Stay Healthy At Your Desk Job

When you sit at your desk all day long at work, it’s hard to stay healthy. The Diethack blog covers a few ways to be good to your body while you sit at your desk at work, like reducing repetitive movements: Movements that you repeat over and over (such as answering the phone or reaching for a book) can lead to strains and stress. Reduce unnecessary movements as much as possible by keeping items you use often within arm’s reach and using tools, such as a phone headset, to reduce repetitive movements. You should also alternate the hand you use to operate your computer’s mouse.

If your mouse hand is starting to feel a bit stiff, check out our previously posted feature on how to teach yourself to mouse “goofy.” How to Stay Healthy While Sitting at Your Desk All Day [Diethack]

Back up Gmail on Linux with Getmail

Keep a copy of your Gmail messages stored locally on your Linux machine with freeware application getmail. Googler Matt Cutts explains the process: after you install getmail, enable POP email on your Gmail account, and configure getmail to store your messages as mbox or Maildir, then run getmail. Because of a Gmail limitation, getmail will only download 99 messages at a time, so keep re-running getmail and you’ll soon have a copy of your entire Gmail archive on your Linux box. Over a year ago, Gina described how to back up Gmail this same way using fetchmail on Windows. Do you back up your web-based mail on your desktop? Tell us in the comments. Your Best Stain Removal Tricks?

If you’ve ever had an “oops!” moment and realised you soiled your new clothes or a precious piece of furniture, you no longer have to scour the internet for a remedy while the stain soaks in. The School of Fibre Science and Technology in Australia has a beginner’s list of what home remedies can remove even the nastiest stains. If you have a paint stain, for example, apply turpentine to the area. For tar, the best remedy is a grease solvent. And if you perspire a lot (and don’t want it to show), sponge the area of your shirt with a weak vinegar solution and then wash it according to the fabric instructions. Boost Your Memory with the Palace Technique

The “memory palace” is a well-known technique for remembering long sequences of items with minimal effort, and the Litemind blog explains how it works. In short, you choose your “palace”—that is, a place that you can remember vividly—and associate items with distinctive features of that location. For example, if you’re remembering items on your grocery list and your home is your palace, put one item at the front door in your mind. Walk through the hallway and associate another item with the painting on the wall. Continue associating items with different parts of your palace as you walk through it. When it’s time to recall the items, take the same route as the association phase. Develop Perfect Memory with the Memory Palace Technique [Litemind]

How to Do What You Love on the Job

Do you head off to the office in the morning full of anticipation or dread? The Dumb Little Man weblog tackles the sticky matter of how to do what you love at work. If your overall feeling at the office is icky instead of happy, it may be time to examine your career choices. Take time to reflect on your wants, your desires, your talents, and your unique abilities. Think about the types of jobs that would make you feel fulfilled and satisfied. Once you have determined what you would like to be doing, visualize it. Become whatever it is you wish to be. For example, you may be an office administrator, but long to become an interior designer. Do not say to yourself, “I want to be.” Rather, tell yourself, “I am.”

Have you ever gotten yourself out of a crappy job and into one you love? How did you do it? Tell us your story in the comments. Dealing with a Career You Simply Hate [Dumb Little Man]
