Find Similar Web Sites with Youlicit

11:30PM September 17, 2007 | Lifehacker US Edition

Search engine Youlicit calculates the popularity of search results based on user votes rather than web site links. Call it a social bookmark tool if you will: search by URL or key phrase, and related sites ranked by Youlicit users appear. To get in on the voting yourself, install a Firefox extension for recommending sites (registration required) almost like StumbleUpon. Even though it’s still in beta, Youlicit did well in initial tests, listing Hackszine.com, 43Folders.com and lifehack.org as Lifehacker’s related sites.

How to replace Windows completely with Ubuntu

APC magazine offers up a 10 part guide to replacing Windows with Ubuntu, written by former Atomic editor Ashton Mills.

The thing I liked about this guide was that even though it covers ground which may be familiar to you already, he’s also thrown some ‘scores’ of how well Ubuntu performs, making this part guide, part review. He also gives an overview of where Linux is at in delivering user-friendly applications for the functions users would expect (eg gaming, web browsing, playing DVDs, image editing and printing, and so forth). The section on gaming gave a nice overview of where Linux is at. Nice one, Ash. :)

Deal with online copyright infringement

Search engine optimisation site SEOmoz has a useful video tutorial on the steps you can take to combat online copyright infringement. As presenter Scott says, it’s not uncommon to find your website content has been lifted by other sites – and it can be really annoying if someone’s getting hits on their site which should really be going to you. The video walks you through the steps you can try to get the offending website to remove your content, starting with a friendly ‘please remove’ email. It also has links to some examples of a formal Cease & Desist letter and a DMCA Violation Removal Request (which can be sent to Google requesting removal of the offending links from the index). Note – the author of this tutorial is American, and not a lawyer, so read it as helpful but not legally definitive. :)

Yahoo hack day spawns new features

Wired’s Compiler blog tells us that Yahoo has launched two new features – Shop by Color and MapMixer – which came to life from an internal staff ‘hack day’.

The new features were written up in a Yahoo blogpost here.

Shop by Color adds a colour picker to Yahoo Shopping so users can filter search results according to colour. Given the fact that since Google Maps the online community has gone map crazy, the second feature may be of more interest…

Yahoo’s blog says MapMixer “allows other maps to be layered over a Yahoo! Map to show additional detail of a location. Now you can mix together the detail of a point-of-interest map — such as airports, college campuses, sports arenas, historic maps — with the web functionality offered by Yahoo! Maps.”

Tasty, easy and healthy breakfasts

Spring has sprung – which for many people means it’s time to get back into the exercise and healthy eating routine. Blog Zen Habits has a useful post offering 10 tips for healthy breakfasts. I’m happy to be able to offer my own healthy breakfast tip too. I love oatmeal but the instant oatmeals you buy at the supermarket are packed full of sugar. Try this home made one instead:

Put 1/3 cup of rolled oats into a bowl along with 1/3 cup of skim milk and 1/3 cup of water. Microwave for 1 minute 30 seconds to 2 minutes. Stir, microwave for another 1 minute 30 seconds. Stir in 1tsp of cinnamon, 1 tsp of Psyllium husks (if your diet is low in fibre), 1 tsp of brown sugar and around 25g of sultanas. Enjoy! :)
