Google Docs Adds PDF Uploads
11:20PM Kevin Purdy | You can’t edit them yet, but Google Docs users can now upload PDF documents and view, copy text from, print, and share them. Nice solution when you don’t have a reader handy, or when PDFs are part of a larger project—but note that competitor Zoho already offers PDF viewing for even non-registered users. [via] More »

Disable All Balloon Notifications in Vista
11:03PM Kevin Purdy | If you’re a Windows Vista user tired of seeing lower-right-corner reminders about security, system updates, or other occasionally annoying speech balloon announcements, the How-To Geek has got a cure-all fix. It shouldn’t be undertaken by anybody who isn’t sure if they can live without system or application system tray pop-ups, but if you’re set on having a distraction-free desktop, you can head to this registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced and change the EnableBalloonTips value to 0. If you’d rather not spend the time searching that out, the Geek has a double-click registry fix for download at the link below. For even more Vista hints, check out our Windows Vista hub. CleanAfterMe Removes Your Tracks on Other Computers
10:30PM Kevin Purdy | Windows only: Using a friend’s system or a public computer and want to keep your activity private? CleanAfterMe, a free utility from the makers of similarly-useful utilities like WirelessKeyView, has you covered. The single-file application, which easily runs from a USB drive, provides an all-in-one interface for wiping out all the records of your work or play, including registry files, “Recent Documents” lists in the Start menu and elsewhere, clipboard memory, and much more. The only obvious issue with CleanAfterMe is that it only does full wipes, so your buddy might be irked when all his convenience links are missing—not a problem for public terminals, of course. CleanAfterMe is a free download for Windows systems only. CleanAfterMe [via gHacks] More »

Feedky Monitors Multiple Video Sites for Search Terms
10:00PM Kevin Purdy | Free video-monitoring site Feedky lets you keep an eye on all the major video-sharing sites for any keyword you’re interested in popping up. Simply enter your search terms and you’ll get either an RSS feed, or a simple web page, that updates when those words appear in the tags on YouTube, MetaCafe, Daily Motion, Flickr, Blip.tv, and other streaming video sites. The site’s free to use without registration, but signing up gives you a bit more freedom to edit and organise the tags you’re watching. Feedky [via MakeUseOf.com] More »

3:24PM Angus Kidman | If your desk is threatening to collapse under a pile of junk, here’s a useful incentive to tidy (or at least reorder it): the Coolest Tower contest. Submit a picture of your tower of anything — office files, USB drives, co-workers, leftover lunch scraps — and a continuous voting process ranks the coolest. It’s no real surprise that the current leader is constructed entirely from $50 notes; money clearly talks (there’s a $100 prize for the winner, apparently). But there’s not too many competitors in right now, so why not go for it?

1:40PM Angus Kidman | Debate is currently raging over reports that new drinking guidelines for Australia will define binge drinking as more than four mid-sized alcoholic drinks a day for men. The official healthy upper limit for both men and women is two standard drinks a day, which seems reasonable, but the leap to “binge status” with just two more drinks a day, though unconfirmed, has inspired plenty of criticism. It seems clear that someone consuming more than four drinks day in, day out probably has a problem, but does having four beers on a Friday night make you a binge drinker? What do you think would be reasonable? Let us know in the comments.

1:28PM Angus Kidman | If your media hunger makes the thought of burning to a 50GB Blu-ray disc tempting, but you’ve been put off by the price, here’s some good news: Sony just cut the RRP for its BWU200S internal burner from $899 to $599. Of course, the discs themselves are still a touch on the pricey side, but it’s a welcome drop nonetheless, especially if you’re regularly over-filling your hard drive with video and audio. Got any good sources for cheap Blu-ray media, or would you rather just stick to conventional DVDs and ever-expanding USB sticks? Let us know in the comments.

12:37PM Angus Kidman | Like Nick at Gizmodo Australia, we’ve seen a few postings this weekend indicating that 3 is telling customers it too will be offering an iPhone in Australia. How quickly that comes to pass remains to be seen, but we’re hoping it doesn’t happen in a big hurry. As we’ve already noted, early adopters are going to get burnt price-wise. If 3 holds off, we might actually see better-value deals — although, like the existing data plans, these aren’t likely to be good for people outside the core 3 ‘broadband zones’.

12:22PM Angus Kidman | Here’s a cool option you probably didn’t know was buried in Vista: the ability to read an online archive of replica historical documents direct from the OS in their original format. The documents are part of an online archive which is accessible to anyone with the Silverlight plug-in, but Vista users can access them natively. This is one of dozens of tips featured in our special Lifehacker Vista hub, worth checking out if you’re using the OS.
