Make Windows Look Like a Mac with FlyakiteOSX

11:00AM Adam Pash | Windows only: Didn’t get the Mac you asked for this Christmas but still desperate to feel like you’re running OS X, even if it is on a Windows computer (assuming you’re not running a Hackintosh, that is)? Freeware application FlyakiteOSX transforms the look of Windows so even though you’re still running Windows, it looks convincingly like OS X. Everything from your Control Panel to your login screen gets the OS X polish, so if you’re one of the many who tries prefers the feel of OS X on your Windows box, the freeware, Windows-only FlyakiteOSX may be for you. Vista users, you’re not currently supported. FlyakiteOSX [via the How-To Geek] More »

Find the Best Buy at Amazon with SavvyGraph

10:00AM Adam Pash | Web site SavvyGraph displays the average rating and number of reviews for each on a simple graph to give you a quick method for comparing items on Amazon. The idea is that the higher the rating and number of ratings a product has, the better it’s likely to be. So products garnering a place on the top right of the graph (high rating, high number of reviews) are the best buys. You can hover over push-pins to see which products are which, and the color of the pins indicate whether or not free Super Saver Shipping is available for that product through Amazon. Secure Firefox with NoScript

9:00AM Adam Pash | Firefox only (Windows/Mac/Linux): Firefox extension NoScript prevents unauthorized web sites from running JavaScript, Java, Flash, or other plug-ins to keep your browsing sessions safe. The main purpose of NoScript is to protect yourself from browser or web vulnerabilities along the lines of this Gmail exploit by blocking untrusted scripts from executing in your browser. Granted, it may seem like a bit of a pain to enable all your trusted sites (though NoScript makes it simple to add sites to your whitelist in two clicks), but in the end an extension like NoScript turns Firefox into a very safe little browser. NoScript is free, works wherever Firefox does. NoScript [Firefox Add-Ons] More »

Convert URLs for easy mobile phone access

9:00AM Sarah Stokely | DigitURL is a web service that allows mobile phone users to access internet sites using numeric addresses, rather than traditional URLs. It was launched last month by Melbourner Andrew Gray. Andrew told me he created DigitURL because wanted to make URLs easier to access from mobile phones. “Numeric addresses can be much easier to enter on phone keypads, particularly if the URL is long and complicated (as they so often are these days).”You can find some more information at DigitlURL’s blog: “A unique aspect of DigitURL is the Java client software for mobile phones. This forms the interface between the phone and the web, accepting numeric DigitURL address input. In case a user has not installed this application, a ‘web-based’ version is readily accessible at DigitURL.com.” The site is in beta, and it’s simple to use. I entered the URL http://www.lifehacker.com.au via the web form and it emailed me the resulting numeric DigitlURL in the following formats:  76639246294 or http://digiturl.com/76639246294 or the protocol address: digiturl://76639246294. Once you’ve entered these into your phone, obviously you can bookmark them for future use too. Thanks for the tip, Andrew! More »

“Quote” the Web with Screenshots from Kwout

8:00AM Adam Pash | Take screenshots of any web page and embed the image on any web site (like you see above) or upload it to your Flickr or Tumblr accounts with webapp kwout. Using kwout is simple: Just drag one of their bookmarklets to your bookmark toolbar and click it any time you want to take a capture of a web page. Then just use kwout to select the area you want to “quote” and it’ll give you the appropriate code for embedding or upload it to your account of choice. Hit the jump to take a look at what an actual kwout embed looks like. More »

Find a Picture Based on How It Looks with ImageSorter

7:00AM Adam Pash | Windows/Mac: Freeware application ImageSorter organizes images by colour, date taken, name, or size. According to ImageSorter’s developer, the main purpose of the application is to help you find pictures you’ve taken when you remember how the picture looks (by color) but have no idea where it is on your computer. The application is pretty simple to get the hang of, and it does offer an interesting way to browse and sort images, and while it’s not going to replace image management apps like Picasa or iPhoto, it’s a great tool for finding that lost photo under the right circumstances. For a better look at how it works, check out the video demo from the developer (in German). ImageSorter [via gHacks] More »

Wrap Your Holiday Lights Tangle-Free

6:00AM Adam Pash | The holidays are nearing an end, but this year instead of balling your holiday lights up into a unwrappable knot, give yourself a break for next year and put those lights away tangle-free. Reader Chad Bailey says that our previously posted figure-eight method for wrapping headphones works like a charm for storing your holiday lights, but since wrapping lights is a bit different from wrapping headphones, the instructions are a bit modified. Basically, it works like this: More »

Gmail users might want to check your filters …

5:59AM Adam Pash | Gmail users might want to check your filters to ensure your account hasn’t been hacked like this designer’s. Google has fixed the vulnerability, but if you were exposed before the fix the filter could still exist in your Gmail account. More »

Take Your Best Driver’s Licence Photo Ever

4:00AM Lifehacker US Edition | After a recent two-hour sit at the DMV, I watched most people leaving bitter and complaining about the photo on their new driver’s licence. This reaction to a bad photo isn’t surprising, considering you have to live with it for years. These days, you’ve got to show your driver’s license just about every time you use a credit card or fill a prescription. People have commented I always take a good driver’s licence photo. There’s a trick to it and today I will detail the steps I take to get a good pic. More »
