise!” button. Then, in the Filter field, type gfx.color_management.enabled and set that value to true (its default value is false). Restart Firefox. From there on in, your photo colours will be richer than they were. Why isn’t this value true by default? Well, according to Mozilla, you’ll see a 10-15% performance hit using this setting, but if you’ve got a reasonably fast machine, it’ll be worth the better-looking photos. Hit the link below for an extended explanation of Firefox’s colour profile support. Firefox 3: Colour profile support (oh the pretty, pretty colors) [dria.org via Joi Ito via Xeni Jardin] More »

Oprah Winfrey’s Stanford Commencement Address

6:00AM Gina Trapani | Last weekend Oprah Winfrey addressed Stanford graduates at their commencement, offering her take on how to make the big decision of what to do with your life. This is only worth watching if you’re a suckers for this kind of “follow your dreams” stuff (and an Oprah fan), like we are. If Steve Jobs is more up your alley, while you’re in commencement address watching mode, check out his great 2005 speech (text transcript here). The Oprah clip’s about 30 minutes long, so download it to your iPod to watch at the gym (here’s one way to do that), or load it up on your media centre so you can get comfortable on the couch. Zoomii Browses Amazon Books Shelf by Shelf

5:00AM Kevin Purdy | One thing that’s always been missing from the book-buying experience at mega-retailer Amazon is finding great books just by chance, or by clever cover design. Zoomii, a free book-finding interface for Amazon, stacks bestsellers on virtual shelves, organized by bestsellers, category, or whatever else you’re filtering for, and viewed like Google Maps—zoom, click for details, and pan around with a hand cursor. It’s similar in many ways to previously posted social book browser Shelfari, but it skips your friends’ tastes and goes right for the mass appeal. One (possibly temporary) drawback: the site runs a bit slower on Firefox 3 than other browsers, but the creator says he’s working on it. Zoomii is free to use.
