Convert a Spreadsheet to an HTML Table
11:00PM Gina Trapani | When you want to turn that giant spreadsheet into an HTML table without wrangling too many TD’s and TR’s by hand, you can use a formula to generate the HTML tags for you. The Design Intellection blog describes how to use the =CONCATENATE("text", cell, "text") spreadsheet formula to turn a row of data into an HTML table row. On Friday, Kevin pointed out a web-based HTML table generator that’s a simple, fast solution for small tables; but if your data’s already in a spreadsheet and the word “concatenate” doesn’t make you want to run screaming, this may be a better way to go. Wanokoto Webapp Turns Photos Old-Timey
4:00AM Kevin Purdy | The Red Ferret Journal points out a slick, Japanese upload-and-convert tool for giving photos that browned-out, decades-old look. Select a photo or paste in a URL (both words are written in English, as luck would have it), and hit the bottom blue button. The photo results aren’t returned at full resolution, but, depending on lighting, quality, and, of course, modernity of subject, you can get pretty authentic-looking results without any image editor filters or plug-ins. The site is free to use, and (it appears) doesn’t restrict upload file sizes. Wanokoto [via Red Ferret Journal] More »
Shutdown Windows With a Text Message, Thunderbird Edition
2:30AM Adam Pash | We’ve already shown you how to shutdown Windows via SMS with Outlook and how to do the same on a Mac using Mail.app, but a user on the Hak5 forums demonstrates how to setup a similar SMS shutdown using the venerable Thunderbird email client. The method requires the Mailbox Alert extension and a little configuration, but once you’re done you can save some power with a quick text message next time you forget to shutdown your computer. The tutorial is Windows-specific, but I’m guessing you could mesh the Mail.app method with this one and accomplish the same thing for OS X. Remote Shutdown Via SMS [Hak5] More »
