WhoCrashed Helps You Analyse Windows Dump Files
11:30PM Jason Fitzpatrick | Windows only: WhoCrashed is a handy tool for performing crash dump analysis to isolate hardware, software, and driver problems. When Windows crashes it generates a fairly complex log file of what went wrong. WhoCrashed is a front end based on the Windows Debugging Package, designed to make reading those crash dumps a little easier. After loading a dump file, WhoCrashed gives you a break down of what happened and when, helping you isolate the crash in relation to variables like installing new video drivers, possible corruption of existing drivers and so forth. If you’ve wanted or needed to read over a Windows mini-dump file before but found the process frustrating check out WhoCrashed to get at the necessary data faster. WhoCrashed is freeware, Windows only. WhoCrashed [via gHacks] More »

4:30PM Angus Kidman | Windows only: Previously mentioned synching software Office Outlook Connector has shaken off its beta boots with a new release. Microsoft claims the new version offers greater stability and better synchronisation of mail and contacts, and now synchs exclusively with the Windows Live Calendar free service rather than the paid MSN Calendaring offering. I’m currently in the middle of an Outlook migration so haven’t installed 12.1. If you’ve given it a try, share your take in the comments. If you’ve been testing version 12.0, be sure to follow the slightly fiddly instructions provided by Microsoft to ensure your accounts stay synchronised. Office Outlook Connector is a free download for Windows only, requires Outlook 2003 or 2007.

3:06PM Angus Kidman | Google Operating System runs down how to get rid of the intrusive and slow to load chat box that sometimes appears on Google’s customised iGoogle pages (I can’t say it’s showed up on mine). It’s a slightly fiddly fix (involving editing XML files), but worth it if you don’t want screen clutter or have to work with a slow connection.

1:30PM Angus Kidman | We had a terrific response to our competition offering $500 off your credit card bill thanks to the awesome team at Mozo. Entries ranged from the perhaps-obvious (”I responded first”) to the somewhat strange (squid obsessions?) and quite a bit of poetry, and plenty of them made me laugh. Ultimately, though, there can be only one winner, and I’ve judged the best entry to be the one that most represents Lifehacker’s spirit of community, albeit in a slightly twisted way:
I think the winner should be someone who contributes to Lifehacker’s other posts, rather than commenting for financial gain. Ahem!
Ahem indeed. Congratulation edawnedsram for winning, and thanks again to everyone who entered and to Mozo for coughing up the cash. More »

12:00PM Angus Kidman | If your kids are always scrambling for the remote but haven’t learnt to enter three-digit numbers yet, then the Foxtel Mini Mote might be a useful stress reliever. The pint-sized — and let’s be honest, bright orange — remote includes buttons to access eight channels (Animal Planet, Boomerang, Cartoon Network, CBeebies, Disney Channel, Playhouse Disney, Nickelodeon and Nick Jnr). There’s also two buttons you can program for channels of your choice, which makes up for the omission of ABC Kids from that list. The Mini Mote is $29.95, and is only currently being sold through Foxtel kiosks (hit the link for locations). With luck, it’ll eventually be available online as well.
