Get a Simple Visual Effects Menu in Hardy Heron

If you’re already rocking the Hardy Heron/8.04 beta of the upcoming Ubuntu Linux release, or you plan to upgrade next month, the Tombuntu blog points out a small change in how to access customised window and desktop effects from the “Preferences->Appearance” menu. To get a simple options interface, you simply install the “Simple Compiz Config Settings Manager” (sudo apt-get install simple-ccsm from the command line). Those who like their hundreds of visual preferences laid out for them can still install the compizconfig-settings-manager to get an “Advanced Desktop Effects Settings” menu installed. Mount USB Drives in Assigned Folders to Keep Them Straight

Tired of having to look up which drive letter Windows assigned to his multiple USB thumb drives, one author at gHacks decided to assign each drive to its own folder nested inside a “USB” folder. Not only does it add some consistency to swapped storage, it also allows for a persistent shortcut on a Windows desktop. The short how-to: Run “diskmgmt.msc” from Windows’ Run/Start Search box, right-click on your plugged-in drive and choose “Change Drive Letter and Paths.” Then:

Click on the Add button, select Mount into the following empty NTFS folder and click on browse. Now navigate to the subfolder that you want to assign the USB drive to and confirm the assignment. The USB drive will from now on be accessible from that folder as well if it is connected to the computer.

Sync iCal-Based Calendars Together with FuseCal

FuseCal is a web app that does something so useful, yet so seemingly rare, that it’s hard to believe it’s both free and easy to use. The app, currently in alpha, lets you add iCal-based calendars (and a few other formats) to a master calendar, then choose whether all those events, just the ones you pick, or events filtered by keyword will be synced to Outlook, Apple iCal, Google Calendar, or another program. I’ve only had time to test the Google Calendar->FuseCal->Outlook setup, and it seems to work. Those with web sites can also publish their combined FuseCals on their site. FuseCal is free to use; a sign-up lets you keep your calendars in sync.
